Shocking Proof You Need to Educate Your Potential Clients!

I was pretty amazed at the results of this recent survey. Just check it out to see what I mean. Just one example was that only 9% of the small businesses think their customers do internet research before coming to them. There are some pretty revealing stats in there:

Very true. Sometimes because of projection you think everyone already knows what you know, but I recently found that to be untrue

It's surprising to me that they didn't have a question on the survey, "What is social media?" and a choice "Don't know."

Last month at a medical appointment, my primary care doctor (who is in his 50s and has a solo practice) asked me what I did, then asked,

        "What is marketing?"

Well these stats only confirm what we already know from our interaction with small business owners.

The opportunity to market and educate SME's is astounding.

    Thanks for the link

Riz, It's true, it does just confirm what we see out there. It's still a little shocking though to see in numbers just how many business owners are that clueless as to what their customers are doing online.

I guess the good thing is that there are a lot of clueless business owners out there to be able to help out, I just wish more of them Knew they needed help.

Does this statement from the article suggest 75% of small business owners believe that their customers did do online research before doing business with them?

And nearly a quarter did not believe their customers did research online before doing business with their company.

It makes me scratch my head when I see business owners who aren't keeping up.

It would appear that with the stats mentioned that almost "anyone" could get business.

However, there is something called "work" that a lot of folks are loathe to experience. It only takes a little of it to get started... especially with the market out there.

      Hi Millard

Yeah you are right. Plenty of business for anyone to get.

Anyone who puts in some effort that is.

      Regards

I don't think it's such a mystery. Most of us, whatever we do, suffer from information overload, along with reluctance to learn something new that may just add to the feeling of overload.

Bricks and mortar business owners tend to start their marketing with whatever they're most familiar with. And that may be Yellow Pages, newspaper advertising, flyers, postcards - with online stuff put off for when they have time... which never seems to come.

If you read the main section of this forum, you'll see that there are many people who approach marketing in exactly the opposite way - online only - and sometimes with the same frustrating results!

Ive seen a video by a local internet marketing company in AU that basically went around asking people on the street about their Google usage vs Yellow Pages. It was really straight to the point and very eye opening. Mabey you could put together a video of something similar asking people how they find local businesses, restaurants, dentists, hair salons ect. Then use it on your site, or in emails going out to potential clients. Business owners cant argue with the facts when they see them with their own two eyes
