Would you buy this 800 number that is potentially worth thousands?

Hi Warriors,

I know a business that was doing well and the owner shut it down overnight. Now the interesting thing is, he would charge an incredible amount of money per client. Other such businesses in the area charge as much if not more for the same services.

Now the cool thing is their 800 number is available for purchase and their site is still online and still ranking very well.

Now I would buy this in a heartbeat and either sell it to a ''used-to-be'' competitor of his or take control of it and sell the leads while tracking the calls... i.e. get $XXX a lead I send their way.

The problem is the following:

The owner is in trouble with the law, and past clients are pooling their resources for a class action lawsuit against this man. There is bad press against his old business.

Would you move ahead with something like this or do you think that the competitors wouldn't want anything to do with this number? Or perhaps I could charge less per lead since there are bound to be calls that are not potential clients (angry past clients, media, etc.)

I respect your advice. Thank you so much for your help.

Gabriel

I would stay clear from this 800 number.
Either that or deal with other frustrated clients of this guy's past, who have yet to join the class action lawsuit.

Buy his website and his 800 number. 301 his website to a newly created, newly branded website. You'll get his website power, without his branding. You'll get the 800 number that brand itself.

if he has bad press and all I don't see why you would want the number/website to be honest with you. Seems like a diaster waiting to happen.

It's not hard to rank for local keywords, so I would just create a new site and outrank every one.
