Anyone getting results (traffic) doing SEO for service businesses that do most business locally in 20k +/- population towns and having success? I really wonder about search volume in smaller towns.

I think it depends on what services you are targeting in fact lots of factors including season and demographics will add to the success you accomplish

In such a small town I don't think SEO is as important. SEM is more relevant I think, work out some promotions etc.

They must have decent amount of searches. I've helped people get high rankings in towns twice that size but there weren't enough searches to give them much business from it. I've had other businesses that did get business from the higher rankings though jin the same cities.

But in general now I only go after bigger cities with more searches.

Why do you say that? Because there is not enough search volume in small towns whereas with SEM/PPC you pay per click?

Well I think you could easy go for theses smaller towns.

Seo would be very easy, as the competition is very low.

You could often rank at the top 3 in 1-2 months. No problem I think.

Just write some good related content to your business and use the keywords you want to be found at. Build a few links. 10-30 links, and you are on your way.

What I do when I make local seo, is usinbg the town name as a part of the keywords.

I found it better to go after bigger cities.

More people = more traffic = higher consulting fees for time invested
