Google Local Places Take Over The Whole Page

Google results shows a full page of Local Places results for Boston Personal Injury Lawyer.

    This started happening October 30th, it's pretty much killed certain long tail strategies for websites that are multi city and state.

    Notice the #1 spot - a sponsored ad. It/he has fewer reviews than the 3rd down. So it looks like Google is (obviously) favoring the ones who PAY.

    Yeah I have been worried for a long time that Google will begin essentially "favoring" the big guys with the big $$$ with all of their new rollouts. If you look at the A slot and C slots, they both nearly have almost 100 citations picked up from a lot of lawyer vertical directories, etc.

    Both slots are missing some key Places optimization strategies though. It seems it is never 100% clear WHY some rank above others in Places, especially in the very competitive niches where most people are doing MOST of the stuff right. I'm just worried TAGS, BOOST, etc will all begin to eat up a lot of local traffic (both organic and PPC) from the "small" guys in the major metros....That....and the fact that when pulling up a first page of local results, many times the whole thing almost looks "SPONSORED" to me. That could just be me though, but in general I am noticing that Google results are feeling a LOT more "commercial" in general as well with all the new changes.

    The Citations and Reviews seem to be driving the results. The days of keyword stuffing are over and its going to take some getting some of those Citations through more than just directories, maybe even some articles/blogs?

      Absolutely correct, citations and reviews play a big part of getting top listings. Tag's we have played around and some clients use them and some don't, but I can say at the moment they play no result in listings.

      The clients that added tags have not climbed to the A spot, after trying tags nor has it made things any easier.

    This stuff was already happening around spring. G was testing it all over back then. We've been positioned for this for a long time and it is making local seo even easier for us to sell now that most major business categories are all switched over.
