How to find freelance sales people?

Does anyone have a recommendation on how to find freelance sales people?

Obviously I prefer to post ads free because I'm looking to find people in at least 10 different areas of the US and Canada.

I posted at Craigslist yesterday (no responses yet), and another one (ebay classifieds) and strangely Ebay cancelled the ad. It wasn't hypey or biz oppy in any way (it was a sales rep request).

Wondering if I should be posting as sales rep jobs, (commission only) OR, look for freelancers?

Your thoughts?

Amber

Elance.com has a Sales & Marketing category for posting projects. And you can post for free. Pretty sure it's for pay, though. So make it hourly or per project, and that could help round out your offer and get your helpers and sales.

For straight commissions, revise your sales program, turning it into an affiliate program with tracking links. Example: make it a Clickbank one (if it's not already) so that other affiliate marketers can find it.

Then submit your affiliate program info to forums, directories and other places announcing affiliate programs.

dbarnum - thanks, I was considering the affiliate program aspect, but not sure if it will get enough attention as I want since we know that most affiliates do absolutely nothing (and I say that as someone who has run several in the past).

I'll look at elance and others.

Find people who sell boring products, In England I would be pitching outside the local double glazing firm. Its got to be the most boring thing to pitch. Canvessers are always looking for new and interesting things.

      stevestan - lol!

inhwan park - I thought about going to universities/colleges too but wasn't sure how to approach that.

I'm not a "sales" person really myself - I'm better in the marketing online part - but maybe approaching marketing students might be an idea I could try.

exactly. i went to the business school and just posted the flier the first few times. than i called the career center and asked how i can get jobs posted with them. i got one of my sales reps from the flier. and i paid for a table on "career day" and got the other one there. they had the front lawn set up so we can get tables and the students walk around and spoke with us about the company and the job...

Craigslist can work, but its dicey. I've found that many times their email forwarding doesn't work properly, so you'll want to use your actual email for the reply-to. Unfortunately this will give you a ton of spam so make sure you have a good spam filter.

The other problem with Craigslist is that your job postings will be quickly buried under a ton of fly-by-night get rich quick and MLM offers.

That being said, I have found some good guys through Craigslist. Just delete and repost every couple of days and screen well.

    Good Luck!

I don't believe in freelance sales people. And I don't believe in salesmen based only on commission.

    Why?
They simply are not good in selling.
All the good salespeople are found immediately and hired by corporations with huge salaries.

Well there's a few reasons for it:

      1) Commission only sales people are paid only when they produce - so it's to their benefit/motivation to actually make sales

      2) I've paid people salary in the past - and had minimal results because they'd rather milk their time than produce. (Not just sales, I'm talking other positions too). Won't go there again at least not right now.

      3) You obviously don't live in Canada Ontario payroll taxes are horrendous and have broken many companies. It's just not practical to hire someone on a combination when they haven't proven themselves first.

I actually have stated in my ad that if a person proves themselves, there is potential for permanency down the road.

Just posted on Kijiji Canada to test another source... but it says they're delayed 24 hours.

      We'll see what happens.

I do have 2 universities and 1 major college nearby, so I might look into the aspect of talking to their career centers.

The Amazing Part is posting Ads is just the begining. Be prepared to answer lots fo questions most reps worth their salt will want ot meet you and know what your doing in detail! I used to do sales and so I would ask all kinds of questions about the process and if you seem shaky or not so confident I would never work for you. If you pay me 100% commision I expect some sort of path or support from you at least. '
Ive bought courses on here the forum that teach you to hold Conference Calls and or Webinars and meetings with each interested candidate to cut donw on time needed to interview each individual which has taken me 1-2 hours in the past per candidate.

I'm not saying you can't find good sales people on Craigslist, but there are a lot of flakes out there who respond to ads on Craigslist for sales positions.

All you really need to know is this: Good sales people come at a price. They know they're good, and they know they can make money.

You have the advantage of a still not recovered economy, but that still doesn't mean you don't need to pay out to get the good people.

So when advertising, ask yourself if the compensation you're offering fits the quality of sales person you're looking for.

Commission only can be dangerous because unless the commission opportunity is astounding, it can be hard to draw in top sales people.

You can always try students who are coming out of quality business programs, especially in sales or marketing specific fields.

Keep in mind though sales is something that takes time to master. Which is why many companies spend a lot of time and resources on training their sales staff.

So when you post on places like Craigslist, you need to either make the offer juicy enough that season sales people will go for it, or be prepared to go through crappy rep after crappy rep until you find the right one.

      Good luck with your search!

You will not go out and find a good commission sales person, It works the other way where they will find you. So run some ads / let people know your looking and have a good offer up for grabs or the only thing you will attract is monkeys.

I've had decent results from Craigslist. Also you might want to post on Backpage.com

Also goto Local colleges and post in job section.

I see many people have mixed opinions about how to get good people. This is what we have done:

Our sales force is all 1099 contractors. What we did was create a very nice commission and residual on our local search optimization services then we went and contacted some of the top industries that have those types of individuals..ie insurance, pharmaceuticals, home security, dish network, pest control ect. We ended up signing some of the top players after inviting them all to a training/recruiting meeting where we broke down our pitch, service, and what it meant to them. Most of these guys/girls don't care what they are selling so long as you can answer:

    1. Do I understand what I am selling?
    2. Does this make me enough money?
    3. Do I feel comfortable making the sale?
    4. Do I have to do anything other than sell?
    5. Are there any limitations/quotas/ other disqualifiers?

We then hand-held them on the first one or two sales, then let them loose and they have performed well. What is nice about contracting these type of people is that they already have a ton of contacts, so often they get sales right out of the hole just from their existing networks.

We have also branched out into things such as forums like this one where I am looking for the right type of people as well.

I have read some good and not so good information on this thread....

Commissioned sales is the best way to go....

      Hands down.

Odesk or some of the other websites are great... Craigslist people can be a little jenky....

Really... If you want lots of people from lots of different areas... I would use Career Builder.com or Monster.com

Yes... You have to pay. And pay a pretty penny too... But the quality of people you will get is much better.

I like Odesk because it is almost set up like ebay. You can check their credibility and reviews before hiring. Also you can view screenshot of thier work... For outside sales people this is impossible.

For inside sales people this is a must. Unless you have an autodialer. Then you can just monitor the time spent on each call and so on and so forth.

Without an autodialer or Odesk... You have to just hope they aren't on facebook all day billing you hourly.

Some things to consider in your hiring endeavors.
