Need a good Wordpress theme for a local business directory. Please help.

I've tried DirectoryPress and GeoPlaces, and neither really fit what I'm trying to do. I have a site ranking for a lawyer-related keyword for a specific city and would like to sell listing spots to different law firms. What would be a good looking WP theme to do this with? Thanks.

Basically something similar to GeoPlaces but that functions properly and looks smooth. I'd like each listing to have its own page with contact information and details and the homepage would show different categories with a few listings under each.

Your site says how great this is but shows not 1 example of what its created? Do you have any examples to highlight how unique this is?

          Sure Nelson,

          Here ya go.

Please keep in mind that most of these do not have a parent site. So many of the links may lead to my own affitek.com website or my affitek.com blog.

The designs may not be your preference, but everyone of these samples were made from a single template that was imported into Theme Master.

The templates you choose could be much fancier if you wish. It's just a question of what template you choose to work with.

    John,

I am also using the same method as you and have a local website ranking in the first few spots for a keyword (still working on some other keywords first).

Anyway, I would not recommend you to have multiple advertisements on the one site. IE- I would fine one lawyer, and get his ad on there for $XXXXXX per month, instead of getting 2 or 3 on there.

I think if you have more than one, it begins to look a little unprofessional (just my opinion) and I definitely think the lawyers will kick up a stink when they find out. I especially wouldn't do this with lawyers unless they explicitly know there will be more than just their ad on the site, otherwise they'll get you with some legal jargon you don't even understand.

      Re: Not using multiple advetisements
You can always offer the client both options.
      1) Exclusive advertising site wide for xxxx dollars per month
      2) Non-exclusive advertising for xxx dollars per month.

That's what I am going to try. Just waiting for my new sites to start ranking on page 1

Here is what I am looking for myself - and would love to see an example of what I need to buy.....

I own a website for a niche in a major US city - want to build a directory site for it.

There are many sub niches in this category, so, I was thinking about a map, or a listing, for North, South, East, West Big City - and then, in that list, a break down of all of the different types of micro niches in that category.

Let's say it was New York Surgeons.

I could go to this website, NewYorkSurgeons and click on "Lower East Side" and then break it down to Cardiologists - but, have every one on there, paying a monthly rate of $30 a month or something.

        Any thoughts?

I've tried WooThemes - CityGuide. It works, but is not easy enough to modify. I think your best off creating a semi-custom theme off of a flexible framework to fit your needs.

I actually own a license to GEO places and its biggest problem is that they do not use custom post taxonomies for the business categories but instead use the native blog categories which can seem confusing when trying to access your blog posts and keep thing seperate (This could easily be done and I'm not sure why they don't change it as I've written to them about it).

In my humble opinion there isn't a great solution out there.

Again, I use GEO Places but am highly considering developing something for myself.

Hey John - just how many lawyers are you talking about selling advertising to? If it's just a few, you could do a lot with the default 2010 theme that comes with word press, or you could buy something a bit prettier from theme forest for $30 - $40.

Personally though, I'd have to say I agree with krzysiek that it might be better to just rent it or sell advertising on it to just one Lawyer, and if you offered it to the highest bidder you could probably get top dollar for it.

Wow Quentin - As someone who's looked at just about every script/wp theme for a a large scale business directory site over the years, I have to compliment you on a fantastic job there!

Don't want you to give away any trade secrets or anything, but I'd love to know more if you could share the theme you used and how you modified it.

      Cheers,

I also have been looking for a good business directory theme. So far I have purchased Geo Places, DirectoryPress, and ClassiPress.

None of them really did the job. ClassiPress was the worst by far. I even contacted them within 24 hours to ask for a refund and they told me to read the TOS - NO REFUNDS. How's that for some great customer service?

So... I am now trying out WooThemes "Listings". They let you actually load the theme on a "playground" so you can decide BEFORE you buy if it fits. I will let you know!

I could advice you AppTheme guys, they had some god WP scripts for that BUT unfortunately they decided to update their scripts with a new URL format:

    Old form: sitename.com/postname
    New form: sitename.com/ads/postname

Ads can be replaced by whatever word you want, problem is, you have to put ONE word in there - how stupid is that, if I can ask...

These guys are shooting their own business, so I won't advice them in any way, otherwise, as me, you can find yourself scratching the head asking WHY they did what they did to awesome scripts... and to existing top rankings sites.

    EDIT:

Just noticed site above uses the script I was talking about, but since it's not updated, you can't see the new URL structure.

I could not agree more. They really messed up a good thing. I wish I didn't start with the new version, but I have already put a lot of time and money into it.

I don't know what I would use otherwise really. I wasn't too impressed with DirectoryPress, but I would advise it over the AppThemes ClassiPress for sure.

I am putting about $600 of development costs into a $69 theme. If that sounds like a happy experience you would like to duplicate, by all means, buy ClassiPress. I would suggest otherwise.

Sorry, didn't realize this thread had become so popular. Still haven't really decided on a definite but right now GeoPlaces is up which, after some modification, looks pretty clean and professional. Whether or not a particular theme has a payment processor built in is unimportant to me as I'll be collecting payment by alternative means, so I'm still basically just looking for a good-looking theme.

I just bought GeoPlaces and I like it alot. I put it up here Ruidoso 411 and I'm pretty happy, it's clean it, functions well, has tons of features and decent support. It is not cheap but the support is worth the price.

Thanks. I'm putting a lot into this site and it is a perfect platform to approach business owners for listings and networking.

A few SEO plug ins and it is doing well in the search engines. Oddly enough Yahoo and Bing are giving me great respect while Google seems to care less. Most of my visitors are from Yahoo/Bing which is fine with me. I'm a bit tired of Google being so fickle.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to this thread until now, folks.

For those of you who were following this, here's what happened. I never did end up with a good local directory that fit my liking, after trying quite a few. I hired a programmer to mold and shape GeoPlaces as much as possible to fit my needs and wants but it just couldn't be done while maintaining the theme's functionality. Consequently, I ended up changing to a "rent-the-site" type business model where the client basically gets to put their contact info up on the homepage, and for that I'm using Scott Blanchard's new BizLocal theme package. It looks and works great. Check it out.

I've been building websites for clients, "renting" sites to local businesses, and selling ad space to local businesses for a while now.

Scott Blanchard's new BizLocal offline theme package is great. I have finally found something that has filled the void I've had for years created by the need for a simple, functional, professional-looking, easy-to-work-with, impressive WP theme to use for offline business sites.

When I first checked out the preview a few months back, I knew I had to have it. I must have emailed Scott 10 times every few days asking when it was going to be released. I picked it up on the first day of the early bird special for current Clickbump members, and have loved it since.

Also, for help with finding good localized keywords to rank for that the Google Adwords Keyword Tool is actually hiding from you, I'd highly recommend checking out Keyword Sniper Pro 2.0 from Jack Duncan. It has been invaluable for me. I wrote a personal review of it which you can find in my sig.

I can't praise these tools enough. Clickbump Engine, BizLocal, and KSP have literally changed my business, my income, and my life forever.

      Hi!
Is it possible to see an example of one of your "rent a site" sites? Is it a one customer per site model & what do you charge to rent out the site?
      regards

Great thread with a lot of excellent responses and suggestions.

I'm curious though, what do you guys consider good features/functions for this kind of theme. From the few I looked at, they were very similar.

If I wanted to setup a directory theme, what elements would make it stand out? I dont have a directory site but I wouldn't mind giving it a go

Appthemes are in the process of developing a fully fledged business directory called Vantage.

Their classipress theme looks amazing for classified listings and has a payment built into it.

Just put an ETA request into them today.

You can use Woo Themes Listing Theme, but it's kinda costly. If you need something more customized theme, I would say get a custom theme developed for a wordpress theme developer. This will ensure that you have the best theme look, features and all the functionality you are looking for.

For anyone who is still considering setting up a local business directory - here's a post I wrote to help you choose the best one. I compare the top four directory themes in the industry that are specifically created for local businesses:
