Mobisitegalore vs Wptouch pro?

I think it would be an easy offline upgrade.

Just say to client..Your site looks like this on a mobile phone..
test i phone.com and it could look like this...using mobile galore or wp touch.

I think with wp touch and the plugin keeping existing domains would be easier than mobi galore site and .mobi change.

I guess it would matter about the complexity of a site.. but most offline sites should be simple landing page with contact info.

I should give credit to Maria Gudelis. She mentions this method in a video with wp touch pro.

I've tried them both and they're nice, but each has their pros and cons.

WPtouch is great and works best if someone is already using wordpress or you get the initial web design job and use WP and upsell them on the mobile site too.

When I tried mobisitegalore a few months back I wasn't crazy about the look of their mobile sites, but it looks like they've added some templates and have improved the look of things. However now you apparently have to contact them for reseller or white label pricing, and that makes me think they've raised their pricing from the $100/month plan they had previously.

Right now my favorite builder is from the dot mobi folks goMobi which costs about $6 a month per website from a reseller like name.com and produces more of a "smart phone app" look with icons for navigation instead of just plan text links.

As with most things online, I say try 'em all yourself and see which works best for your needs.

I'm not sure if this is directly related to the OP's question, but I was interested to discover that eNom has recently introduced an interesting looking new mobile option:

Announcing goMobi: the Easy Content Mobilization Service
    Published on 10/13/2010

eNom Partners with dotMobi to Offer Resellers an Easy Content Mobilization Service

Quick and easy service transforms any domain name website to a mobile web page for just $4.99 per month

BELLEVUE, Wash. – October 13, 2010 – eNom, Inc., the world’s largest ICANN accredited domain name wholesaler, owned by Demand Media™, today announced that it will be the first major wholesale registrar to offer the goMobi service to its resellers. The service enables existing small business web site owners to easily get their business on the mobile web by taking the core elements of the business’ existing web site – logo, contact us, map, coupons – and rendering that information neatly on a cell phone device. The goMobi service will be available to eNom resellers at just $4.99 per month, as of October 13, 2010 date.

goMobi, the world’s first content mobilization platform was launched in June 2010 by dotMobi the .Mobi domain registry. In short, the goMobi service makes building a mobile friendly site and reaching the increasing number of consumers that use mobile devices to browse the web, quicker and easier than ever before. In addition, the goMobi service will also serve as a vehicle for business owners to promote their social media destinations such Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

“The goMobi service is a perfect match for eNom’s network of resellers; easy enough for use by small business customers, yet sophisticated enough for web designers creating mobile sites for the biggest of brands,” said Chris Sheridan, vice president of Sales for eNom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Demand Media “We’re excited to work closely with dotMobi to offer this service and to assist domain name owners in building a successful presence on the mobile web.”

Hey Val - that's the gomobi service I mentioned, just offered by another reseller. At first name.com was the only reseller in the states, but now enom and a few others are online and a few more are in the works according to goMobi

It'd be nice to be a private label reseller like eNom and these others, but I haven't asked as I'd imagine there's a bit of investment involved to partner with the gomobi folks in this way.

      Thanks for posting that!

GoMobi looks really great and I'd consider using it, but two things bother me
          after reading their FAQ:

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can I remove the product branding in the footer?
          No.

goMobi can provide automatic redirection of mobile users from your business site to your goMobi site, so they are guaranteed a good experience. This more advanced capability requires a designer to embed the provided functionality into your business website.
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

So it seems they will advertise themselves on pages you build for your clients.
And also, it will not automatically detect if one is on a mobile phone and re-direct
          to the gomobi site.

Does anyone have any comments or ideas about the above point?

          Thanks,

            Hey Angela,

You know this bothered me too at first but once I looked into it more I'm not so concerned about either issue now.

The footer link for example goes to Welcome to dotMobi | dotMobi - a very general site with all kinds of .mobi development info. It's not connected to whoever you purchased the service from and I someone would have to spend a bit of time poking around to get to the gomobi site, find the available resellers and then go to their websites to find out what they resell the service for. Yes, I would rather the site have MY link in the footer, but I don't see this as a deal breaker at all.

In regards to the redirection to the mobile site, to start you could use a subdomain like m.domain.com and point that to the mobile site, and all this "This more advanced capability requires a designer to embed the provided functionality into your business website" means to me, is that you'll need to insert a few lines of code into the primary webpage to have it redirected properly.

I need to find out what exactly that is and try it myself, but I can't see that being any more difficult than inserting Google analytics code on a webpage.

            Cheers,

            Steve

What I like about GoMobi is the smartphone interface with the apps.

But what I like about MobisiteGalore is that they have no ads and
also they automatically re-direct any mobile traffic without any
              additional coding being needed.

I would imagine that the bit of code they are talking about inserting into you web site is a java script to detect when a mobile phone is being used and redirect to the gomobi site.

    Angela,

I've looked all over that goMobi site and didn't find any info on the technology side of their service.

The problem with goMobi is you're going to have to ask every offline client to register and promote a .mobi website. That's a hassle. Even on my iPhone I have Yahoo! set to my home page and it automatically gives me the mobile version. I look in the iPhone web browser and can see the domain is m.yahoo.com. Now, if I want the desktop version of Yahoo! they have a link at the bottom I can click on.

It's hard enough to bag an offline client. Now, we're supposed to "confuse" the potential customer by asking them to promote their .com and .mobi domain in all of their marketing? Tough sell in my opinion.

      Hi Dennis,

One could register a .mobi site for the client and submit it.

The idea is that when a mobile user is searching on their
phone for a contact number, directions, etc, if the site
is not mobile friendly, is is slow loading and a real pain.

Or am I missing your point?

      Kind Regards,

I just searched the FAQ section of the GoMobi website and found this:

How will people actually get to my site?

There are four ways by which users can reach your site.

The easiest way is to promote the site to your customers.
For example, using goMobi you can send links via text message for your goMobi site to your customers' mobile phones so they always have your information in hand.

The second way is via search. Users on mobile devices increasingly see mobile sites returned in search results, so goMobi sites will increase your business's visibility to mobile users.

Third, add a link on your desktop website to your goMobi site. This will help increase awareness that the mobile site is available. This functionality is offered as part of the goMobi package, and can be easily put in place by the designer of your desktop website.

Fourth, goMobi can provide automatic redirection of mobile users from your business site to your goMobi site, so they are guaranteed a good experience. This more advanced capability requires a designer to embed the provided functionality into your business website.

Here is the link where you can find it,
      goMobi.

I have made several mobile sites. I've used MobiSiteGalore and Wordpress Mobile Pack. I prefer Wordpress Mobile Pack. I put a special code in the .htaccess file of the main website and it automatically directs mobile traffic to the .mobi site. So far, my clients love it. With using Wordpress Mobile Pack it makes it look more like a regular website instead of the weird look from MobiSiteGalore (IMHO).

I haven't checked out the WPTouch or GoMobi yet, but plan on it soon!

    Hi Angela,

Yes, I have a .mobi domain too but never bothered building it out. The problem is the customer is NOT going to remember to go to the .mobi site when using their smart phone. People will simply go to the .com name instead.

Unless there's software that can detect you're on a smart phone then you'll get the default .com home page.

      Hi Dennis,

Yes, that is exactly the point I am making.

There IS software that identifies if a user is on a mobile phone
and when a .com address is typed in from a mobile device, they
are automatically directed to the .mobi site. This happens without
them even knowing a .mobi exists.

      Kind Regards,

I've spent the past few months checking out WPTouch, MobileSiteGalore, GoMobi, etc after I received a bunch of requests for mobile site building services from some of my offline small business clients.

While I personally love WPTouch, most offline clients that I get already have websites and they are not in Wordpress.

MobileSiteGalore has some very well written mobile pages, and they have improved their templates, however for ease of use, speedy setup and a more 'professional' feel I have chosen to use GoMobi.

If you are using GoMobi as well, just make sure you check out all of the partner monthly prices first - there is quite a gap

Steve: From what I can see (and I just took a quick peek) it costs $20 a month for an eNom Resellers Account. Once you have an account you can sell all the products offered by eNom, including goMobi.

If this link works for you (I was logged in when I accessed this page, so I'm not sure if the link will work for others. However, it's free to register an account with eNom and you can take a good look at all they have to offer, and they certainly do have a lot of options for resellers!)

eNom - domain name, web site hosting, email, registration

If that link works, click on the tab that says 'Sell High Margin Products.'

It looks like you can also purchase these services for your clients under 'Manage Direct' where it says 'Purchase Directly for your Customers.' It's the only box that doesn't have a 'Learn More' link. (Sigh)

You can use an existing domain with eNom to set up a dedicated reseller account/website, or you can register a new domain and set up a dedicated site for the products you want to resell. It looks like quite an impressive option. I've been considering this option but have to take time to thoroughly sift through all the info when I have a few minutes to spare.

Use the API catalog to build your site. Choose what you want to sell.
Make money selling 50+ Enom high margin products.
Hope this post makes sense. I'm typing in a hurry as I have an appointment to keep, and as usual, it's far more interesting to visit the Warrior Forum than to get on with essential business!

Hey Val - thanks much for your comments! Perfect timing as I've been researching eNom since they were mentioned here and I can see I need to talk to them about their reseller options.

From the looks of it their Instant Reseller would allow me to not only sell and design a mobile website for someone, but then I could give them the option to login and make updates to the site themselves over time. Or the do-it-yourselfer could bypass me altogether and design and host their own site, mobile or otherwise.

Thanks again for the details and to all who have shared their ideas here!

      Steve

      P.S. Aint that the truth!

        Hi All,

I have read this post with interest and i hope i can give you some answers to mobile websites.

I have been an investor in .mobi since its launch and have tried many mobile templates.

I have tried wordpress using wptouch plugin, dotmobi's plugin and wpTap plugin.

I have used the WpTap plugin and wptouch plugin used together on my Aberystwyth.mobi website with success. You will need to use an iphone as well as a low end phone to see the differing results from the domain name.

I have also built mobile sites from scratch, takes up to much time as far as i am concerned. Just.mobi a mobile search portal.

I have have also used the goMobi product, i do like this very much but other mobi enthusiasts aren't so enthusiastic

Gomobi launched a mobile contest in 2010. I was pleased to find that i was the winner of the competition, the prizes were and iPad and 100 goMobi products.
The gomobi product really suits me as i sell the product to end users, my webite for this is www(dot)Convert2.mobi

You can suppress the gomobi branding as you can see here on Snowboards.mobi, this is the site that won the gomobi competition.

Any questions about mobile please feel free to ask.

Anyone have any experience with OpenSRS?

I just saw today that they've recently become a reseller for dotmobi and offer it at a wholesale cost of $2.50/month to their resellers. Signing up for a reseller costs a one time $95 fee and as this is the lowest cost I've seen anyone offer the dotmobi builder for I'm seriously considering signing up with them.

          Hi Guys

Have started developing mobile sites for customers and have used mobisite galore a few times.

It then suddenly tweaked on me that when you use these '3rd party' mobile templates you may be potentially opening a can of worms.

          Let me explain further.

Ok lets assume that you sign up to mobisitegalores $25 buck per month package. Great (you might say) plenty of templates to choose from AND THEN you have to HOST with them. Same for GoMobi.

To me that's a BIG No No. You should control as much of this side of things as possible.

Now, consider this I have an offline consulting business. What if, you have 50, maybe more customer sites being hosted and say they go broke (I'm not suggesting in any way that they will) BUT what you have done is created leakage in your business. Or even worse say YOU go broke and can't pay your monthly fee? Hmmm could be a case for some legal suits!

It may be more hassle using a wordpress theme/template BUT you have more control.

You should also remember that it is fairly straightforward to have a mobile redirect set up.

Maybe I'm being paranoid but I can see potential problems later on by using hosted mobile sites so you're better off with Wptouch pro.

Bottom line is it seems to be OK if it's for your own use but think again if it's for your clients!

            Hi Peter,

Others please correct me I'm wrong, but are you not perhaps being over cautious?

Even if you put your mobile sites on WordPress you still have to host them somewhere.
So using your argument, one could then ask... what if Hostgator went broke!

              Peter
              Peter,

When you stop paying the monthly mobisitegalore fee your self-hosted mobisitegalore sites will keep working fine. You'll just lose the ability of going back and doing revisions to them. If you're having them host the mobile sites you're selling to your clients and a client stops paying, well only their site should be affected, not all the ones under your account. So this shouldn't really be a problem really.

Though, the more control you have over the sites the better.

Others please correct me I'm wrong, but are you not perhaps being over cautious?

Even if you put your mobile sites on WordPress you still have to host them somewhere.
So using your argument, one could then ask... what if Hostgator went broke!

              Angela
Yep, hosting them yourself you'll still have to worry about making that monthly hosting bill, but if your clients are paying every month it shouldn't be a problem to keep their sites up.

My problem with gomobi - the sites you build will all look very similar to each other. Does anyone feel a problem with that?

I have not tried the wp plug-in, can anyone tell me if it provides a way to install the "driving direction" and "click to call" button?

    Thanks.

Hi All, sorry for the delay in getting back to all of you.

      Re: Branding,

Once you buy the gomobi product go to your control panel, scroll down to advanced, open up advanced tab and click on supress branding and your all done.

@ Steve Solem, I have just become a reseller with openSRS, i'm just waiting for my goMobi products to be loaded into my account.

I'm curious as to what's the difference between offering goMobi via Name, eNom and Open SRS? Insight appreciated!

Hey, good deal there! Can I ask, when you get your reseller account with them, do they give you a replicated website you can sell from or links to send your prospects to - or can you just create new accounts that you get billed for that you then bill your clients for?

Main difference I've seen is price - with name running around $7/mo per account, enom's a little cheaper I think and open SRS the cheapest at $2.50/acct/month. From what I've seen I think OpenSRS give you access to a few more marketing materials to promote the GoMobi system.

          Cheers,

          Steve

            Steve,
Did you sign up for goMobi with OpenSRS? If so, what are your thoughts after using it?

I have a simple WordPress site and I just installed WPTouch on it (non-pro) and I must say, it did produce a neat looking site. Although, it would require some further modification which the pro version probably provides.

I think I have also seen some 'mobile website' themes for WordPress specifically, and there are some plugins that will auto redirect your visitor to another theme/URL if they are on a mobile browser. So you could just set up another install of WP on www.m.domain.com and use the mobile WordPress theme there, and then install the plugin on your main WP install and get it to redirect mobiles to that theme specifically made for mobiles.

Anyway, for WordPress - it is not a bad idea and I will be playing around with it too, to see what type of results I can get.

Yeah ... just checked out Wptouch pro and it looks very promising. Haven't used it yet, but I'm going to give it a try.

Why won't you outsource the design for cheap and keep all future profits? Focus on selling the mobile website to business owners, to your friends etc, that's the hardest part of the equation.
Someone said in a previous thread: "the sites you build will all look very similar to each other" this means Very Poor Quality.
Why not try custom websites.Build the websites in away a customer has the same "Home" feeling as he has when he visits the main website. Build the mobile website to fit the main website.
I'm building mobile websites every day and i can tell you that clean & good looking custom mobile website sells for more than template based ones and they give the best value to your clients.

Got to agree with this. After looking over template based services, they are cheesy looking in comparison to building a custom site for each customer. It's not difficult to build them custom and the customer doesn't get a cookie cutter site that looks like all the others.

I had a few clients on Gomobi until last year or early this year their site could only be seen with the gomobi extension.

They were not overly happy and that's when I changed and started my own service.
