People keep talking about how Google doesn't show any volume for niche local keyphrases even though they are searched for but when I use the keyword tool, I found a keyphrase with monthly volume of 12 and one with <10.

Anyone have an idea what's going on here? Does Google just arbitrarily report on a few phrases with minimal volume but not on others? Confusing!

    Hello,

As a general rule, I would say you can optimize one page with 3 keywords or phrases. I would recommend starting with one or two. Depending on who you talk to, your percentage of keywords in your text should be between three and five percent of the total content on the site. I have seen site tops with percentages as high as ten. There are some free online tools that can tell you the percentage of each word on your site.

    Thanks,

If you are optimized for keywords with no search volume; it may not be worth it.

Try going for cities instead of small areas like:

    atlanta plumber
    philadelphia pa lawyer

you can use these also as an indicator on the amount of traffic you will get to your area such as:

    any town, pa plumber
    any town, pa plumbing

If you are working for a service company; there's not much research to this ; just get 3 - 5 keywords that people should be typing into google and run with them. The most highly targeted and trafficked keywords you can use.

    That's it!

Something to realize is that many times people don't search for "plumber Atlanta" they will just search for "plumber" and Google will use their IP location to determine the results...

Try it out, search for a broad term and see that the results are local...so it's not that people aren't searching...so it's still not a bad thing to target the KW phrase even though the Keyword Tool might not show any searches.

  • Yes, I agree with Mike!

I was confused at the beginning of my local keywords. But I soon noticed that if just typed in the 'keyword' I would get local resutls. so I just used some usual keywords, that I know are Not huge words like 'oakley sunglasses', you have to think like a consumer.

I also noticed that I can get an url or site ranked very quick, IF you actually use the city/keyword as the keyword phrase in exact order. Try it, you'll see.

Usually what i'm doing to see if i can find a valid LOCAL keyword is:

      1) What is my main keyword? (Plumber, Locksmith, Dentist etc...)

      2) Using a Firefox addon to see the search results in the same country i'm targeting.

Search for "Google Global" by RedFly on Google and you will find it!

      3) using the following tool to check for list of locations near the area my client serve, zip codes, suberbs etc.

Search for "local keyword tool"- the first result will be from the site called "5minutesite" on Google.

and than check the results on google using "Instant"- using this feature i can add my "seed" keyword and check what google suggest me as a "valid" keyword.. try adding the order from A-Z before and after your "seed" keyword to see if there is a combination you're missing.

Write down your compatitors websites for each keyword and run it with the Google keyword tool again.
