What do you "call" yourself? Any interesting titles?

Bonjour Warriors!

I'm just about to create a new batch of business cards to test a new offer I'll be providing prospective clients as a lead-generation method.

However, I'm thinking instead of "Marketing Consultant" that I might put "Profit Specialist," "Marketing Specialist," "Profit Leak Specialist," etc. as my title on the business cards.

I'm curious if anyone else has tried different titles on their business cards, and what kind of inquisitive responses or funny eyebrow-raising looks you have received as a result.

Anyone pushing the barriers of creative marketing out there?

~Dexx

    "Profit Specialist,"
    "Profit Leak Specialist,"

Personally I love the term "profit leak" but i would never use it on a business card
as a title. It has the potential to confuse too many customers.

I think plain and simple title is best followed by a nice short and descriptive tag line.

    For Example,

    Joe Bloggs
    Sales and Marketing Advisor
"We help your Small Business to Grow"

I agree that if you get too creative, you may confuse some people ... or simply make them roll their eyes.

That said, I think it's a worthwhile endeavor to try to come up with something that may be *slightly* different but still makes sense right away and "clicks" right away.

I agree with the others. To me "profit specialist" sounds contrived, phony, or too "salesy". I think people appreciate "down to earth" much more.

I think you're smart to think creatively though. Maybe you can push that boundary through a graphic on the card or a catch phrase or slogan.

Account Excecutive works well even if you're a one person operation. Savvy business owners have seen them all, and no doubt will snicker at some of these made up titles instead of buying.

A bigger issue is what you call your company. Make sure you choose a professional name that communicates trust. Then, use benefit rich headlines and language in your marketing materials.

For testing purposes doesn't really matter what you use.

I agree with those nixing the "Leak" one, though.

Let's us know how it goes.

    "Online Marketing Specialist"
    "Internet Marketing Specialist"

Those will probably get you a few questions, such as "What is Online/internet marketing?" or "What does a online/internet maketing specialist do?"

Any questions that give you the chance to create interest in your services are good.

I have a headline already (one for both front and back), along with an offer I can track.

I'm asking about what people use as titles for themselves, thanks though.

No worries, I'd assume the same thing myself (since most people do stick with the "typical" business card info).

    That's just my personal preference.

Because you already have tracking in place... you may ad another tracker and do some split testing.

    I personally don't use a title anymore.

If I did... it would be "Web Dude".

In a previous life... I use the title... "Difference Maker"

Why? Because I make a difference.

    That's why.

    Now for my opinion....

Creative Director is good... I have used that before... but confusing... I should call you when I need a photo moved. Not when I am looking to confirm a deal.

Account Executive is professional... but salesy... also widely used by most media sales reps.

Internet Specialist I just can't get into. It sounds borderline arrogant... and fake. Not a common position people would understand.

Marketing Consultant is clear and concise. Very good...

Client Relations.... is a nice title if you are looking for a change yet it doesn't limit you in any way.

So... My vote for the initial split test since you are using your business cards as a marketing peice...

    Client Relations
    Marketing Consultant

But I am a big fan of Difference Maker.....

Makes for a good conversation piece.

Clear, to-the-point and different. Potential for confusion is low. This ticks alot of boxes.

But, do not forget your tagline which could include reference to internet marketing.

Most of the marketing and strategies I, and many others, do for businesses have nothing to do with the internet.

Don't always feel the need to put "online" or "internet" in your stuff, as it might pigeon-hole you into a small area of potential business you could be receiving. =)

Same here. Though why not have both titles on the card? Many professions have multiple titles on their cards (it's even required sometimes such as in the financial services industry).

I have two sets of business cards.

The first one has HMFIC for my business title

The other one is more professional.

When people ask what I do I tell them I make small businesses a lot of money and bring in more business.

Hard to fit on a card but people (the smart ones at least), get the point.

I've been using Profit Leaks Detective as a byline for some time on emails and correspondence. Most of my clients are offline and they all know they are not making as much money as they should.
I tie it to tracking the clues to where the profit leaks are.

My cards used to say "Managing Partner" because thats what's under my name on the articles of organization...

I'm getting ready to order a new batch of cards tomorrow and they won't have a title.

Ditch the title, minimize the logo and business name. Small businesses are in too much of a rush to be seen as nameless faceless corporations. Focus on putting yourself at the forefront of the business and don't use a title.

  • You're on the right track Dexx!

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was that your customer doesn't "want" your product - in fact, it's an obstacle between them and the results they want.

People want the result, the outcome, their desire, their problem solved; not a consultant.

In the instance of weight loss, people don't want a book or a training or support - they want the weight off of their body.

So one of the best things you could do is focus your title entirely on the problems they want to solve or what they desire.

Gary Bencivenga, the world famous long form direct response copywriter talked about this in his "100 Seminar". He said that when people used to ask him what he did and he told them that he was a copywriter, they'd think it was copyrighting.

Then when he told them that he wrote advertising they'd start asking if he wrote the ads for the penny savers, he'd have to again explain that it was different.

So, finally he came up with a solution. When people asked him what he did, he started telling them, "You know how all business owners want more business? Well, I help business owners get all the new customers that they want."

    Simple. Clean. To the point.

And if the person was a business owner, naturally, they'd want to know more.
