No Competition... But Still No Luck With Video Marketing 4 Local Business?!?

There was a thread started about how to get easily rank for local keywords with video marketing so u could attract local businesses to obtain your services for 189/month

So I figured I'd try a test campaign with my own business, before i tried to begin to sell this service to other local businesses in the area... and there was no luck: Here's a break down of what I did

My Busniess is a recording studio in Pompano Beach, FL which is about 15 mins away from Fort Lauderdale and 30 mins away from Miami

So I tried to target the keyword Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale

Name of file: Recording Studio

Title: Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale - 10 hours for 4 200

Tags: Recording Studio, Music Production, Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, Pop, Beats, Tracks, Hooks, Songs, Services, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano, Florida, Beach

Bookmarked 10 sites and did 3 relevant back links for Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale

There is little to no competition for the keyword and the listing in the top spot of google has a pr of 1

So I guess my guess my question is.. can someone tell me what I've done wrong or haven't done at all and steer me in the right direction

    You should try writing articles and guest blogging. Also, try a link magnet or link wheel. You should also look into press release submissions.

    Here is my 02 cents:

    1) I would have listed your Tags as this
    Tags: Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale, Recording, Studio, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

    Which would have kept the phrase "Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale" as one keyword. Then divide it up into separate keywords after it. In my opinion this gives more weight to your targeted search term "Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale"

    2) For your title I would have left out "- 10 hours for 4 200" and made sure that was included in the video. I would have just made the title "Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale"

    3) Another trick I do is look at the top Youtube video that is being listed for "Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale" if any and copy their tag words. You may not show up first, but you have a good chance of showing up first in the list of related videos on the right side of the Youtube page. Which mostly likely would result in secondary views and help list you on Google.

      With the new Places integration, I think it will be challenging to place a video from Youtube on page one.

      You could still get it there from your page with good seo technique.

      I am currently running tests on 5 separate methods to accomplish this. So, far I KNOW you can get Google to index a video in less than 24 hours. I KNOW you can get a video to the #1 position in YouTube in less than 24 hours. I KNOW you can get a local video to the #1 position in Google Video.

      I have yet to see the transition to Google combined search for local results. For non-local, it seems as easy as its ever been to place a video on page one.

        I assume you mean it's easy to get #1 for these easy keywords on each video site, not keywords in general right?

    Here is my advice. I did the same thing for my business. It took about 2 weeks for google to get it indexed. I think sometimes it takes a little longer. And I would make sure you get alot more links to that video than the amount you have. You will be surprised to search one day and see it there. Google likes youtube and with links to a video you will rank that higher then a competitors site that hasnt pushed any links back to his site in a while.


    Yes, I also load as many keywords as possible .

    Also on YT, I am not sure if it helps yet, or proven, but I fill out the maps location and etc on YT also. It couldnt hurt.

    you have to realize that the majority of local business owners are not marketing and advertising gurus... they believe in the local paper and that's it

    getting them to buy anything regarding anything online is a hugely education experience and most will shy away from anything even close to $100 a month and if they don't see immediate results they will give up on it immediately

    plus you have to realize that they do not have deep pockets

      Off topic, but if they "do not have deep pockets" you might want to target your prospecting a little bit better...

      That sure is an interesting belief. I guess I shouldn't cash the $2,300 check I got on Thursday from a local client. Or the $1,950 paypal payment that just came in today, or the...........

      In my opinion, asking for $100 does find you those clients who are willing to walk immediately. Getting clients that are commited to paying you $30-500-100k or more for a local business gets you a whole different kind of commitment.

    This is all very interesting. I am just starting to target offline businesses for rankings, etc., and I wouldn't dare charge less than $500 to set it up, and then around $200-$300 to maintain it every month. I agree that if a person cannot pay more than $100, then their budgets are way too tight to make a real commitment. We need to be targeting places that already have a decent ad budget and convince them why that money is better spent with us than the print ads, etc.

    As for the videos, I think that it would require a lot more backlinking, etc., to get it to show up regardless if you are local or not, because more and more people are starting to use video which is going to make that a more competitive arena than it once was.

    I agree that the videos should be used in conjunction with Google Places instead of doing it as an alternative for them.

    @totalpackage - good for you by going for it and uploading a video now as for ranking...a couple of things (actually I could go on and on here, so I'll try to keep things on point)...

    1) No competition? I just searched for "Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale" and after the 7 Google Places Results (in which one of them is sponsored), the remaining results are from sites such as Superpages and Topix...so even though the Google Keyword Tool might show there are no searches per month, there is definitely competition going on here, plus the fact that your target keyword phrase appears to pick up some results from Miami as well...which I'm sure has a ton of recording studios and thus a ton of competition.

    ...BTW, all the people that want to make money with lawyers/attorneys this is the same situation...you might now see a lot of searches per month but the current results are very much entrenched and have been so for a while so moving them can be difficult.

    Alright, let's get to what you can do...

    2) Like mentioned about by JRGautreaux, TAGS, he gave great examples of tags you need to have in there...and enter as many as possible...and enter long-tail ones as well, your current tags are as broad as can be...and don't enter any tags with Miami as you'll only increase your competition.

    3) Description...do me a favor and go to Google, type in your target phrase "Recording Studio in Fort Lauderdale" and then on the left-hand side select Videos.

    OK, I see your video listed second, but see the video listed above yours titled "Debonaire Recording Studio virtual tour"...see the description that is listed under the title...see how the target keyword phrase is highlighted right there...change yours to be the same thing...you want to list your target keyword first in your video's Description.

    4) Did you geo-tag your video when you uploaded it? Meaning did you select that it was uploaded in Fort Lauderdale? If not, just go back in and edit it and do that, it can only help, especially when people are logged in to YouTube.

    5) Backlinks...don't go crazy with bookmarks (I see a ton of Mixx backlinks on your video), here's what to do...go to all your local classified sites (i.e. Craigslist, BackPage, etc.)...register, log in, and post a quick ad in Fort Lauderdale about your studio and enter in a couple anchor text that is hyperlinked to your video.

    6) Embed your video on your site as well...

    7) Views - let's be real here, Google is algorithm based and they have admitted that they use the number of views on YouTube in ranking videos.


    OK, I'll stop there...so there's a few things to get done, but as I stated above you do have some real competition here so your not going to rank 1st page in 2 days, you have to be realistic, but after checking out your target kw phrase it is doable.

      @ mikemac thank u so much for the advice and direction... Well I guess being the newbie that i am to internet marketing (because I focus a lot of my time on my music lol) I didn't analyze the competition correctly.

      With the info i gathered from a back link and a page rank prospective the listings in the top spots just didn't seem like they were going to be much of a mountain to climb, given that i've read on numerous occasions how much google loves itself (youtube)... but i now i have completely different take on the situation and like I said I really appreciate it...

      Will keep everyone informed on how things go and maybe I can be in mike's shoes in a month or so lol

        Also don't depend just on Youtube to get your video to show in google. I've used other popular platforms and found they often show up in SERPs better than Youtube videos do.

          What do you like better than YouTube for ranking videos? I've had decent luck with YouTube but the results seem inconsistent. That is, I can't predict which of my videos will do well, though I use the same treatment on all. I may be making mistakes of course. When one of mine seems to be ranking well for the planned keyword, I find that it's not difficult to improve the ranking more.

    @totalpackage - not a problem and your right Google does love YouTube but it just needs some help to put the right video in the right spot...

    As for the backlinks, yes, anchor them with your kw phrase...

    Good luck and keep posting videos, most people that are interested will check out your video then go to your channel and want to watch some more...so the more videos you have posted the more they can get to know you and you'll increase not only your traffic but also your conversions....let me know if you have any other questions.

      Sometimes they can seem to have dropped into a black pit, and then all of a sudden, up they pop - a bit like a new site getting in the SERPs.

      Using them IN Places for clients is good - they love it. Still put them on You Tube, etc.

      Keith - It seems you have quite a few links pointed to that video. Do you just buy in bulk and not worry much about related sites?

      It also seems there are lots of views to that video, but only one or two comments. I thought that was the type of thing that would raise a red flag at YT. ... Are you sending (paid for) views to that video too?

    As others have said, if your video is doing something else other than ranking, then you've got some real options.

    I've got a client who spends close to 1 grand a month on other media, and when he saw the simple video I put up for him, he was very pleased.

    He is now ready to give me a big chunk of that grand a month and stop using other media, period. I will outsource the web stuff and pocket the rest.

    Simple use of video to please a client, not get rankings, per se.

    I made a dentist site - it went to page 3 quickly...and then disappeared.

    ...For two weeks...

    I was panicking slightly, and then it suddenly popped up on page one and has stayed there since.

    my video on the FIRST PAGE OF GOOGLE!!!!

    I always do YouTube, and I've had good luck with dailymotion and viddler. Right now, for my main keyword phrase (which is in a competitive real estate market), #3 spot on Google is 3 of my videos - 2 from youtube and 1 from viddler. Then I have 2 more (metacafe and dailymotion) on page 2.

    I drive links to all the videos. When I first started with 1 video and got it to page 2, Google was giving the thumbnails for 2 videos - mine and a video of my competitor. I started driving links to my video, and what do you know, those thumbnails for both of our videos started climbing up. So I was helping my competitor!

    So I quickly put up couple more videos to YouTube and drove links to all (plus the other ones listed above - viddler, dailymotion and metacafe). Now, my competitor is pushed back to 4th page. Yea!

      Anyway, some couple of tid bits and advices in here. Anyway another way to gain traffic from youtube. I know this feature is already been there for long time but it's still useful.

      Do a video response. Down on a comment section on youtube, try to post a comment then make sure it's related. Just to make sure your comments are not just a copy and paste. What I mean, comments should be natural. And then add a video response by selecting w/c video you have already uploaded on youtube.

      That way, you can also generate free targeted traffic.
