Google place page and local search

Are google place pages guaranteed to be on page1 - if so how does that impact being able to optimize a local search page for local businesses to rank on page1 -example

when i run a search for alarm system houston - the top 8 spots are google places - when i run a search for "alarm system houston" - exact match - there are no google places listings.

I assume exact match brings back sites that are optimized to rank on page 1

since people do not search typically with exact match - can i successfully rank on page1 if google places has most of the top results.

certainly you can ! there are still front page spots even with the places listings AND you can always make your own places listing and have more than one spot on thatfront page.

As with any Google update, there will be certain types of high trust merit based links that will not be affected whatsoever. Google’s new Place Search does not suddenly make links earned by merit somehow have less merit

As long as your link seeking targets were chosen based on their ability to build credibility, brand and/or click traffic, nothing changes. The links you needed before are still needed now, unless you were just chasing rank via link building, in which case I strongly suggest you change your linking strategies.
