Does business want to get ranked for Google Place or Organic search ?

After the change of Google Places, the organic search result is placed down to the bottom of the 1st page. I'm wondering whether businesses still want to pay for SEO services to get their sites ranked on the 1st page of Google for organic search. I think they want to get their sites ranked on Google Places rather than organic search right now. What do you think?

Thanks for your opinion.

    Hi Joe

It's a smart move by Google. What they have done is create a situation whereby from a local business perspective you will need "Both" organic and Google Places.

It seems that this way they will "wash" the crap out and only the cream will rise to the top.

If somebody wants a GP listing to "stay" in the top spots they will need to have relevant backlinks to the website as well.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards

I think that overall, people and businesses still place more stock in Google organic listings than Google Places. I have consulted with many businesses over the last few months, and the overwhelming consensus I get is that the organic listings still outweigh Google Places and carry more weight in the minds of businesses and consumers.

That will be their mindset until you ask them to do a search for their industry with the geo modifier and they see that the whole first page is Google Places listings.

      No?

In my opinion, Goolge is now using the organic rankings to decide where to start the map listing. One of my clients was at the bottom of the maps box and fifth position in the organic (*note* the first non-review site in the organics). With the new integration of the maps and organics, Google now starts the map listing at my clients 5th position making it the first map listing and organic listing.
Point of story, the organic listings are now more important than ever for Google places.

If this is confusing I will provide screen shots upon request.

From my experience all they want is to first see their business name no 1 on Google.

After that they want their phone to call with orders and could not give a damn about positioning.

      Hi Quentin

      Agreed.

If global business then organic is the way to go.

If local then it looks like the mixture of organic and Google Places will be needed to get either of them as the top listings.

      regards

That means for local business, they will go for Google places, right?
But for global or internation business, they will go for organic listing.

My concern is SEO services for local business might not work now
because they tend to go for Google places services.

      Thanks for your input.

Yes, it seems that Google has merged the results as for many of my clients we are now number #1 in the Maps/Places because of the merge where they were no where to be found before.

Actually I have never had a client ask about google places and I have quite a lot. Some do mention maps but thats about it. They are quite surprised when I tell them about it.

Instead of making this an "either-or" proposition, you should sell your clients on the benefits of having both. This way they can totally dominate the first page of Google and see exponentially better results, because by being ranked multiple times on the first page then they'd be seen as the authority figure in their industry/business.

I don't think business have a problem still paying for the services.
I offer Google Places optimization to business.
I utilize both Google Places and organic results to get businesses listed.
    I think it's great.
It's just more spots I can have a business listed.
It makes the client happier to be in more spots, and when the client is happy, he continues to pay. When he continues to pay, I am happy!
