Smart way to start getting traffic

Howdy

I am brand new to the forum and was very glad to find such a resource.

I am starting a new website for buying and selling a certain style of historic home.

Until I get my own listings, I want to pull public REST feeds from a classified ads site and post them to my site.

So my question is: Is it a good strategy to put content from another site, and replace it with my own content as I get my own traffic?

Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated.

      I'm certainly not the best answer here, since I am new and still learning, but I think the answer is yes. There are a couple of methods to getting content to your site from others. RSS feeds, which I'm struggling with at the moment is one way. There are also some WordPress plugins which purport to doing this.

      The key, as I understand it, is that this is not new content and therefore google will not rate this as highly. If you were to augment that with backlinks to the newly acquired content that would help.

      Whether this was the info you were looking for I don't know, nor am I 100% sure it will give you the desired results.

    I wouldn't expect much traffic if all you are doing is republishing content that has already been published elsewhere. You might get some, but it probably won't be much.

    So while pulling a feed may give you some content, that by itself isn't what's going to pull traffic. To get traffic, you're going to need SEO (especially links), some social media work, and you're going to need to make your site useful in some way that is different (for example, having some type of functionality that other similar sites don't have, having info that other sites don't have, or having some type of personal interaction that they can't get elsewhere).

    I have a site that has basically the same content as other sites in my niche, but caring about how the info is presented, as well as having functionality that others don't is what keeps visitors coming back.

    This is Google's model, after all. Google has no unique content to speak of. They simply found a way to organize their info in a way that appeals to users.

    When you launch a site, it is best if you could launch it with some content you have written yourself.
    It doesn't have to be much, just a few words, 250 or so, keyword rich. I would recommend that, rather than scraping content off a site.
