How to get google to recognise your home page

Hi guys - I'm putting this in offline marketing because I am doing some business for a company and they have a minor issue (not even related to the service I provide for them).

When people google many of the terms that take them to their site, what shows up on the results is not where they want their customers to land... in fact, it's usually a direct link to a specific products manual (in PDF format) which in all cases causes the potential client to end up somewhere else.

Now this is the #2 result on a very high traffic keyword on google, and they don't know how to fix it.

I don't either. But I figure that some of you offline consulters like myself will have come across a similar problem. I've tried google but I just don't think I am hitting the right terms to get the result I'm after.

Thanks in advance warriors,
Bane

First thing I would try is to create two new pages, one would be a product manual page without Goog analytics or any other stat script, and put the manual(s) there. Then leave the link to the new page there, using the title of the manual with a .pdf in the title (so that people can still get to the manual- not a dead end).

The second page would be the exact original page url, even though it doesn't have a .pdf that downloads automatically. ... like www yoursite com / partsmanual.pdf

Then I would add a redirect option from the second page to the preferred landing page that wouldn't kick in for say 10 seconds or more. But that page has all the relevant navigation links to preferred pages to lead a searcher to where the company would want them to go.

Not much of a webmaster, but getting the page on goog to take them to the landing page might work, given a little time.

As an afterthought, the stats data should give you a real good idea of why that page ranks so high. Look at the referrer url which has any search engine url. look at the search terms in that url. Thats the first stop in researching the 'why' of that page/.pdf rankling so high.

fwiw, republishing parts manuals, service manuals are a big biz on the web. plagiarism issues don't bother people I guess.

Hope that is helpful enough to jog an idea for you.

    Happy Thanksgiving.
