Hot Business Categories Using Mobile Search Only

I'd like to ask for your help in putting together a list of business categories most often searched using a smart phone or mobile device.

Ideally I'd like to know the percentages that each business category is searched. For example: "Towing/auto wrecking 2.7%". My guess is, a detailed list of business niches with percentages would have most likely be published by one of the mobile trade magazines.

For now, I'll start a list with a few likely search targets and appreciate any ideas that you have on the subject.

Thanks

towing/auto wrecking
limousine/taxi service
nail salon
hair salon
coffee shop
DUI attorney

and so on.......

You could go to Google Keywords Tool and use the ADVANCED

Choose mobile search and get all this info.

      Hey Quentin,

Thanks for that suggestion. I had forgotten that Google Keyword Tool offers a mobile search function. The problem that I had once I got there was that in order to start a search, I have to type in a keyword.

For example, I typed in "businesses" but the results I got back pertained only to that keyword. I then tried "mobile searches for business" and those results weren't helpful in terms of identifying the business categories most searched using a mobile device. I'd appreciate hearing from you if you have any suggestions as to how I can refine my GKT search.

One positive result of your suggestion lead me to the DexKnows local search page. After digging around a bit, I located what they claimed are the top searches for business categories for my city, Denver Colorado (results posted below). I am a bit skeptical of the results as I searched several other cities and they all had the same categories in the same order. And while this list is somewhat useful, I'm still hoping to get additional information on the types of businesses searched most frequently on mobile devices and smart phones.

Here is the DexKnows complete search list:

          Hello Zurich,

The dexknows search page came back with a heading that read "Top Searches" followed by that list. My guess is that the list is the result of all searches performed through their web portal.

Here is a link to the actual page: Denver, CO Yellow Pages/Online Phone Book, Search Local Business Listings @ DexKnows.com™

Those lists seem kind of long, I am just giving my opinion as someone who has been on the road and searched.

For medical I would call my insurance company first to make sure they cover where I am

However as a traveler on business

            Food
            Car wash
Dry cleaner - nah the hotel takes care of that
            gas station
            bar
Laundry - again the hotel takes care of that
            liquor store
            ATM's
Panera Bread to get free internet access
            Home Depot

These are things I have searched for many times when out of my area

Thanks for your feedback. I've corrected my post above to indicate that the long list I obtained from Dexknows was for general search and wasn't mobile specific.

I've added your excellent suggestions to those provided by Mindy. Now I've got the beginnings of a really good list.

As others provide me with business categories they search using their smart phone or mobile device I'll add them to this list too.

            The mobile search list:

            dentist
            physical therapist
            doctor
            chiropractor
            hair salon
            orthodontist
restaurants (what type are searched for most often?)
            car wash
            veterinarian
            dry cleaner & laundry
            night clubs & bars
            liquor stores
            banks (ATM locations)
            hardware stores (home depot)
free wifi (panera bread for example)

This probably doesn't help but here are the things that I look for on my phone when I am out and about:

    My dentist
    My physical therapist/doctor/chiropractor
    My hair salon
    My daughter's orthodontist

    Restaurants in the area
    car wash in the area

Food is the main one I look for where I am not looking for a specific place such as MY dentist or MY vet

I know you are gathering already aggregated lists. I was just trying to think of what do I PERSONALLY look for on my phone.

      Hello Mindy,

Now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks for providing results from the real world.

As I haven't found any compiled lists elsewhere, I believe that I'll start my own list. Beginning with your suggestions.

If there's anyone else that would care to share there personal search experience on their mobile device, please post them in this thread and I'll add them to categories that Mindy suggested.

      thanks,

      Randy

  • I am also kind of skeptical of long lists like this.

Common sense tells me that some professions will require more research than just looking somebody up in maps. For example, on the first list provided, the following are listed:

Divorce attorney - really? Anybody going through divorce is going through a lot of thinking and weighing out options and making decisions. I can't imagine anyone just pulling out their cell phone the minute they decided to file for divorce and looking up whoever comes up first.

Home builders and general contractors - I've been connected to that industry for a while and I know how much research, comparison and trust building goes into picking one.

    And the list goes on...

As for me, my results are about the same as others above. I use my cell to search:

Restaurants - fast food and dining
    Stores - all kinds
    Banks & ATM
    Gas stations

Anything needing research and comparison, I do on computer.

      Hi Katerina,

You are correct. Long lists like the one that I posted above are much to broad. I've updated that post so as to highlight that the list was general in nature and not mobile specific as I had intended.

I'm going to add your suggestions to my mobile list. Feel free to contribute any other business categories that you think would apply.

      Thank you,

      Randy

okay - totally random but I decided to actually do the hard work of LOOKING at my google app to see what I have been typing in there. I know. Novel concept.

I type restaurants much less than I realized. I mostly yelp those. Same with car wash and other services.

Here is honest to goodness the last 30 things I have searched on my iphone: (sheesh - this is like baring my soul)

    from most recent to older:

    pediatric dentist (zip)
    pediatric dentist
    pediatric dentist (town)
    pet value
    pet smart
pet store (town) (several times in different towns)

I searched for lyrics and songs a lot more often than are in that list. When I hear a song on the radio I like, I will use my google voice search to get more info on the song. Artist, lyrics, etc.

NONE of those searches were for niche research. They were actual, real person searches of what was relevant for me that day.

I think I may have muddied the waters with posting this but I realized that I search for restaurants mostly in yelp and not in google mobile and didn't want to be leading you astray in your market research.

I type restaurants much less than I realized. I mostly yelp those. Same with car wash and other services.

Here is honest to goodness the last 30 things I have searched on my iphone: (sheesh - this is like baring my soul).
      Hello Mindy,

Thanks for baring your soul for the good of the list.

Several interesting patterns are appearing as I study your latest search results.
      • First is the need for sub-categories, i.e. pediatric dentist under the general category of dentist, etc.
      • Then you bring up a very good point, geo-modifiers. I know from searching for my own clients that I will often get different search results if I put the city name before or after the keyword. The same is true for using a zip code or common regional name that isn't a city. I'm going to have give some thought on how to incorporate this into the mobile search list.
      • Next you bring up several searches that could lead to a local business search. These are potential keywords that business should be optimizing for. A few examples from your list:
      • Your search term - Keyword for business category
      • (song) lyrics - music store
      • (song) artist - music store
      • (song) album - music store
      • (title) book - book store
      • good sci fi fantasy books 2010 - book store
      • calculate percentage of weight lost - health club or weight loss center
      • teflon alternative - kitchen utensils store
      • teflon dangers - poison control center
      • what is it like to live in Angola - moving companies
      • roadtrip with cats - travel agency
      • lynx point siamese - pet store
      • seal point siamese - exotic pet store
      • old men muppet characters names - adult fantasy role play games
I appreciate your suggestions and will continue to work on a more comprehensive list that will indicate not only the business categories most often searched for using a mobile device, but also what keywords offer an opportunity for savvy business that want to maximize their potential for being found in local search.

Mindy, please feel free to share any other insights that you have.

      Thanks again,

      Randy

Randy - I think the geomodifiers are VERY important in mobile marketing keywords. I usually am looking for something within driving range if I am looking on my phone.

I think as I browsed through my google app and through my husband's google app - we both are constantly searching for a geomodified term.
