Local List Building-Your Thought?

If anyone would like to contribute ideas I think this will benefit us all.

Here's my idea:

I want to create free reports to offer specific local businesses to build lists but not just in my market, across many mid to large markets across the USA, ie... "7 Plumbers Secrets to Power Marketing for Rapid Profits",
"7 Roofers Secrets to Power Marketing for Rapid Profits", etc (didn't settle on name actually).

What are some ways you can think of to reach these specialty services across the states?

Thanks, let's share and grow together.

Can I ask a question? What does "list building" mean?

    Jeremy,
I believe he wants to help the local business build their Opt In Email List of customers/potential customers by giving away free reports that he would create for them. "List Building" is just building of the Opt In Email List.

    Ah. I understand.

A restaurant approach would be to collect names/email addresses for a restaurant (for a free birthday dinner or something along those lines) and then email specials out. Right?

    Jeremy,
Yes, that would be pretty much right. The Free WSO I have in my sig covers some of the thinking behind this method, only I key a little bit more on another method that can be even better, especially for restaurants. Just in case you'd want to check it out.

But, yes, the follow up with current customers is huge as you don't have to pay any more for advertising to them, you can just contact them and get them back into your business.

Well my primary goal to begin with is to build a list for myself so I can market to them at some other point. (building their list would be one offering at some point). But I want to offer them free, valuable business building ideas along the way.

So what is the best way to collect these client optins? What do plumbers and foot doctors search for that they could find my offer or what are some better ways?

Sure, you can post some stuff online and hope they search for you and find you, but like James mentioned, I think your best approach here is to go after these prospects directly.

Along with direct mail, take a minute to think about who else already does business with the prospects you want to target here and think of ways they can help you get your message across - and also consider that many trade groups like this have associations they belong to or publications they subscribe to and you could advertise on their websites or in their publications.

Personally, I'm focusing now on selling mobile websites to restaurants so I could contact them directly...or...I could advertise on restaurant association websites that these people visit or partner with companies that sell them restaurant supplies or menus etc....

      HTH,

      Steve

What I would suggest are juicy, content-filled articles, with an opt-in for the "best tip of the month."

Have you considered a postcard with a PURL script?

Postcards are a simple and cheap way to reach your audience (you can get a national list of plumbers pretty cheap) then you use what's called a PURL (Personal URL) script to personalize your message.

So if they prospects name is James Foster, you can send a postcard like ...

"7 Ways To Increase Sales In Your Plumbing Business In 30 Days Or Less
    Hi James Foster,
blah blah blah - benefits benefits benefits
    Visit www.yourplumbingrelateddomain.com/jamesfoster"

Because the url actually has their name in it, A LOT of those prospects will go check out your site.

(The PURL script itself is a little script you put on your website that you also upload all your prospects names into using a database. That's how it knows what urls to create)

Thats a cool idea but where do you get a PURL script and is there one for wordpress.

Also can I have like a template and have slightly different content on each page?

I know the thread is a little old but PURLs can be a great way to approach local businesses using things like postcard marketing etc. Check my sig for my current WSO for a Wordpress PURL plugin.

It depends what PURL script you use. WP Personalizer (the plugin in my sig) allows you to use shortcodes to insert whatever info you want so that could be info about the owners business, their competitors, industry, you name it.

Have you thought of asking a few plumbers what they would type into Google if they wanted to learn how to promote their business better?

That would probably be the best thing you could do.

And then do some SEO, Social Media, Blogging, Video, Press Releases, Whatever.....

To get your stuff there whenever a plumber would type that into the Search Engines.
