Are You Helping Your Clients Become Better Marketers?

That IS the point right?

If it isn't, and you're in some other business, then go on to the next SEO-related topic.

This morning, I logged into my LinkedIn.com account, where I am connected with several thousand people. Of course, this means that I get all kinds of unsolicited messages, tantamount to spam. Most get ignored and deleted. But this morning I got one that caught my eye because it was a classic, textbook example of just how bad small business marketing can be.

Now, what is the obvious, glaring mistake with this message?

I think there is maybe ONE thing in the entire message that could remotely be considered a benefit statement for the prospect - and that is couched behind yet another "WE" subject in the sentence.

It's copywriting at its worst. It's puke. It made my head hurt to read such a self-aggrandizing piece of tripe.

Why would I remotely consider doing business with this company?

So I took a minute and actually replied to the poor sap...

Just an FYI to help you become a better marketer.

Nearly everything you've written in this message is company-centric.

"We..."
"We..."
"We..."

You realize that your prospective customer doesn't care that you're about growth. Your statement about growing ideas that grow business is nebulous and meaningless. It doesn't matter if YOU take pride in what you do. Your work illustraing the world-class talents that you employ means nothing to me.

And so on...

Answer this:

"Why should I do business with you and your company RIGHT NOW as opposed to any number of your competitors?"

You're not selling. You're blowing your own horn.

My recommendation is to secure the services of a professional marketing copywriter that can assist you in crafting a CUSTOMER-CENTRIC message for your firm instead of wasting time with COMPANY-CENTRIC messages that prospects don't care about.

I can guarantee you that your sales will improve.

Normally, I charge a lot of money for this kind of coaching, but I felt that your message needed a lot of assistance.

Take it or leave it. You didn't pay anything for it.

Now, do you see the fundamental, moneymaking opportunity here?

I wasn't trying to be mean or belittle the guy for no good reason.

My goal is to hopefully help him become a better marketer by recognizing the skewed message he's spending his time (money) blasting out to people.

Helping small businesses simply refine and sharpen their message will improve their sales.

Well funny thing about "teachable moments".... in my experience, in most cases, people aren't generally receptive to criticism unless they're already paying you for it.

So, I am not necessarily holding my breath.

But it does become a good thing for other marketing consultants to consider in their desire to create revenue by assisting small businesses.

All the SEO services in the world won't help a business with a crap marketing message.
