What is your average response rate from offering your services by email, direct mail or post card?

Back when I used email, the response was around 1%. I got tired of the tedious work of pulling email addresses, spam complaints, and low conversions from those that did respond. It is the main reason I moved into telemarketing.

You certainly can get a high response rate with email if you're personalizing each email and using a little well thought out psychology.

I know that some members at offlinebiz.com are using the Amazing 4 Line Letter by email and getting a good response.

You should probably define what you mean by response rate when you're talking about email.

It's not hard to get over 25% of the businesses you send an email to email you back but converting them into paying clients is a lot more difficult.

One big secret is if a business owner emails you back immediately call him on the telephone.

The sooner you go from online communication to person to person communication the higher your response rate is likely to be.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

If it's cold, traditionally 1 to 2 percent would be normal. Like the earlier poster alluded to though, if you're marketing to a list you've developed, then you could be looking at much higher conversion ratios.

Graham is right, if you're doing a cold direct mail letter, 1 - 2% is good.... actually it's better than good, it's border line great (depending on the offer).

I actually have an email list of local people interested in getting coupons from local businesses.... that list, on the other hand, had an open rate of 105% (yup, some people opened it twice) and a CTR somewhere in the 90% range.

Just depends on what you're doing.

@Etak & Reapr: I guess the idea behind email marketing is to FIRST get your prospective clients to actually read the email... from my own experience, carefully crafting the 'subject line' is very important....

    I use subject lines like:
    - May I bring Dr. Roosenvelt more leads?
    - Seattle Dentists have too much competition
    - Can't find Dr. Roosenvelt website on Google

and then offer them as much VALUE and SAFETY as possible (e.g pay only after service is delivered) in the content area of the email...

After that, if they do decide to contact you, everything is easier, even meeting with them, because they already get the idea of whatever it is we are offering them.... they are no longer so defensive....

I am also curious about cold-calling, I think people who are good at this can get results faster even though the conversion rate is very low

The OP started a good thread. I am more interested in not just response rates but conversions as a metric to determine what i need to strive for. Primarily focused on snail mail but would love to hear it for email and cold calls too.

I'm currently getting around 15-20% response rate back from the initial email that I sent out. After completing a small piece of work which forms part of the emailed offer, I'm usually converting at least half of the respondents. A few more tend to trickle through after a couple of months when they have had more time to think about how I can help them.

In addition, I tend to get 2-3 more clients every month from a follow-up email or telephone call that I do 2 weeks and 4 weeks after the initial point of contact.

I do like Andrew's idea above of immediately calling back someone that replies to an email. I'm going to try that over the next few weeks and will see what difference it makes to the conversions.
