Newb Question about Google Places

Hello everyone, newbie here with a question.

I'm about to take the plunge into offline and have a few questions. I've found several businesses in my area with GP listings that are unclaimed, not optimized yet are in the top 7. I understand that this is probably due to low competition. What is the benefit I'm offering of claiming and optimizing the listing? Is it just to get them to the A spot and as a result hopefully more business? I want to be able to explain the benefits.

I also want to offer FB fanpages. Any suggestions on a good WSO / where to get everything I need.

Thank you.

Google Places is still relatively new, with only a small percentage of businesses having claimed their listings. Many times a business will show up with high rankings due to the map position of their business in central to the search location.

As other sites claim their listings, post reviews, and citations they will easily pass them up.

Benefit: By offering your services you are assuring the client that they maintain their good places ranking.

Advice: I find it easier to take a client from page 2 and move them to page 1, they see more benefit, you look like a magician, and it is easy to do depending on the competition.

    Hope this helps

I've been interested in offline marketing myself and I like your idea of taking a client from page 2 and then moving them to page 1. That really shows them you know what you are doing and creates some excitement. Brilliant idea jzmoore!

not only can you take them to page one from any of the lower pages, you can almost make the them bullet proof by getting a running start on building citations, etc.... Totally dominate their competition... Make them look like the only choice.

You'll be able to add pictures, video, coupons, links from directories...all of which will help get and keep them to the top. Plus from there, if all goes well, they'll be interested in other services...Fanpages, SEO, design, etc.

Good luck on your offline consulting pursuit.

They may be showing in the 7 box but they are losing out on alot of valuable marketing info by not claiming their listing...

By claiming the listing they can track visitors to the places page...how many click through to their website or how many click on coupons...

Also the demographic info like where the clicks are coming from, what zipcodes, etc.....thats valuable when a small business is targeting their advertising dollar....

Another factor is that by claiming their listing it allows them to respond to those who leave testimonials or reviews (good or bad)....reputation management is a big factor...especially to restaurants & other services industries....

Add this to what others already stated (coupons, pictures, citations, optimized listing, etc...), their competition has no chance to surpass them...

    Good luck,

    ~Ken

Yes - If they are ranking in the top 10 already in Google Places, adding links reviews and pictures will help them increase their rank in Google Places. I hope that you offer them this incentive when looking to take their listing to the next level, more ideas of dominating Google Places is in my sig! Haha...

I just claimed our google places business listing this week. Though I'm still unsure how it works. I haven't been able to do a search where I actually see it. Though stats in google show that others are obviously seeing it.

The google stats mean that it is being seen, search one of your categories + your listed city, scroll through the Places pages, it should come up. If not, add some citations, and reviews (real ones, if you have them - don't make any up).

Check back every 3-4 days, you should see it move up the rankings. Tip: Make sure to fill all image spaces, and add a video - these definitely will help the optimization.

A "claimed" ranking will always rank higher then a "unclaimed" ranking. Also, by Optimizing your clients listing you will be able to blow them to the top of the list VERY quickly (see my sig for a link to my free guide to Optimizing Google Places)

Thanks for the information guys. It was funny that I was able to get my dance school to the top of the listings and didn't know how until after I purchased a GP course and conducted research on this forum.

Now I need to learn to learn to setup sites using WP.

there's no benefit, they're already there. If you charge them for anything, you're scamming them.

I disagree. They may not even know they are there. By telling them they even have an unclaimed listing, knowing HOW to claim it, how to add value to it, is all part of a nice service packet that is worth charging for.

What??? What if the information in the listing is wrong? Wrong phone number or wrong address or wrong url?
What if there are negative reviews?
