Tips for newbies in the off-line world

What is your best tip for someone just beginning off-line Internet marketing?

My hope is that people share tips and ideas that are truly critical to the success of becoming an off-line marketer. All too often we want to share our ideas, but not enough that we endanger our own practices. I think that is a fallacy. I believe there are enough clients for everyone and that by sharing each other's ideas we will build beyond what we now consider impossible.

Let me start off with what I consider to be an obvious tip (although extremely relevant)…

Persistence pays. Make sure that any new idea is given enough time to fully mature and realize its potential.

Always carry a business card everywhere you go.

Get mobile and stay as connected as you can wherever you are.

Get pens with your url on them and use them when signing for purchases. Give them away when somebody shows interest.

Talk to everyone. You never know when somebody, even somebody you have never met and had no real reason to talk to, might divulge some valuable information, such as being in the market for a web developer for their business or their boss.

Wear your t-shirt and eat it too. Put your main business and website name on everything you can. T shirts, hats, your car. Use a sharpie on your garage or whatever you have to do, just leave your mark. Nobody was ever remembered by lurking in the shadows and leaving no impression.

I know some will argue that being connected is not necessarily a good thing, but I for one love it and find that it reduces my stress because I don't have to worry about what's going on - I know what's going on.

Go to a Business Mixer or Chamber event, on your white name badge, don't put your name or business. Just put the word "Google" or "Facebook Marketing" You will have people flocking around you wanting to know more. Trust me...it works VERY well....

Some times you just have to take life by the throat and shake a little more out.

Be confident in yourself when working with customers and prospective customers. Remember - even when you feel like you know very little, you know more than 98% of the business owners out there.

That being said, take time to learn as much as you can, and don't just blindly rely on "outsourcers".

While that is absolutely correct, many people often confuse patience with procrastination. Patiently waiting for yourself to do something is not a virtue!

LOL. Good Job. I might just try that one. Got business matters from the chamber in front of me now, but I guess I need to go finally get my own membership.

It's sort of like a drug. You get hooked in and find yourself mising or being late for family events because some client had this or some outsourcer needed that, server down here or wicked sale up there. The more you ignore it the worse the 'withdrawls' the more you feed it the more the problem grows. Trick is you have to do the drug, don't let it do you. By getting connected that doesn't mean giving others full access to your life. Get the right devices to suit your needs so that it's always arms length away but never disturbing your environment. Practice texting without looking at the keys, then you can continue your conversation with the spouse's parents while sorting out your client support issues without looking. lol. Bluetooth is your friend. Remember that technology is your slave, not the other way around. Make it work for you.

I'll leave you with one more. Don't underestimate your friends and family, neighbors and other people that see you or you see regularly. When it comes to the "offliners" sometimes they are very easily impressed, either that or us technically inclined and Internet saavy forget how really cool and new age we are (no matter how many birthday's you've had). Sometimes wasting 15 minutes to show somebody something you see as completely useless and a waste of time, could be just the fuel your local word of mouth viral engine needs. The moment you "WOW" somebody, they want to tell everyone around them because it's cool, if they think it's really cool they want to share it, especially if they know who made it or who's behind it, kind of like if you were friends with somebody famous you grew up with as kids and never see anymore. They call you and say they will be in town next week and in t minus 1 hour the whole city knows that person is coming to town. This is where social networking marketing strategies come from, and why and how social networks work, because they exist offline and have for centuries, they just didn't always put up signs and wear t-shirts advertising them.

The best tip ever.... So many people give up in the last mile of a million mile race.... thats the time to push harder. Dont be the guy that stopped digging 2 feet away from the Gold vein!!!

On the other hand, know when you are kicking a dead horse too... stick with the plan but be willing to tweak and change when something is obviously not working... instead of giving up completely... just because you have a detour doesnt mean you arent still heading toward your destination.

Change what doesnt work, dont throw the baby out with the bath water though! Throw away whats not working or change it...dont throw away the dream itself!

Stay persistent! Yes it pays off, just like everyone has always told you!!!
