Offline Bartering: $10,000 Wedding for $400 (Are You Kidding) ?

Offline Warriors:

It’s been a while since I posted something meaningful on the Warrior Forum as I’ve been extremely busy lately. Specifically, getting married, moving and adjusting to the married life. And it just dawned on me that I need to share a powerful strategy to make money offline – or at least save thousands of dollars for something you don’t have to pay for retail.

You see, on June 5th my wife Milbe and I got married here in Illinois.
(see our picture below)……and the best news is we paid $400 for a wedding that would have cost around $12,000. How did I do this you ask? The answer is through bartering.

If you think this isn’t big news, look at what was included in the bartering deal.

1) 5– 1 hour massages (for the groomsman, me and my father)
2) 5 - Wedding Day Hair Styles (for the bride and her favorite ladies)
3) Complete Rental Of A Mansion including 5 Romantic Suites for 2 Nights and 3 days
4) 5 Course Meal including Fillet Mignon, Shrimp and meat H’orderves as well as exotic deserts
served “butler style” for 35 people.
5) 10 Bottles of Champagne

What was cool about this deal was that I provided hosting, a new website (they provided the content), professional video with voice over, installation of Google Analytics, creating a Youtube Account and a 16 page marketing plan and review.

The best news is I outsourced the whole thing (except the marketing plan and review) for $400. Not bad for having a $10,000 wedding but it only costs you a measly $400 (and your time).

Hopefully, this encourages you to look at offline consulting career in a different light. And add a whole another tool you can use in your career as an offline marketing consultant. You don’t always have to get paid money…..you can get paid in "services provided".

You don’t need to get married to try bartering. You can use bartering with the following offline businesses:

1) Dental
2) Plumbing
3) Flooring
4) Painting
5) Electricians
6) Massages
7) Hairstyles
8) Auto Dealerships

And the best news is… this is just the start of the companies that you can barter with.

Another reason I LOVE bartering is that it is a great client acquisition strategy. Think about it….the resort perceived they were getting a steal (they got to leverage their mansion which didn't cost them anything more - it was a slow weekend anyway so they gave us the entire mansion to ourselves)…and so did I by outsourcing the majority of the work (a true win-win).

It also allows you to develop a relationship with a “new client” not to mention…they can see your skill set in action which can provide a potential to provide services to them at a later point.

Success to you,

Chris Negro

It's true, I needed a $500 repair on my car. Did some research on a local mechanic, and found his site on page 9 of Google. Amazingly no one was really optimizing for the top kw phrase in the local market so I guaranteed him 1st page of Google in a short time and it would be worth 10x the cost of the repair at minimum :-)

Oh, and congratulations on the wedding.

    True again here,

I'm typing this post on a PC I bartered for a simple website. It's nowhere near the great deal you got Chris so I'm putting my thinking cap back on.

When I was a Carpet Cleaner I charged $300 a month each to clean 10 or so restaurants. $200 was cash and $100 was in food, for a total of $1,000 a month in food. We ate steak and lobster several times a week for about 2 years.

After we stopped working for the chain of restaurants we went out to eat and my (at the time) 10 year old son said to the waitress "I'll have Lobster," I said "He'll have a Hamburger," He said "WHY?" I said because we can't afford lobster this time. He said, "Oh, I thought we were rich." I wonder how this would work for travel. Hmmmm

    CONGRATULATIONS on your Marriage!

Bartering is definitely a very strong way to have alot of luxuries that you otherwise would not be able to afford if done right. I have a few books on my wish list that I would like to read further on the subject. Here is an article of a business who is doing it frugally. How To Get People To Work For Free - Forbes.com

P.S. Pardon my manners......congrats on tying the knot!

I know a friend of mine who barters EVERYTHING. Everything from getting crowns or root canals to hair extensions for his girlfriend (yah...no joke). Pretty clever guy actually...

It's probably one of the better client acquisition strategies I've seen. Especially like a dentist....he/she can knock out a root canal in about 2 hours of their time plus minimal medical expenses (retail cost is around $1000 per root canal).

The dentist perceives they are getting a steel with their exchange for cutting edge marketing services they have no clue on how to do (like a template video for example).

    Congrats Chris!

Thanks for this post also, as it comes at a great time for me. I had been running a scenario through in my head of bartering for something specific I need done and was thinking it would work, but hadn't gone out and tried to find the right business yet.

Now, I am definitely going to be doing this for what I need done.

    Chris,

Congrats on the wedding and the bartering deal......AWESOME...that is all I can say.

Awhile back I had a few business owners talk to me about some type of bartering program/system. I guess it was some type of attempt to "organize" the bartering process in local areas. He told me he was using it for several different things along with other business owners in the community. I kind of "zoned out", just because if I am going to barter...I will do it face to face, no need for "third parties" in the process I guess.

I can't for the life of me remember what it was called though. Have you heard of anything remotely like this in your area? Like a website/system for bartering specific to certain areas? I'm assuming it might also be based on a point system or something, not sure though.

Yeah, I had seen this same type of thing advertised up in Charlotte, NC. It is a group barter type system for member businesses. I believe it is based on a point type system as you mentioned. You provide a service, then get so many points that you can trade in for another service at another business.

Here is the one I had seen up in NC, but I am sure there are more.

Congratulations on your wedding, Chris. You can really get great deals through bartering services because what is predominantly involved is labor, and not tangible goods. As a result, since there is much more leverage to be gained on labor as opposed to physical goods, you can really get incredible deals through bartering - the only catch here is that you should only be bartering for something that you need and want!

I think this is a timely post - because today's economy makes bartering more practical than ever.

I know you say you "only" spent $30 or $400 on your part -but the value is increased because you have the knowledge/experience/contacts to do it.

There is a HUGE Barter Market for offline marketing consultants right now -- especially when you can outsource EVERYTHING. You get more bang for your buck through bartering alone -- and EVEN MORE when you outsource.

Outsourcing your bartering deals is your Coca-Coca Secret -- tell very few people about this as people just don't like other people like us....who leverage our time and get deals like this....so BE VERY CAREFUL on who you tell these things too --the jealousy factor has a tendency to kick in with deals like this . Don't get me wrong this deal has cost me countless hours of time....but it is all well worth it in the end as you get tons more bang for your labor and buck.

        Success to you Kay,

You know - here I am, sitting here in my work chair, and, feeling how tired my back is. It's been borderline hurting for a few days now.

So - I think I will contact some local massage therapists and see if I can get a 2 X 30 minute sessions a week - one for my wife, one for me, in exchange for #1 in Google and being set up in Google Places.

Hm. Wonder what that will do for him?

You know - I am going to be building a house in the next few months. To build my house, I will have to use...

    An electrician
    A Plumber
    A Landscaper
    A drywall man
    A Painter
    A trim guy

I wonder how much I could get knocked off of the price of my house if I got each of these services a website and high up in Google? I have a friend who will be my contractor (and I am going to be marketing for him - got that set up - he is going to give me 1.5% of all the jobs he does - for a $200K house, that adds up VERY quickly.)

    What do you guys think?

You can get it done for free from the persons involved if you are creative with the deal. Of course you'll have to live up to your end of the deal either through the outsourcers involved or your own sweat, but, there is endless potential.

If you can show them you can get them customers then tie the deal up until perpetuity....

P.S. I love using words that Jay uses, lol.

That is a good word - HAHA!

Yeah, I view this market as mostly "untapped." So, there may be some possibilities up there. The main ussue would be demonstrating the value to people that aren't as tech/internet savvy.

J.J. there are bible stacks of information on offline marketing in this forum for free. The psychology of your customer is not the sell of the product, but, the relationship between you and the client. If you listen to some of the people doing offline marketing they do not even mention marketing analytics to a client. They find out what makes the customer tick and fulfill that need. It maybe just speaking of the clients bottom line and providing a solution without the jargon. I am sure you know this just have to practice it in your mind and on paper then go out and do it in the real world.

Sweet deal Chris on your wedding with a beautiful bride too :-)

This past March during Spring Break I bartered a condo at Keystone in the River Run area for 4 nights for some article marketing and press releases for my kids and I. The condo was first rate as Deion Sanders and his family had stayed in it the week before.

    Cheers!

    Congrats on the wedding!

Barter is definitely a super powerful tool that many people overlook. I've used barter for many things in the past to get huge discounts on cars, rentals, music instruments, etc...

There's a story of a guy that used barter to trade up from a red paperclip to a years worth of rental in a huge house by simply 'trading up' each time he traded something. And if I remember correctly, he did it entirely from his blog.

Point is, if you have a valuable skill set, you can trade for almost anything... but also don't forget that you can trade items that you no longer want, for things you might.

    EDIT: Here's the link: http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com/...p-project.html

I've recently joined some barter groups in the last 2 weeks and someone emailed me about some round trip buddy passes on Southwest Airlines.

They want a shopping cart website and some seo done....but I'm going to have to tell her.....that websites and seo are alot more labor intensive which would not warrant the $500-$600 worth of round trip buddies passes on Southwest.

Perhaps I can offer her a template or custom video which can be outsourced for $30-$90.

I'm really starting to think offline bartering can be addicting -- now that I'm thinking of all the possibilities.

I've been thinking for years about how this failing economy will simply have to revert back to the old 'trading post' type of system that has much more real lasting value than - paper notes.

      Back to the 'wild west!

Brilliant and timely - now I'm trying to figure out this IM/offline stuff and you have presented quite a wonderful example.

      God Bless you & yours!

ps: If u still have the vid template you provided to the photographer - I'd love to see it but no matter if not!

QUOTE=chrisnegro;2669470]I've recently joined some barter groups in the last 2 weeks and someone emailed me about some round trip buddy passes on Southwest Airlines.

You're right Chris. Bartering is addictive. When I started my offline consulting I decided to go after businesses that I use or need their service as a way to build my business.

You'll be amazed at what you can get. Photographer, Doctor, Hair stylist, Printing company etc. And the best part about this strategy is your actually using your client, which helps you market them better.

I find most businesses don't know their USP. If you utilize their services you can find their USP and profit leaks, and they'll think you're a genius. I could write a book on the benefits of bartering because I've been doing it for years. I love it!!!

The key to successful bartering is to NOT approach the potential partner as YOU being the person in need of THEIR service. Approach them with the prospect of THEM receiving great value and not having to incur additional expenses against their budget.

Well done. I find that small business owners are very open to trade.

If you have an iphone4, just film a small vid of their business, edit w/ imovie for iphone, upload to youtube, title it correctly and voila in 5 min. they have online video promotion.

Awesome post, it has really gotten my wheels turning. Since my internet marketing skills are rather low I think i'll start small with this bartering stuff.

I'm thinking maybe barter with a pizza shop for 1 pizza a month for a year in exchange for a google places listing with basic optimization done.

I can already taste the pineapple and bacon delight in my mouth. I love it!

One nice thing I do is offer my own script for my publishing business. I have certificates in 100, 500, and 1000 dollar amounts. These are transferable and numbered.

It's a great way to trade services if you cannot trade exactly your services for another... just let the business know that they can trade the certificates for something they need from someone else... Almost like affiliate marketing in the offline world.

Another Update here....just secured an Optometrist Business in which my wife and I are getting 20 high end pair of glasses, 2 eye exams and 2 pair of contact lenses for one year (about a $1000 value) for a website and video for $2500.

    The following is our benefit:

    1) Free glasses, exam and contacts for my wife and I (saved $1000)
    2) $1500 cash
    3) A new client...in which will see the quality of my work...in which I can pitch them a monthly retainer on the back end.

At a glance, this may not seem like much....but when you approach your offline clients (with a farmers mindset of planting, reaping and harvesting), the long term benefits of SOLID RELATIONSHIPS built on many years of trust and service ......can be VERY rewarding. I'm not even talking about referrals here either.

    Success to you,

Bartering is a great way to do business. I am a member of a barter group (IMS Barter) they are the largest in the country. I do around $10K of barter every year and usually turn down much more as I only use it for filling in between cash clients.

I have seen many business owners are vary cautious about joining the group mostly because they cant grasp how it works in a group setting. It is a valuable part of my business and should be a part of yours too.

So, you just got married, eh? Marriage is the ultimate extreme of perpetual bartering, isn't it? I'm sure you are finding that out!

Congratulations to you and your bride.

I know the barter clubs are a logical extension of what you did with the wedding. So, I thought why shouldn't you also be able to sell those services or products to whomever you wanted within the original barter agreement, if you don't need or want them.

Consider this also ... your barter deals/type, and use them as a contribution into your community, as a way to meet and connect with other prospects.

For example, barter with a dentist for services that you then donate to local charity, like a shelter for battered women, or to half way house for people struggling to get back on their feet. Do the charity type stuff through an organization with members who are civic leaders who might just need your services. Churches quietly take care of lots of people in need.

You will quickly find yourself being the go-to-guy when somebody needs something. Just one thing, do charity work quietly with sincerity. People will notice.

Your funny TB.... yes...she is a wonderful woman and I am reminded by the Grace of God and how much He gives even though we do not deserve it all the time.

In terms of bartering...I'm finding out what a WONDERFUL CLIENT ACQUISITION STRATEGY in which relationship can be built and plus they can see what you actually do for them. Once the barter is over (and you have impressed them), you can offer them back end services and put them on a nice monthly retainer.

Funnily enough, bartering is not something I've thought too much about, yet I certainly already do it without even realizing.

I eat at a really great restaurant for free, and all I did was a few bits of website maintenance for them, and it took me a couple of hours in total. Literally all I did was fix their links, restructure some content, and clean up their CSS.

All they actually wanted me to do was fix their menu links which would have taken a couple of minutes, but going that extra mile clearly did me a favor! I've had hundreds of £ worth of service from them and continue to get it. They're also now paying me to build them a better website, so I guess I'm getting the best of both worlds right? Both money AND services, from the same business. It's like getting a bonus really.

It just goes to show, whether it be Internet marketing or another type of web service such as web design, you can get really strong benefits, and it is indeed a lot to do with the relationships you build. Be nice, be helpful, and go the extra mile...

Reading through this thread has gotten me thinking about the possibilities and potential of bartering. I want to challenge myself to barter for something of really high value

Great thread. But what's missing is the how to do it bit. What approaches work best.

I tried bartering with a local hairdresser and while they initially set yes and agreed to a meeting the following week, when I ran to confirm the meeting time they had thought about and decided they could not handle any more customers.

Personally, I would not advice the email approach but it could be done the personal touch is always better because you need something from the barter. Why hide behind an email.

However, if you go to the business owner and say "look...I own a marketing firm and have a financial incentive to make my clients money and noticed you have a business here that could possibly need some marketing done".

However, 'm not looking to make any money off of you but I'd be willing to do some marketing for you in exchange for some work done on my teeth. Is this something you are open to Mr. Business Owner?

This is what I would recommend!

This is a great thread! Thanks for sharing, Chris! There are a lot of businesses (especially service providers) that have HUGE margins which opens up the possibilities to barter and get things done for pennies on the dollar.

Of course, some products have a lot of margin as well... furniture, jewelry, etc. When looking at a barter deal, forget about the retail price, and look at the actual cost of the product or service to the business owner.

I've bartered for hotel rooms, auto work, etc. You can even get really creative and sell the items or services you've bartered to receive in exchange for cash and/or other products/services that you might have more interest in.

Vegas Vince, a fellow Warrior, has a course that goes into a lot of detail regarding bartering. Definitely worth a look for those interested in this.

Did you contact him via email, phone, or in person? Would you mind sharing what you said? I did a round of about 20 emails earlier this week and only had one response, but I am happy to report that I will be bartering for some (much needed) massage therapy services. However, I wonder if I could have worded the email differently to get more responses. I will likely follow up via phone or in-person with those who didn't reply.

Anything can be bartered. Actually...I've turned turn barter deals lately as (although I get some benefit that I need) they are clients that I knew there wouldn't be any money short or long term with this business.

I actually had to make a "business decision" to turn the client down. Just like some regular clients, sometimes you have to make a "business decision" to turn them down.

In bartering, business principles do not change just because its a barter deal.

P.S. Let us know how you barter deal goes with your mechanic.

      Success to you,

Chris, do you mean to say that you turned down these clients because you felt like you'd never get anything other than barter deals from them (i.e. they didn't have the liquid cash to pay for anything then, or in the foreseeable future)?

They just didn't look like a good client (in light of my current business load )that I could justify a barter deal with. The Barter wasn't really something I needed and I could tell that they had no money at all to afford my services on the back-end.

REMEMBER...part of my barter strategy is that barter is a client acquisition strategy in which I have the potential to get the client on a monthly retainer on the back-end. This client had NO MEANS of affording any back-end marketing services.

Thus I made a "business decision" to turn them down. Hope this clarifies Paul!

Congrats on the marriage and new life! And thanks for starting this thread. So many good ideas, success stories and positive energy.

            Sometimes it is just timing.

I just agreed to one with a local chiropractor for $1,600 worth of treatments over the next 6 months in marketing and graphic design. Funny thing is I was in need and approached him. He's been an advertising customer for several years and I was hoping that our relationship might score me an appt before the holidays and a discount on that first marathon visit. Little did I know he was in need of marketing help and he proposed the barter before I knew it.

All these great stories and ideas has me inspired to be more open.

What a great story! Congrats to you and your wife.

I've done 2-3 barter deals, but only on a small scale. I did one for a new AC unit - my biggest swap, for roughly 4k.

Actually bartering can be quite addicting...especially when you are outsourcing for pennies on the dollar - kind like the after christmas sales that slash prices by 90%

@mindykoch - Don't be afraid to ask because some people view Internet Marketing as being very difficult so they are definitely receptive to trading services. Yesterday I started bartering getting my house cleaning done on a monthly basis for some SEO work and last year I bartered 4 days in Keystone for some linkbuilding services.

      Good Luck :-)

Bartering works as not only the client sees it as a deal also, but you basically show you trust his/her expertise by bartering for HIS/HER work. But, yeah, it better be for something you want!

I'm in the process of doing this with a unique chiropractor. I do wonder what his reaction will be when he sees he'll have to pay ON TOP of offering his services. Basically, I'm letting him have a discount at face value of what he would have cost me, but as I'm charging more, I have to make him pay also. I'll see how that goes this week.

Congrats on your wedding. And $10 000 for $400, that is quite a deal!

Exactly...what is so cool about bartering is that the business owners see it as an AMAZING DEAL for them. I like doing business with people that LOVE doing business with you (so much more refreshing).

3 weeks ago I was at a barber. As my hair grows fast I have to be there again in 1 week or so. Why not make a mock-up of a website and get it to them for FREE and they'll cut my hair next half year till spring comes.

There is so much possibilities with this actually. In fact if you own a house this is perfect for you as you can barter the following services:

      1) Plumbing
      2) Heating and Air-conditioning (need a new air-conditioner in your house)
      3) Washer and Dryer
      4) Kitchen and counter-tops (I don't know about you...but I like Marble please )
      5) Hard Wood or Tile Floors
      6) How about a Hot Tub or Pool

Are you starting to see the potential of this? Seriously Bartering is a lot of fun as the business owner gets alot of his stuff for cost! Especially service oriented companies....its NOTHING to for them to knock out a tile floor (for example) in a couple of hours...and chances are they got the tile from a previous job. You can probably get something like this done in your home and "your give" would be an outsourced website for $150 bucks.

This is a great strategy. My brother got married in June of this year, and I bartered the best wedding photography package from the best photographer in our area, in exchange for Google Places work and social media work.

It was a win-win-win situation. My brother and his wife pretty much paid for their entire wedding, so not having to worry about the photography was huge for them. The photographer got a great deal on some marketing work (which resulted in almost tripling their exposure on Google, as well as some other great results), and I got the personal satisfaction of being able to give my brother and his wife something that they will treasure forever.

Bartering is effective, and is a GREAT way to get some business (and free stuff) if you're just starting out.

So...I have to ask....how much did you outsource the job for or (if you did it yourself) how long did it take you to do the job ?

All I did was outsource a template video for $25-$30

I did it myself. I had them dominating most of the local photography keywords in about a month (for a 25 mile radius, including the 2nd biggest city in New England, which is 25 miles away). Total work was maybe 5 hours to get them there. Monthly maintenance ever since has been outsourced (100 citations for $10, every month). It took me about 10 minutes to set up their Facebook page. A few months later it took me about an hour to set up a contest for them. I still help them admin the Facebook page. I spend a couple hours a month on that.

Needless to say, they just had a very successful senior portrait season.

Not as great of a deal as you got, but I'm still happy with it.

The potential is limitless actually. And I'm sensing bartering is going to grow BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS over the next 10 years. So practice your bartering skills now as this phenomenon is just at the beginning stages of becoming a big part of the way business is done in the future (I know this is a bold statement to make...but its true)

        What a fantastic story!!

If I'm working with my friends, I generally will barter - anything from backrubs (my life right now is rather stressful, so any downtime makes me really happy), food (food is good), martial arts training, etc.etc.etc.

My folks have been married for almost 60 years, and I'm going for 18 years this year - when you've found the right person for you, it rocks!

Just goes along with how to get clients. Talk to everyone. Tell them what you do and how you do it. Most will have their own questions because believe me, modern marketing is on their minds A LOT!

      RSABIAN:

Bartering is not something that should be a primary way to make money as an offline marketing consultant. It should be intertwined with your already cash paying clients.

But to answer your question, you don't (in my opinion) want your first client to be a barter client. In my opinion, newer or beginning consultants shouldn't be pitching barter deals in the beginning of their learning/confidence curve.

If your serious about being an offline marketing consultant (as a career), you need to learn the daily grind of how to get local clients to give you checks first (which is more challenging) then GRADUATE slowly to incorporate barter deals (less challenging).

It just makes TONS more sense starting out with real paying clients and then GRADUATE into bartering. Again...this is my opinion....but that would be advice for someone just starting out.

      Hope this helps,
