Hostagator Affiliates and offline Marketing..Anyone Doing it?

I want to build websites for people at a very low price if they sign with hostagtor through my affiliate link. I know this is no new idea, I just want to see if anyone has had problems doing it I have read some horror stories with Hostagators affiliate program.

I believe off line I can sell this very easily and make very good but quick sites for offline clients that are keyword optimized.

I just don't want to do all the work for nothing, so I would love your feedback.

    My main line of work isn't web development, but I do occasionally set up Wordpress blogs for clients.

    If they don't already have hosting, I send them an affiliate link to Hostgator and have them sign up. I offer them a discount for using my link. I do this not only to make a few extra bucks, but because I know HG is outstanding and I have a lot of experience with their platform, having been a customer of theirs for a while.

    Another benefit to this is that I don't have to deal with paying for hosting like I would if I hosted their site myself on say Rackspace for instance. They sign up, pick the package they need and send me the login info and I go to town. I don't have to handle their credit card info or any of that.

    One thing to consider is the fact that almost everyone has a website now... which means they'll probably already have hosting and may want to continue with that they already have. For those who start out fresh with a brand new site, send them your affiliate link.

      That is what makes this so appealing to me where I am from no one has a website... it is a huge slowly growing market

    Hey Cathy,

    We did this a couple years ago and it was a mess. Low paying customers can give you BIG headaches.

    But the technique is used by many with success.

    Free websites and hostgator works well, hit up the phones and get cold calling for people after very simple web design like 5 pages or less. Explain you get a commission from them buying the web hosting so they are not thinking oh yeah.. this sounds to good to be true.. type of thing. You could always then upsell them on other services like SEO and marketing services.

    I don't have it as one of my income streams, but whenever a client asks for my opinion, I suggest them hostgator, because, I have been with them and like my experience.

    The affiliate program worked well for me, always got paid on time.

    You can also be a Hostgator re-seller, where you set up your own hosting site and calculate what you want to charge for various hosting packages.

    You can do that with no problem.

    The only individual to ever sign up to hostgator with a free promo code using my affiliate link canceled after 15 days so guess what there went my $100.00 commission. I would not recommend using host gator either they take a long for domain names to resolve to longer then a day. I have used them for personal websites in the past. So I speak from experience. If you are looking for huge commissions that are stable and people stay check out godaddy.com. they are part of cjdotcom and you will actually get paid more if you use cjdotcom check them out to. Good luck though I have done that model in the past for a few friends as well and made a good little chunk of change.

    you also have other affiliate options / such as weebly accounts, that offer a % (this can also be built out into a text / blog / forum / forms / surveys / picture albums ++) / auto responders such as i contact / there are back link services that also offer affiliate options and lots of other options you can keep in your little bag of tricks / as well as your hosting / host gator options as mentioned.

    Thanks for all the tips, and experiences everyone shared.

    Does anyone know if I take my laptop to the client with my 3G internet connection and insure they are signing up with my affiliate link, whether Hostagator will accept the same IP address each time. The credit card will be different and the personal details but it may just be from the same IP address.

    Basically I want to insure the commission before I start working on a website for free.

      Namecheap + Hostgator is faster then a bullet.

      You pay the domain name, configure DNS (in Express checkout is configured already) and when you add the domain to your Hostgator account, you hit the URL and it's there, online, already.

      Faster then this only superman...

        Yeah, I use both companies and its instantaneous for DNS transfers. So I am also speaking from experience and I have never had to wait any longer than hitting the accept button on Host Gator.

          Based on one experience? The host doesn't determine how long it takes for your domain to propagate. Godaddy is not recommended as marketer-friendly.

          It's not Hostagator - it's Hostgator. I thought it was a typo until I saw it reapeated.

          I must be tech challenged - have never seen a new domain propagate instantly. Are you talking about propagating or transferring a domain?

          I've had new domains take a few hours or up to 2 days to fully propagate across the internet. Am I missing something good?

          EDIT: Cathy - most complaints are from those using CJ to sell Hostgator from what I've read. I've used the direct affiliate link from Hostgator and get paid just fine except when someone didn't pay for their second month of hosting.

            Thank so much, I have visited the Hostgator site a whole bunch of times and I seriously thought I read Hostagtor.... Thanks for the correction.

            Thank you for your experience with the affiliate program I was going to only opt for the direct affiliate program.

    Thanks for the advice guys, I am not a fan of Godaddy as a hosting company. Many respected warriors have had nightmare experiences with godaddy hosting.

    I also believe that a non cPanel host is not a great idea and I like seperating my domain regstrar and my hosting company.

    You should read some reference about Hostgator Hosting review and their affiliate program before becoming a affiliate. I am a Hostgator Affiliate but total money earnings is not good as I think

    Host Gator's terms appear to prohibit offering an incentive to use your affiliate link, though:

    "Incentivized commissions, and offering any form of incentive to obtain a sale is forbidden, unless prior approval is given and cleared by HostGator Staff."

    They may view your offer that way, I don't know for sure.

    Look into the reseller option with Hostgator.

    You will get the recurring revenue in place of the one time comission (and on going support so pick your clients carefully ;-) ).

    vikramd, you have suggested the best solution, because you can easily charge more and make more money with that idea. This idea look like you are running your own web hosting company but only to those your clients whom you intend to build your free website for.
