Offline Marketing Strategy

Hey everyone,

My name is William Tha Great, here from Houston, Texas.

I have a offline marketing plan I was going to start adding into my regular marketing schedule. I was hoping for it to increase my local fan base over a period of time. My overall goal is to increase my fan base locally. I hope to have my main fan base in my city that would be great!

My basic strategy is to make detailed flyers, and put them in peoples mailboxes in the neighborhoods around mines. I figure if I make really eye catching flyers people should take notice, because everyone checks their mailboxes. I think that would be a great way for me to expand locally.

What are your thoughts about this strategy?

Hope to hear from you!

God bless,
William Veasley

    This is a federal crime.

United States Code: Title 18,1725. Postage unpaid on deposited mail matter | LII / Legal Information Institute

Getting fined is a bad way to start off the year...

If you want to distribute flyers, you'll have to put them on people's doors or something besides a mailbox unless you pay for postage.

Postal law aside, why not just try it?

Spend 1 day doing it, and see if its worth your time.

If it is, higher some kid with a bike to do it for you for $6/hour. Offer to up it to $8 if you can actually drive around the neighborhood as soon as he's done and see that the signs are everywhere he says they are.

Nothing like incentivising performance (except that i can't spell the word "incentivizing"...)

        WHAT?!

This is horrible advice. You can't just put the law aside and try it. Are YOU going to bail him out of jail if he gets caught? Doubt it.

Anyway, walking around putting flyers on people's doors is a waste of time imo. You are supposed to be a marketing expert and this is how you plan on getting business??

You're better off just walking around and going into businesses and talking to business owners. That's where business owners are. Much better finding them there then just blasting flyers out in your neighborhood, don't you think?

        This is complete garbage.

While you're inducing someone to commit a federal crime, why not just hire some kid to walk into a bank and hold up the teller at gunpoint for you for a cut of the loot?

It really doesn't matter what anyone "thinks" about any strategy cause until you try it, you won't know if it works for you (your market) or not. Right message? Right audience? Right time?

Try it. Test your message and your response rate. Tweak and try it again.

You can put them on people's doors, IN people's newspaper boxes OR on the flag but not IN the box itself. (i am not an attorney and this is not legal advice )

    ileneg

Of course you can always "do" direct postal mail and then there's no issue w/legally putting a flyer in people's mailboxes.

if it's grey area in law don't push it... because you'd be looking for trouble.

I study law and so many times you get cocky people with the "oh you wont get caught" and you might not get caught, but if you do get caught cop it sweet... nothing shuts someone up real quick as fast things going wrong.

Keep it legit and ethical, there's always another way just find what works and hit it.

What I did was create a targeted Facebook camaign.
Facebook allows you to create ads that will only be seen by your demographics.
Create an ad that says, "Attention Business Owners! Would you like to increase your customer base? If so, become a Fan today!"

I get about an 80% Sign-Up/Like Response... Meaning 4 out of 5 people that click my ad, become a fan of my Facebook Page

Of course, this is just one small part of my marketing methods. Hope this helps.

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the awesome replys!

You guys are right I didn't think about that but it is a crime. Well I guess I have to take another route. I like the facebook idea that might work out pretty well for me. I'm thinking I will still make the flyers just put them on peoples front doors that allow soliciting. I also like the idea of finding somebody else to help me get my flyers out that will be a good test to see how effective it can potentially be.

    Thanks again!

    God bless,

Putting out flyers can be an inexpensive way to test market your products/services. Do NOT put anything in mailboxes. It is illegal and a Federal crime.

What I have done is hire some kids to put door hangar type flyers in targeted neighborhoods and businesses. If there was an acceptable response, then I'd either flood the area with mail or send out some of my door to door sales people to the neighborhood.

A challenge with flyers - beyond the fact that they are illegal on mailboxes, is that most people think of flyers as a marketing method for low cost services. Even if you score a new customer, good luck selling them on a $500-1000 monthly price point.

Try not to put too much detail on the flyers. You want to intrigue them enough to visit your website or come in your shop. If you tell them everything then there is no need to look.

You want to market b2b offline services in residential mailboxes?

Ooops, back to the ole drawing board. Inherent flaw in that plan.

Maybe I misunderstand what you are selling though.

Yes - I get the same feeling.

William, my advice here is to take the flyer content, and repurpose it in another medium. Maybe create a squeeze page that you use Facebook ads to drive traffic to. Almost anything will be better for you than paper flyers. Legalities aside, this is not going to pull the way you want it.

The OP is trying to increase his fan base locally, and on the cheap, presumeably for Facebook. Most people do have internet access, so this actually may not be a bad idea, except for putting the flyers in mailboxes, LOL!

Products with mass appeal still actually do quite well with this method when not readily available locally. A well-designed door hangar targeting a limited geographical area may actually be more cost-effective than a similar online campaign. We often do get very surprised with some of our results in market testing.

    Hey Everyone,

Thanks so much for all the awesome replys!

I know it will be a good idea for me to hire someone to do it for me. I think before I hired someone I would do it myself. If I got a okay response then that is when I would hire somebody. The point is because then I would know it was worth me taking the time to hire someone for their services.

I have been developing the layout of my flyer for quite some time nice. I really want it to go spread like a wildfire. What I'm trying to focus on is giving them just enough information to get excited, but not enough to give anything away. I was thinking of putting my gravatar somewhere on the flyer. I thunk that would make sense right?

    Thanks everyone again!

    Wish you all the best!

    God bless,

      Hi William,

Personally I think you should try it. Instead of a flyer, though, make it into a two or three color doorhangar. And hang it on doors. You can get them professionally printed at www.door-hangers-direct.com (not an affiliate link - just a customer) If you get say 2 or 3 fans out of 2,000 you've got a winner, and just tweak it a bit and test ... test ... test.

      Regards,
      Paul Uhl
