Sub-domains for geo targeting leasing sites?

Is anyone using subdomains for sites they plan to just lease?

I'm thinking if I'm controlling all the sites, why not just subdomain them all instead of buying a bazillion domains?

So I could buy "inmycity.com" and have hairstyling.inmycity.com or Cindyshairsalon.inmycity.com

Anyone think this is too general?

I don't think its too general - I think personally it's a good idea and have done it with some sites (it does work).

I know that some balk at ranking a subdomain, but I've found that subdomains DO rank if you have the right words IN the subdomain name.

What you're doing is creating almost an "authority" site by having "inmycity.com" to a point - and the engines like that, at least from what I've seen. (Hint: Link them together somehow, even by a sitemap or on the main page of the site).

    Just my thoughts/experiences.

Yes you can, creating sub-domain name under primary domain name is a normal thing. For this use your hosting control panel. So you can set up a new site with the sub-domain name. However just make sure you place it under the proper category. If you face any trouble while doing this immediately contact your web host for further details.

I don't think Jill was asking how to create a domain name, rather if it is good for local seo.

@Jill - i don't see why it would not work. The domain name is only a small part of seo and as long as everything else stacks up you will be good to go.

There was a warrior who ranked on GP before the big algo changes with subdomains with the type of idea you suggest.

If you would like to build entire new site with its primary domain interest, using sub-domains is a quit good idea. But make sure you do not use same content on sub domains, because search engines
treated sub-domains as a separate websites.

While practically speaking it will work I think it's a bad idea for your potential customers in the long run. If ALL you ever plan on doing is renting sites then OK. But if you want to sell sites then having them on a subdomain will become a bad idea.

Now personally speaking I prefer to use real domains, not subdomains. Domains are cheap. If you are not confident in the success of the site then you're in the wrong biz ;-) But yes, having a bunch of domains is a real pain sometimes!

Sub domains are "real" domains btw.

Well, I'm thinking to sell off more personalized sites as an upsell or separate package.

I'm moving to a new area this next week - new state.

Up till now I've been doing sites for specific businesses. They already have domains. They use their company branding for the names of their websites.

I'm working up my plan for attack in this new city, which seems to not have the income that other places I've lived in have.

There is some local SEO going on already as I've been poking around with general searches like "city name plumber" and low and behold "citynameplumber.com" has been taken and a business is on there.

So, I can start with a directory of sorts, and was thinking about one subdomain for each category, and then seek out who wants to benefit from the site - leasing it so I can create a continuity program and then offer the second option of doing their own separate sites.

Once a separate site has been done, the content can be moved and a fresh leasing prospect could be flipped into the space.

I think this is a good idea. I am probably going to go this route myself.
It is much easier to create a subdomain and market it and test it. If you find that niche to be very profitable, then you can quickly make its own domain. I like the idea myself.

Make 1 directory and then just create subs for each niche. Makes things a bit easier. If you had to, you could create a new domain, just for the guy renting the site from you, ie. Houstonspraytans.com and then just redirect it to the subdomain you own. The guy advertises his new site (Houstonspraytans.com) and it goes to the subdomain you have for him capturing all kinds of leads.

Not to mention you are still promoting the original subdomain to keep it ranked as well for people using google.

Just another side of your idea.

        Tommy

ps. I already registered all kinds of domains with my city in them relating to services around town. I can tell you it is a huge bonus if I already have the business name and service keywords in the domain. Makes your seo job a bit easier, BUT still need to do onsite and offsite seo.

this is a great concept and one that has been done before...

I like it a lot. I just have never taken the action to do it myself.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor.
