Mobile Sites...are you using template sites or making them yourself?

After trying GoMobi, I think I am going to try making mobile sites myself. I did not realize when I tried them that they collect a fee for each site. Somehow, I assumed I could place multi client sites on one account. I have a few of my own that I would like to "go mobile".

Anyhow, what are you guys using to make mobile sites? Are there any particular products offered here (or there) that make things easier?

Thanks,
Alton

    Hi Alton

We plan to mix them up a bit. If the clients want specific functionality that always comes at a cost so we will run with GoMobi on those ones.

The local customers who just want to be seen we will probably run with templates that we create ourselves.

    Hope that helps

    regards

Hey Alton - the "catch" with gomobi is they now have a few resellers you can choose to purchase through and each has different price points.

When I first learned about them last summer, name.com was the only reseller in the us and their price was like $6/month per site. Since then enom and now openSRS now offer the gomobi sitebuilder to their resellers and openSRS has the best price I've seen at only $2.50/site plus their initial reseller signup fee.

Seems like a small, fair price to pay if you're charging a monthly hosting fee plus for the initial design - plus once designed clients can then edit their sites without you having to get involved.

If you want to do your own sites with wordpress, this article at sitepoint mentions some nice themes or if you want to design your own and know your way around a WYSIWYG html editor, I think it was user "Quentin" that recently had a WSO about doing things yourself that looked nice.

Having looked at just about every option out their for doing mobile websites I think I'm going to use goMobi myself through OpenSRS - but there's no reason you can't try a few different services out and mix things up a little as Bronwyn and Keith mentioned.

    Cheers,

    Steve

The biggest problem with them is they charge you to send all your traffic to them.

Great for them Bad for us.

Currently I am using the Tappinn platform and I also invested in Quentin's mobile website building course to know and understand the brains of how to build them. The Tappinn platform is a little pricy $49.95 a month, but well worth it. I make that back times three. I can build unlimited smart mobile sites, QR codes for the mobile sites and track the codes. So look at TappInn QR Code Marketing to see what they offer. Either way you can't go wrong.

Does Tappinn put their link at the bottom of the mobile pages, like gomobi does?

Yep. it says powered by Tappinn.com. It is not a clickable link though. Here is a example: PODi AppForum 2011. But like I said, that's another reason why I invested in Quentin's course so I can learn how to have control over the mobile sites when I want to and if some clients insist on that. But I love doing my mobile sites on Tappinn because it's so easy and my clients don't care. They don't have time to do what I'm doing for them.

You can also find tons of free mobile templates just by searching "free mobi templates" in google.

That example mobile website you just gave is poor quality and not coded properly for mobile phones. That is an example of a BAD mobile website I'm afraid.

Yeah that one was a rush job. I would be afraid to. That was a flyer for an event in Vegas. Here is a much better one created through the Tappinn platform as well. *Meet Nicky Hayden

Simon I think you should check that site on a mobile phone as it does not fit properly.

My friend just did his on gomobi and has a lot of problems with it falling of his domain and going to theirs.

Now I am not just saying this to promote my own stuff but would you put all your websites on my domain please and pay me a few dollars for the privilege. I will get all your traffic and any credit will go to me.

If someone makes a mistake with the url etc I will direct your traffic to my site and make another sale.

    Thanks.

Steve - Is that a monthly fee for you to work out of as opposed to a monthly fee that would be used for each client? As in one for each mobile site you do?

Thanks...And how does the reseller account thing work? Would that be for someone selling mobile sites? Or for someone who is selling businesses on the idea of making a mobile site and going through your services to make their own?

    A lot of questions...sorry!

Sorry - looks like I wasn't too clear on that, but the pricing mentioned is what those companies charge you for each site.

That all depends on which provider you decide to go with. When I last looked at name.com a few months ago they don't make it easy to "hide" the fact that you're working with them - so I don't think it'd be easy with them to give clients access to modify their own mobile sites.

OpenSRS seems to be more or less "invisible" (though I need to confirm this) so I think you could easily mark up their services for resale at $xx.xx a month and give clients access to design themselves, or you could charge a fee to design for them. Either way your cost is $2.50/month/site

Hope that makes sense, but best to go to those companies websites and check out all the details firsthand.

Quentin, who replied in this thread, has an awesome mobile site tutorial that will teach you how to write your own scripts, I've used it a few times.

    Just a suggestion.

I went ahead and bought Quentin's offer and he does have a great membership. I was pleasantly surprised at all the information and resources he offers his members.

Those GoMobi and other sites of that nature are not what we need as offline marketers. Very restricted, and, like Quentin says, they just bring traffic to themselves. After you start using some of the mobile templates you get from Quentin and others here, you will realize how amateurish GoMobi type sites can be. If you are selling a mobile site, they are not an option...in my opinion.

      On another note....

Where I live, in a liddle-biddie town, folks have never heard of a mobile site. Heck, many businesses here don't have a website. They are amazed that I know how to build a website. I told them I can build them a website.

Does anyone here know how to build a website? Just kidding!

Yes Quentins members area walks you through designing a custom mobile site..very easy to follow..once you do one you will be on your way...I have never built a mobile site until I found the script and mobile design is now my main business to the offline market.

I am a me-tooer regarding Quentin's program for building mobile websites. Glad I did as his customer support is second to none. Thank you Quentin for being a stand up guy.

    If anyone is interested, type:

converting traditional website into mobile website

into your favorite search engine. You will get an eyeful. There seem to be a minimum of 6sites touted on the first page and they all list their prices. This is good as it gives you pricing parameters.

Personally, I am sticking w/Q's material as it is easy to use. The biz owners with whom we talked with to date all want someone else to do it and maintain it. His program lets us put one live in 45 minutes.

I am NOT a reseller and don't even have an affiliate link for his program. I just happen to be a fan of a program that works and guy who provides super support.

    Just my 2¢...

Thanks for all the kind words.

Lets face it if you have zero skills then sites like gomobi and Tappinn etc are great I just feel that paying them to host your site is a bad move from a management and traffic point of view.

Its sort of like running your business from a hosted site like wordpress.com or blogger. Yes it makes it all a lot easier but not very professional.

Glad to see you bought Quentin's stuff. If he wasn't going to pitch it I would have. As far as templates if you are even half good at HTML you can copy many of the templates you see on template sites and likely have something that works better due to Quentin's script.

Or, hire a designer to make something similar to them. From oDesk it won't cost much!

I made a basic template of my own with Quentin's offer and now it takes maybe 30 minutes to do a new mobile site. I am going to host them on my own site and pocket all of the money myself ;-) Once I figure out a little better how to do some find and replace routines I'll be able to knock them out in a 15 minutes.

I actually use Microsoft Frontpage which allows for global changes and will do a tutorial this week.

I have been looking for a more robust editor but most free ones have the same limitations.

If you know of a good one let me know.

I, too, am a huge fan of Quentin's product.

The templates in that product I customized a bit and now I have my own selection of templates for the customer to choose from. I will also do a "custom" site for them at an additional charge.

I think a good mixture of both gives you the appearance of being a "larger" company and more able to adapt to the client's needs.

        Hope that helps!
