Google Places (Maps) Question - Biz on Page 7 But...

Searching through Google for restaurants in a nearby city and found one that is on page 7. But, it is owner verified, has a 4 out of 5 start rating, 195 reviews, 5 pictures, address, and url.

Btw, how I found this listing....went into Google Maps and typed in: cityname restaurant. Then just went through them. Again, this business is on page 7.

MY QUESTION - This seems like a business that would be higher up in the rankings with all of the reviews and pics.

Why isn't it? I don't know much about Google Places/Maps...as you can see.

Obviously there are only a few top spots available. But what determines who gets those tops spots? I know the basics like, making sure all contact/address info is correct, including pictures, reviews, getting the biz submitted to many directories ensuring that all of the info is the same in each submission, etc.

What else is there?

    Hi dv8

Check out the actual website and see if they have any quality backlinks.

The two are interlinked in most cases these days and they either may not have a website or it may be poorly SEO'd onpage and poorly offpage.

Not much else we can say without being able to see the business you are talking about.

    regards

It also helps if they have citations, and everything was optimized properly in the listing.
Also, that they are following Google's TOS.

Like B & K said, it's hard to help without seeing the site.

In addition to what the others have suggested, check the site is not made with Flash, as that stops spidering.

Do they have a website as well as a google places listing?

Does the website have high quality content targeted to local keyword phrases?

Does the website have high quality backlinks?

Most important of all in how many places is the business name and physical address listed on related websites and local directories etc etc. (we call these citations).

This may be the most important factor to ranking high in Google Maps.

      Kindest regards,

        Hi Andrew

Yeah thats pretty much where we were heading with our thoughts on the GP listing.

Great to see the Aussies thinking alike.

        All the best

I agree with what Andrew as said, but one of the simplest reasons is that the post /Zip code is not central to your search term. So if there are 10 companies close to the center of the search city they will come in front of one in the outer suburbs not matter how many reviews or citations.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I didn't know website content, backlinks, keywords, etc had an affect on the map listings.

Btw, the site has 3675 backlinks. Not sure of the quality, didn't look into it any further. Site isn't keyword optimized. No flash.

      Hi dv8

The best bet is to pick somebody and run it past them so that you can get a definative answer.

      Hope that makes sense.

        DV8,

Difficult to say without actually viewing it but it sounds as if it is not an optimized listing.

Owner verified means squat if it's not a quality listing.

Also, reviews have very little impact on the rank of the listing. In the case of place pages, "citations" are king!

Your task is to learn what an optimized listing is.

I'm not going to type out all of the details here but there is plenty of info here in the forum for you to figure it out and I am sure others will jump in and supply plenty.

        Regards,

        John

if your place page has a website listed on that page, the website is considered for place page rank.

Also as of late google maps has been cracking down on, place listings that are using keyword phrases for the title tags where Google expects and only wants the name of the business.

They don't have a problem with multiple listings, as long as none of them have keyword phrases in the title tags, if they do all of them will be flagged and removed. Multiple listings won't get multiple matches, where if you have duplicate listings for the same business, only one of them will show up at a time, it wont be possible to have A B C and D etc. They are even looking at the street view maps to verify businesses. They are getting smarter...slowly

Now it looks like Google has changed its mind and has opted to generate the title from the website listed on the place page for the local listings, instead of the business name. They are in the middle of changing them over it looks like
