Whats my theory gap in analyzing competitions keywords?

Ok...so, I am analyzing an offline clients website. While the site is quite clean and nice, its SEO is horrible.

Question...when I enter their site into a site like SEMrush, it says they have only 1 organic keyword. When I look at their Home page source code, there are 11 keywords (these 11 keywords are WAY to broad and not good at all; and I understand that meta-tag keywords are not that relevant to Google)....so my question is how can I accurately find a websites keywords (or is this really just further proof that they need serious keyword research)?

Does any of this make sense?

        You might want to enter the site at compete.com just to look at traffic etc. If its getting traffic, there has to be a reason.
