How To Accept Payment

So I have a client that wants to pay me. I had planned to accept payment through Paypal but my client want to pay me over the phone with a credit card and PayPal have denied me for a virtual terminal. Terfore I can not accept their payment

Does anyone have any good suggestion as to how I can accept a payment soon before the client loses faith in me??

I personally have a bad credit score due to incidences in the past and I know a lot of merchant accounts will judge me on this. Does anyone have any ideas of where I can get started on trying to get this sorted out??

Have the owner fedex you a check, until you get the check don't do any work that causes an expense for you.

This is a good time to have them get clear (and you) about what they are wanting you to accomplish etc...

Don't lose the client ...take the CC info with the full name on the card, billing address used on the card and the three digit security code on the back...work on figuring out how to charge to a new account. Frankly client won't worry you haven't charged his card for a few days anyway.

    Hi,

Clearly Mark's comment about getting a check should work. I would position it that you work with local businesses and frankly, this is the first time a business owner has wanted to put it on a credit card. (sounds like that's the case, right?)

Personally, 99.9% of my clients have paid me via check. There are options though, I think, if I understood you right.

Sounds like his/her preference was to just give you the card over the phone, and you're unable to pop it into paypal as a virtual terminal. Could you send him/her a paypal invoice so that way they can link their credit card up to THEIR paypal account and pay via that cc?

Otherwise, it looks like a check would be most suitable.

    Best regards,
    Will

        I would say bank checks...

Or you could set up a merchant account with your bank - such that you can accept credit cards in person.

If they are adamant about paying by check, tell them that they can pay by credit card, but they will have to pay online with a paypal link. Just let them know that it protects them as you won't even have any of their credit card information. That usually is enough to get the business owner to go with it.

Take check, but, if this is going to be a recurring payment, use Check Composer. Check Composer allows you to collect a signature, and, print out the checks directly from your computer and go deposit them.

So to date I have signed up for a different merchant account. I am just waiting to see if I get approved.

If that fails I will ask him to send a check. I have sent him an invoice via Paypal but he seems resistant to that and not willing.

Does anyone have any experience with applying for merchant accounts when you have bad credit?

You can opt for a check but he clearly wants to use credit to pay so a check may not be an option for him.

What it is the reason for avoiding paypal? I find all sorts of sites far outside the IM niche offer paypal now so that reluctance doesn't make sense unless he doesn't understand what paypal is and how it works.

..take the CC info with the full name on the card, billing address used on the card and the three digit security code on the back...work on figuring out how to charge to a new account.
Serious problems with that suggestion. It would be fraudulent in my opinion for you to take credit card details when you know you have no way to process a card.

If his country is paypal approved he can pay with credit card through paypal without having a paypal account - so he should have no problem with that. When a customer hires you or buys from you - he should expect to use the methods you approve for payment.

I would be concerned about the customer. Paying through paypal with a credit card is easy but not easy to reverse by the buyer unless it's a physical product. Don't get so focused on "getting the money" that you ignore warning signs of a potential problem with the customer.

How in the world is this fraudulent?...the customer has an agreement with the OP and both agree to the sum requested. The fraud would be if the OP used the card for illegal activity which she is not doing. Finding a new CC service provider is just being smart based on her circumstances.

        Hi Kay,
So do you think that this person is only interested in paying with a credit card because he can easily reverse the payment? Basically what I am selling him is the right to place his company information onto one of my sites. If he does not pay he does not get his name on the site. He wants to pay for 1 year up front with the credit card and then he also wants a Google local business listing. I feel like I am not at such a high risk because it is still my website.

How long after a payment is made can a person reverse the payment?

If you have all his credit card information would it be possible to sent yourself via email a payment link from your own paypal. Then just enter those information yourself - the whole idea is help him enter the payment to pay through your paypal.

Not sure whether this is a good idea.

Under no circumstances should you use his credit card details to process the payment through your own PayPal account via sending yourself an email payment link or otherwise.

That would be credit card fraud.

If discovered you would lose more than the payment.

The idea that you would take the credit details from someone as if their payment was processed - and then use those details later on another payment page or in any way....is simply not acceptable.

I think more than one suggestion in this thread could be considered credit card fraud. If people can't see that, I doubt it can be explained.

The question being asked is "how can I get this money" when the question should be "why is buyer reluctant to use a safe payment method"?

Paypal does not guarantee refunds on non-physical items - and is very quick to flag/freeze questionable payments. Chargebacks are not as easy to do as many people think - depends on the credit lender policies.

No they likely want the airmiles.

I was in credit card security for 3 years. It is safer for them just to pay you on paypal using their credit card than to give it to someone over the phone.

Also, if they want to rip you off they can just as easily write a bad cheque. It is a red flag but consider it carefully with your other dealings with them before making it a deal breaker.

Let me know if you have trouble because of your credit. I have a miracle worker in the industry that I have referred several students to. He is amazing, and knows how the underwriting for merchant accounts works. Most of the time he can get you approved in an afternoon.

I would emphasise the fact that paying via PayPal is secure and swift and for security purposes you do not process customer card details yourself.

You should not take card details from someone if you neither have the insurance nor the Data Protection coverage in place. You will just sound dodgy when you have to fess up later that you can't process card payments manually.

So be honest. "These are my methods of payment and this is how you can pay."

The risk of credit card payment reversal is a risk you have to accept when accepting credit card payments. If you worry about it too much you'll never dare to sell anything.

You are the one in control here anyway! He pays, you place his details on your site etc. fantastic, oh but then later he reverses the payment - you remove his details. End of story.

To ensure you receive some money you could ask for part payment by cheque (deposit) and the rest by credit card. Then if he should reverse you still have the cheque funds.

Hi i found the solution you can choose one of these options:

    1-AUTHORIZE.NET

They offer several methods of linking web sites to the payment gateway. Authorize.Net offers great customer service. They also offer shopping carts for your products. The monthly fee is quite competitive.

    2-CHARGE.COM

Apply with no setup or application fees for your merchant account. You also will not need to pay for the software they use to accept your payments online.

    3-2CO (2CHECKOUT.COM)

There is a one-time fee of $49.00 for setup. They take 5.5% plus $0.45 from the total on each order. It fully integrates with your website. They allow the customer to pay by check or credit card.

First check with the bank your business account is with and see what they offer.

Another option where you can process the transaction yourself is Propay.com and 1shoppingcar.com. And you know, they can pay by credit card without a Paypal account through Paypal. But sometimes people (people meaning brick and mortar business owners) get funny about Paypal.

Regarding Authorize.net, I use them for my online payment gateway, but you still need a merchant account. Unless they've started offering packages including that as well.

The merchant account is what actually allows to you accept credit cards and transfers the money to your account. A payment gateway is the service that allows you to transfer that payment information from your web site to your merchant account.

Do you have a website that you can throw a paypal button on so that he can just go to the page himself and pay? You can make a page just for this transaction, put the paypal button on for the exact amount he owes you, and then take it down once he has paid.

Find the nearest CostCo store and sign up for their "Business Account" ($100/year) It comes WITH a "Merchant Account"....unless they've changed in the last few mos.

However....as others have mentioned....something doesn't "smell" right. I offer customers the option of paying with their CC but....they'd rather pay with a "Business Check".

One of the ways to receive that payment is have that check sent to you through fedex. Paypal is one of the easiest method but in your case, inform your client to send the payment through check. Paypal sometimes give some problems to their clients as charging some chargeback and etc.

No they likely want the airmiles.
This is the likeliest explanation offered so far in this thread. In addition, the client may get a rebate from the credit card company for amounts put on the card. We have Capital One, which gives us 1% back. When I paid the local mechanic shop $1000 by check for a repair, thinking I'd save them their credit card fee because they'd gone the extra miles for us, my husband reminded me that we would have gotten 1% or $10 back from Capital One, on that charge. Over the course of a year, that adds up to several hundred dollars we get back every year.

Don't forget also that the client may not normally buy things online and therefore may not feel comfortable putting in their credit card information on their computer. It doesn't matter at all whether YOU think it's safe. If THEY don't feel it's safe, that's what governs their behavior.

Well one way you can accpet credit card is with Square. It is no monthly fee. You pay per use kinda like paypal. If you have a smart phone, or ipad. They will send you a free card reader. It plugs into your phone or ipad in the head phone jack. When you use it that way its the cheapest. But you can also manually enter in cc info and charge them. And you get free automatic daily direct deposits to your bank account.
I think it is 2.75% per card swipe and 3.75% per manual cc. Just go to there website sign up and look in to it all and see if its for you. I think its cool just to show off! Look my phone can take payments! :-)

Be careful. There may be a generational divide over this. Many older people do not think it's cool to send credit card information over the telephone. They think it's risky.

This particular client may have some fears over the security of giving out his credit card info online, and if so, the idea of sending the information over the phone could feel even less comfortable to him.

That is true. So you do not HAVE to use the swipe. You can enter it manually over the phone. :-) But then again you should only have to explain to them that it is the same way ANY other card reader works. When you go into a store and swipe your card, guess what...its hooked to a phone line or internet and does the SAME thing.

To to make sure you understand, you do NOT call it in over the phone. You have a card reader you attach to your phone. It use's a APP you have to download and install. You enter the amount, swipe the card, DONE! Just like anyone would do at ANY store!
