Changing your site in Google places...

Hey

I am currently considering changing the site that is associated with a Google Places listing.

The new site will be a blog with the Google places telephone number and address on most of the blog posts and pages.

Is this just a matter of changing the website that is in the Google Places profile?

    Yes and No!

What I recommend you do, is just redesign the existing website.
This way you are still using the domain name.

However, if you are no where to be found on Google Places.... change a way!

      Hi vndnbrgj

      Thanks for the reply

I am also changing the url as the blog will be on a new url with local town and my 'buying keyword' in it.

So that's the main reason I want to edit the url in the Google Places profile i.e. it will be much more seo friendly

So (1) is it just a matter of changing the url in the profile?

PLUS (2) what I also want to know is how this will affect my Google places ranking and my site's ranking for local searches since Google is merging sites with Google places now.

For example if I was on page 1 with a merged Google places and site listing would i fall off the face of the earth if I changed the url in the Google places listing?

Have you had any experience or do you have a view...?

This depends upon what kind of SEO/SEM you have done with the Google Places listing and website already.
If you haven't done a whole lot, it shouldn't be a problem.
Just once you change the Url, get to work letting Google know about the new url by doing a lot of marketing.
If you have done a lot of marketing, I still say consider a re-design.
Otherwise you might have to go back to all those links and edit your url.
        Ugh...
Or you just take all the previous marketing as a loss.
        Ugh...

Also consider a subdomain, or a new domain forwarding to your existing domain.

It will depend on the blog's organic ranking with the old organic algo.
If the current site ranks #4 on organic and the blog ranks on page 3 on organic then your merged listing will probably drop when you change the URL.

So if the new blog's organic ranking is much lower than the current site, I would consider putting some good old fashioned SEO muscle into the blog before switching.

If you don't know what both of your rankings were in the old organic ranking or don't know how to check where you rank today let me know and I'll share a cool too.

          OK No problem 5star.

As far as checking or tracking rank I was going to use Market Samurai for the local listing seeing as its a merged listing now and the keywords are what I'm ranking for rather than just business type. But as i say this was for the site. This doesn't check (I don't think) the Google places ranking though and had seen a thread about a tool that's in beta right now that will soon be an WSO.

What would you recommend as I'm thinking about offering my services for local listings and will want to be able to produce tracking reports for both...??

#1. Yes, it is as simple as changing the URL in your profile.
#2. No one really knows the answer here. In my opinion, having a highly optimized site with strong on-page and external SEO will only help.

The clients of mine who fit this criteria have benefited heavily.

One thing to keep in mind is that external citations may still have the old URL. I would advise fixing those.

            Thanks Magnetoguy,

If you do a lot of localalized SEO / GP, drop me a PM. I'll share a short "cheat sheet" that I use with my company and team. I'm about to start selling it on here as a WSO, but would be more than glad to share with you at no cost.

            Good luck,

            Brian

Yes, the website change will not trigger a reverfication from Google.

I've just posted another reply to this thread and I think your reply answer the second question.

Would you mind having a look and letting me know?

      Thanks
