I'm kinda getting sick of trying to build a web portfolio and decided I would rather spend time building my own sites, selling products. Seems like the competition for amateur web developers is getting more and more competitive. Doesn't help that service prices are constantly declining. As a college student, I don't really have the time I desire to do sites for clients anyways.

I figured I could use my current knowledge and build my own site. Any hard work I do will eventually help me down the road to success. I can work in my spare time, randomly throughout the day. My real question to you is, how did you find your niche? I have been thinking almost all week on what I can sell or promote. I thought about selling all kinds of virtual goods, as well as figuring out a way to possibly sell physical goods from a local manufacturer (or somewhere along those lines).

I've been told to do porn so many times, but it's not something that I really want to get into. What tools and steps did you do to find out a niche that you liked? How long did that take?

edit: can I get this moved to the internet marketing thread? I did not see I was in offline, even though I'm also considering finding a physical good to sell.

Your niche is what you like most, what are your hobbies ? What are you extremely passionate about that you can make money off of.

Example I have a friend who loves hisdodge charger. Now he sells parts for dodge chargers online on forums and with a website that ranks organically for related keywords. For him it's not a job because he loves his car and with others who love their car as well it just seems like play.

    1. You should pick a niche around a hobby - something that you enjoy
    2. go to google adwords keywords tool (type it into gogle to find it).
    3. Go to Clickbank, Amazon or do a search on the internet for the type of product
you are looking for. Example : dog training affiliate programs.
    4. Choose a domain name with the keyword in it from Google Keyword Tool
    5. You will also need hosting and a website. I personally like Wordpress. Hostgator
hosting service makes it easy to upload Wordpress and if you have trouble their
online customer support will help you.
    6. Optimize your site and add plugins. Be sure to fill in the keyword title, meta tags, a description with the keywords and list the keywords on that page. Create or outsource great content, articles.

This looks like a lot but is the basic idea. Use this as a framework and ask questions as you go. Everyone here is a great help !

Hmm well I really enjoy running (as a sport) and traveling. Are there ways I can find out if there is a specific niche in traveling that may interest me and not be over saturated already? How can I find info about a specific niche search queries, number of people who go to these websites, ect?

Obviously I can't do travel as a whole, so by narrowing it down that should really help me get started.
