Am I trying too hard with this fb fan page?

Hey guys,

So I'm really hoping to drum up some business with making some fan pages for local businesses.

Here's the thing. I come from a "copy" bias, and I'm not so sure if this misses the mark being copy driven as opposed to beautiful, image-driven design.

As you can see on the page (which isn't finished yet--no banner, or other tabs) I made one for a local business (got some dog grooming for one) and used an awesome template available in the War Room.

I'm just not sure if businesses will "go" for something sold this way. Most big companies use awesome pages like the Nike one I show at the bottom, and I get that but I don't want to pay for expensive online fb page creators until I can justify it.

Therefore the copy driven page.

I'd like to hear from those of you that can think outside of "what we do" online, those that maybe own businesses. Is this too much "IM" stuff?

Should I go "professional"?

Thoughts?

Thanks...

I would go more "informative" style and establish yourself as an authority, than actual "promotional" style right off the bat... give them a fan community to participate in, with information they can learn from... and then market further down the page or on the backend... or maybe on an "about us" page.

Looks like a great promotional page, for instance, if it were a WSO..., but for face book, I was expecting more something to be a "part of"... that discusses issues and shares thoughts on a subject.

Just me, but I might take a more subtle approach.

Im no face book expert though. Just trying to help.

Hiles knows alot about this kind of thing.

I think that the FB page should be themed to match the client's web site. So the website is lime green - the fan page should be green too, etc.

    Hi Nathan

They look pretty good to me. I guess you have to test and measure. Do you offer a banner as well. If so I think it is a great deal for people. It will also depend on the NIche you are working with. Some folks are more visual than others.

    Good luck with it !

    Best Wishes

    Thanks John.

No, that's exactly what I'm looking to hear. (And I was afraid to believe. After all, it'll take more work.)

    I appreciate it.

No prob. Happens to the best of us every day. Can hardly resist the tendency to "promote" as marketers. Very exciting stuff. I hope it works for you.

I'll be honest, I didn't read much of the copy but that's because I'm more visual. I prefer pictures/videos to text.

The first thing I did notice, though:

    "...

    It's simple really."

It's an immediate detachment from your viewers. You don't want to segregate them, you want to sympathize with them.

Telling them that something they cannot do is simple is more degrading than persuasive.

      Hey thanks, and great catch.

That's not what I meant at all by that writing. But going back I can see how not "being in my head" (as my prospects aren't) you could see it that way.

Instead, I meant it more along the lines of...

"The truth is it's a simple choice really...you need to have a presence online/social sites/facebook." ...that kind of meaning.

      As opposed to…

"It's simple really. So why haven't you? Are you dumb and can't figure it out?"

And I would never denigrate their abilities or take a look-down-my-nose position. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll make it clearer.

      Lots of good tips here.

      (Changes on the way...)

Most people are looking so hard for some complicated version of the truth...they fail to see the simple "Self Evident" things.

You are just telling them that there's no need to search for a truth that is self evident. We can all relate, as many times we dont see the forrest for all of the tree's and all of the sales pitches, and the ads we read... and all the disoriented, broken up information floating around in our heads.

You are bringing them back to the simple self evident truths that are obvious, but yet we look past.

    "Obvious Adams".

Im just rambling here. Maybe you can find some inspiration somewhere in that.

In a related note, you have no idea how relevant that is for me right now in my own thinking. I keep thinking about different methods I know to approach potential clients—but I'm making it way too convoluted for myself. (I'm talking about a variety of services in this instance.)

I keep making 2, 3 and more step processes when I should just be striking up conversations at the least and taking it from there.

Great validation and timing John. (Even though you were empathizing with my sales copy).

I don't know if it's the format or the volume of copy, but it's too long for a FB page. Your samples could do better as additional pages labeled "samples." And yes, you do need an avatar page (side bar graphic).

I can give you a good trade rate for FB page design if you want to PM. Also, I'd be happy to give you feedback about your promotion for them. I think a $97 FB page matching the theme of their website is a great promotion. Retail prices usually start at $150.

Hey guys and gals, thanks for the feedback. Exactly what I'm looking for. Yeah the side banner should be up when I finish it this weekend.

The only people I've shared it with are Facebook friends. So it's still in progress. It looks like I'll be making a few more changes with the page as well.

    Good to know folks, thanks.

  • I see what you are doing. Now here is my opinion and I am NO expert, just hear me out.

I came from the world of IM'ing. And I own 3 small local businesses in town here. Ok, now that I have explained why I will tell you my opinion and why I feel this way.

Yes - it does look too much like an advertisement, (for you and me , that means it looks too IM'ing.) It looks like it may be a national ad from a newspaper, etc.

    2. It is a bit long. Now, when I see something I hate to read something that I didnt purposely look for or that I am interested in. This page might land on someones screen and they will have to read it to be interested, most people have about a 7 second attention spand for **** they happen to 'run across' , see as a business owner I am always busy and dont have alot of time to be reading stuff all day and surfing, BUT, if this was about Offline Consulting and that was what I was looking for to learn, I would spend more time and read all the small writing. understand??

I think if you kept it a bit larger in the font aspect and made it more simple, and maybe included about 4-6 bullets of info or benefits, I could 'digest' that quickly by looking at your page and understand. Then maybe at the bottom, of your fanpage, you could just have very small thumbnails that opened up if you clicked on them, they would display the others you have completed.

When I am 'surfing' and I come across your page, I would like to be able to scan it with my eyes, understanding a few key points about the page, then realizing my own fanpage sucks or that I need one and then I would call you or email you for your special.

I like that you are creating a page just for 'building fanpages' I have thought about it myself and I think I will be doing it as well.

Please dont take my opinion personally. Just my thoughts ok Nathan??

    Tommy

Here was a few pages I had my team do.

    Boot Camp

    Used Motorcycle Sales

    Bismarck Glass Tinting

    LongBeach Fitness

PS. I charge more than $97, I think you could get $147 per your designs.

    Hey Tommy,

First of all, thank you. That's what I want to hear. You guys are too funny—what good would it be if was offended just because you're trying to help me? That's why I asked. I'm more concerned with my bank account than my ego as easily bruised feelings deter success and forward movement, so judge away. (Just not on my clothes. I have a 2-year old at home and I change her more than me.)

And nice pages! I'm assuming some of those photo's are stock images? I suppose those can be rolled into the cost to the customers?

I was also hoping to add functions like video, live links, vanity url's and so forth. Are most of the rest of you doing just one tab? Two? More?
