Google Places - changing company details

I've always been under the impression that to get the best optimized google places, there can be no differences anywhere (like other biz listings) in the company details. Everywhere should show exactly the same thing - biz directories, Yelp, etc.

My client has just employed my services but, during the time I'll be setting up a local marketing campaign, he will be moving offices, and will end up with a new phone number. Will this affect google places badly if I go in and update/change details, or should I wait until he finds a new place

Also, I've always thought that a local phone number is best for local search in google places, but one solution might be to get a freecall or local call number that diverts to anywhere. Will not having a local number affect google places? - Some of the competition just have mobile numbers and are listing in the 7 box ok.

BTW - this in in Australia.

Any advice appreciated - cheers.

I would highly recommend waiting for the client to move address.

All the citations etc that you build will need to include the new address and tel number.

You will also have to confirm the new address/phone number.

If you optimize now and then change later you will lose rank.

Of course it depends on the competitiveness of the keywords you are looking to rank for.

You would be best to have a localised number as recently the 1300 and 1800 numbers don't seem to take in OZ...

Plus most people locally expect to call a "Local Number"

      regards

During my testing I've been able to rank in the 7-box using an 866 number. Actually is still ranking even though I've deleted the listing and stopped linking months ago. I've been thinking about leasing the phone number to a client in this particular industry but I haven't had time to do that and it's just there sitting on page 1 of Google doing nothing.
