Survey for Offline Businesses

Hi everyone,

I'm going to a small conference which could be best compared to a chamber of commerce meeting with lots of small business owners. I am going to have a booth and I wanted to use the opportunity to generate some leads. I wanted to create a short 5/6 question survey and wanted to get your feedback on what questions you think would be important to ask someone about their online presence / marketing.

Some that I came up with:

1) Do you capture visitor information (for autoresponder, but maybe should be worded differently for better effect.

2) How many visitors do you get to your site a month (multiple choice)

3) How many leads does your website generate every month

4) Do you have a social media presence?

.....any more ideas??

Thanks!!

Rabs, methinks you can also focus on benefits for them, as what Zoro had shared. You probably have something in mind to help them to boost sales and profitability, but you're looking to capture their attention then show them how you can help them. May be good to consider to create a word-of-mouth buzz too prior to the day itself. Perhaps also hire some people to chat up with them, get their name cards etc.

Maybe you can also do freebies giveouts! =)

I think it depends on how savvy they are about the internet. If they are like most small business owners, and you asked them how many leads they get from their site, many will probably have no clue. And so the question may make them feel like they're aren't on top of things (which they aren't, of course). Although that may bring out their "pain," it may drive them into a hole as well.

You might ask questions around that idea, but not so they look bad. For example, you might ask: Do you have a system in place on your website to measure the leads you get from it?

This type of question does a few things through supposition.

    1. It presupposes that leads can be gotten from their website (and they can, of course).

    2. It presupposes that such a system exists (and it does, of course).

    3. It presupposes that there are people out there doing it (and there are, of course).

    4. And even more subtly, it presupposes that they could have a system like this on their website (and they could, of course ... if they hooked up with you )

You might also try Likert Scale questions (1=strongly disagree and 5=strongly agree).

In any case, you might look to actually start "selling" them in a non-obvious way with the questions. They think they are innocently answering your questions, but really they are learning about what's possible (and by implication, what you can do for them).

Of course you might also get some interesting data along the way, but I wouldn't "put them on the spot" for this data (such as asking for numbers that they probably don't have). I would focus on the presupposition tactic.

By the way, presupposition is one of the bigger ideas in NLP, so you can read more about by searching for it. I'm not into it enough to know the ins and outs of it, but the basic concept itself is fairly simple once you get a hold of it, and I believe it can be very effective.

To run a successful survey, often times it works best have something in it for the biz owner. Why not run a drawing for a free 3 month marketing campaign, website build or design, etc for those willing to complete the survey?
