Im just pissed off! UGH.

Ok, I just called like 15 places today. I understand that my location , we are slow and not real aggressive in our marketing as a whole.

BUT, I called 15 places and most of them said that they have it handled, when clearly they do NOT! Some hung up the phone on me , after I especially told them my other business name of a local business that I own. They said " Im not interested in your idea" and hung up. I wanted to call back so damn back and ring someone's neck!

If I gave up on some of the local market because these guys are just idiots anyway and dont understand the new concept of Google Directory.

If I still offer my services to these local people then what would be your next option if not calling, I tried calling other people but it seems everyone is busy all the time. And I tried to find as many emails as I could to just email clients, not many people even have that listed in GP or manta,or yp.com

So , would you just try some walking into the business? UGH UGH, maybe I just need to vent. I am NOT good with people being rude!

When I was in IMing, we were taught to add value and be 'hunted' not the one to be hunting others. SO, maybe I need to think about ways to be the leader in this area somehow....

any words to my venting???????

Don't take rejection personally. More easily said than done, yes but they're not rejecting you. They don't even know you. They're rejecting your offer.

Would you be rejected if you walked into a business with a fist full of cash and yelled, "WHO WANTS MONEY?"

Perhaps you need to re-think your offer/service. If you were in their shoes, would you want what you're offering?

Oh, and by the way. The "WHO WANTS MONEY" line actually works for an associate of mine who's a business finance broker, but he tones it down a bit!

    It's good to vent.

But it's their loss. Be immune to any rudeness. You know you're good, talented and have valuable services to provide.

But never, ever do want you may feel like doing and insult them or "let them have it". (Not that you were planning to, but I've been there and I understand.)

The best thing you can do is use that fire to keep going and let them have it to lose. You WILL get someone you can help. Concentrate on moving on.

It's so frustrating because you know you could help, but you can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped. It also sucks because they're rude, and you don't like the way they "look" at you over the phone so to speak. No one likes the way it feels.

But you must have supreme confidence. You know who you are, your worth, and so on. Who are they? Right?

Have supreme confidence in yourself and you'll start to care less about others and what they think about you. I know it can be frustrating, again, I've been there too, but it feels good to think, "ah, screw it. They're not my customer then. Their loss." And move on.

Not just to the next customer, but move on mentally. It doesn't hurt to even feel a bit smug. That sounds counter-intuitive, but it works. (And people that sense your confidence—not arrogance—will want what you have.)

I don't mean to preach, you're just venting and I'm sure you know this stuff already, but I thought I'd try to cheer you up.

They're not worth it if they're not worth it. Keep it up.

Nica advice Nathan. I can see that you are soft-spoken and I appreciate your patience with regard to your work.
I have also worked as a Customer Service Rep before and it is not easy convincing people over the phone, to spare a little of their time so I can discuss the importance of my call. I've also encountered rude people, very rude people, and it ruined my day, but life has to go on.

You're getting the same response a telemarketing sales rep would get...change your positioning to one that is pursued because of the value you offer, and not one that seems to be interrupting for your personal gain.

Time is everyone's most valuable commodity - you can never get it back and NO one owes you their time.

Your call may have been the 5th or 6th or 1st for the day trying to sell a business your service or product and even though you may have the best option for bringing them new business, they simply hear that you are not someone calling them as a potential buyer of whatever they are offering and feel you are taking up their time and phone line blocking those potential callers.

I always hated cold calling and would always look for ways to get people to come to me. While working in the financial service industry 30 years ago I contacted all the librarians in our county offering a free financial planning seminar. I think out of about 12 libraries, I got 8 of them to allow me to do the seminar. They not only had a built in audience but also free advertising through radio and newspapers.

Some of my best clients came from those free seminars - maybe this is something you can do with the service you are offering? Also, business organizations. I did the same free seminars for several business organizations and again obtained several very good clients via this method.

Your "seminar" could be offered showing businesses how to maximize their local exposure in a non-yellow page world and have a drawing at the end of the seminar to give a free whatever it is you do (you never mentioned that) - you get all the attendees to fill out a 'short' survey of what they felt about what you discussed, do they see the value for their businesses and are they interested in having you sit down and discuss it. Ask their phone number, name, etc.. You give one away and get many who are definitely interested.

I'll second these ideas. I've been on both sides of the phone-- when I owned stores in Chicago we'd be solicited at least once a day by some web jockey or other promising to build our web presence. Blah blah blah. Got totally jaded to the pitches.

THEN, when I discovered how to do all that stuff myself and approached other business owners, you can guess the reception my calls to them got.

I too have done the seminar route, and been a guest on local cable TV talking about small business marketing, and even gone around talking to business groups like the Rotary Club. Those activities have proved least traumatic and most profitable.

You may want to try it, too.

I'm not really sure how much you are making or what your advertising budget is, but if you can afford it have something nice (not expensive) delivered to the business...ie pizza, flowers, candy...now you got their attention. Follow up with a phone call and say, I was calling to see if you got the gift I sent over. Now, you have their attention, tell them you just wanted to brighten their day and see if there were anything else that you can do for them to help them in their business, and I'll bet they will at least listen to what you have to say.

As far as being pissed off, I understand. That is why I like S K Y P E. Cloaked calls to the idiots that piss you off. Not that I would ever do anything like that. Al

I'm with Dexx. Change the positioning to being pursued.

We never lacked offline business. Not because we're smooth or fancy, we're not. We just talk with business owners wherever we are. At lunch, in the bank line, but we don't really cold call.

Then we act super confused that they are not marketing like wild on the internet.

I usually pull out my phone and search for their business. Yep, not found = business.

But the frame is not one of needing or even wanting business. Just matter of fact "here's what I do for folks like you who can't be found online."

A silly question, would it take much to position yourself where you had 15 people calling you and asking about your services ?

that is an angle that may work for you ? maybe some simple newspaper ads "how we helped a local business owner add 33% to their bottom line with 1 simple step" get your free copy here www simplebusiness com or a free bus speech / talk ?

  • You guys have put a smile on my face. For some of you I will explain what it is I exactly do for a business.

    1. market research
    2. website creation
    3. Google places listing and optimization
    4. simple website seo
    5. video creation

I have already done this for a couple of businesses in town. They are ranking very well for what I have done for them in the Google Places and video part.

I came from the world of Internet Marketing and I made some decent money, never the kind you hear from the big dogs. I just lost the love for it. The mlm wasnt my passion. THe whole time I was involved in that , I owned local businesses. I just kinda fell into this offline marketing niche. All because I wanted to rank my own business on google ,etc. I dominate google with my own businesses.

I have a couple of businesses that want to work with me already. But, I thought I would go out and get more with cold calling everyone I knew. I would use that fact that I live in the same town and some already heard of my business here locally(11 years), that has kinda worked for me.

I HATE cold calling, because I have been in the clients position of getting calls all day long of people trying to sell ****. Let me tell you , I can instantly feel the conversation getting cold when I am talking to a possible client. They may even feel it in my tone of voice, sensing weakness. hahahaha.

Maybe I need to slow down and just get 1 at a time and if it takes me 6months to get 10 clients, then so be it.....

I just am really not sure if cold calling will work for me. Maybe I need to hire someone from the local 'jobservice' company to just call and set up appts. for me. I am really good in person selling, I feel...

I have thought about maybe mailing out an envelope with info inside it. Probably get thrown out.

I need to drink a beer before I call just to 'not give a ****' if I get rejected. I have to say I am a (alpha) or (typeA) personality, and we DO NOT LIKE REJECTION,etc.

Thanks for all your kind words guys...

Maybe I am not cut out for cold calling. Try something else...

I never cold call anybody. If you can't position yourself as a leader in your industry and get leads for yourself with Internet Marketing, then how can you do this for your clients?
Create a large targeted Social Media Following including LinkedIn Profile. Make sure that you come up on Google Search when people are searching for online marketing.
Also, go to local Chamber and Business Mixers, people looking for Internet Marketing attend these things.

  • In the IM world, it seemed a bit easier, people were always looking for the next big thing, (mlm company), you would just position yourself with that new mlm and teach others how to market, etc. You would look like the leader.

So, Yes Dex , I would love to be 'hunted' and not 'hunt' As MIke Dillard would say " teach people how to drill the hole, not what drill to use" When they see that you are the pro at showing people how to drill the hole, they will want to use the drill that you are using! something like that. I want to position myself as a leader, and I am very smart at what I can do for a business. But I am new at this 'prospecting' thing and it will take time I guess.

Thanks for all the 'pats on the back' you guys!

On your white name badge, just put your name as Google.
You will have people circling around you going... "google, google, you work for google"
I tell them no..but I get my clients on Page one of Google. It's up to you to close from there, at these mixers, it may take meeting a potential clients several times before getting a meeting or closing a deal. Took me 4 months to close this Franchise, now I have over 100 of their locations.

You have some good advice on here. Love the "Google" name tag. Might try that myself! Cold calling should be one of numerous strategies, not your only one. Others make valid points: don't take it personal. You have no way of knowing what they're going through. January usually stinks with year end stuff. Small business, in my opinion, require a lot of eduction. They still don't get websites let alone internet marketing. On top of that, unless you are selecting businesses with proof of an advertising budget, you cannot just assume they can afford $200 or $1,000 for what you have. Get out and build relationships locally and dominate online to get those who are ready for you.

If your giving up after only 15 calls....

You don't have what it takes to cold call.

If you don't have what it takes... You don't have what it takes...

Proactive marketing is an age old principle. Cold calling has been working for years and is a proactive marketing source.

Yes... I started with cold calling and I still spend a couple of hours per day doing so. BUT.... I have several other marketing streams going at the same time.

That is the only way I know to keep a CONSTANT flow of steady work..... I have a Monthly Mixxer tonight with a local network group. I also have signs out.... and various print marketing pieces.

What works the best out of all of them?

Cold Calling.... But if you don't have the stones... you don't have the stones.

I am an ALPHA too, but I also recognize stupidity when I see it. So when these guys get all upset on the phones or in person.... NEXT... not my target market.

There is no reason for me to cry over spilled milk..... It is a numbers game...

15 calls is a drop in the bucket. After 150 you will have a couple of appointments and glad you didn't quit.

My father told me..... Nobody likes a quitter.
Come to think of it... so did my football coach.

Some people get their defenses up because you are calling, and kinda get rude every now and again....

So what.... the ones that act like that are the ones that are the easiest to sell. So they freak out on you. It's not you .... it's them....

They are just like the ones with the "No Solicitors" sign on their door. They will buy anything. Every time I saw one of those signs... it was like a target that said... instant sale....

IF you have one of those on your door, and can't understand why people keep knocking on your door... Now you know why. It's the international flag of "We Buy Anything, we do not know how to say no."

    Anyway....

Don't give up bro.... You want to be successful. You want to be the dominant alpha... KEEP CALLING until you get a deal.

    Then give up.

Just know... it's not you... it's them, when people act a fool.

Amir is right!!! I am a noob to IM but I have a sales rep for 20 years and I do all my own cold calling. Cold calling is not the only way to get an appointment but is has been the most effective and efficient for me. I won't get into a p***ing contest over what an "alpha" male is, but persistence is key. I have been calling the same potential client once a week since September and they finally gave me the appointment. The calls each took anywhere from 2-5 minutes, so approx. 2 hours of calling to get a 1 hour appointment. I got their business. I expect to get about $1000 in commissions from them this year. As I build a relationship with them I expect my business will grow in future years. I have built my client list this way and I believe most sales rep have done the same.

      Good luck.

        Truth....

My father sold advertising... He sold Mass Media... (television)

He always said the hardest thing he has ever sold was "air".

The way that he got his start in that business was by contacting the TV station he chose to work for.... EVERY DAY....

He contacted them either by phone or fax every single day... Back then fax technology was hot and new.

Finally... the one day that he wasn't going to say anything.... the one day that he was going to just skip calling for that day.... The phone rings.

"Where's my fax?" said the vice president of Heritage Media at the time. (Owners of a few local independants before they all became "Fox")

The moral of the story. My father had no experience in television advertising sales. He knew nothing of ratings, and target demographics, etc... He had no formal education beyond Garfield High School in East LA where he was expelled before graduating for knocking out the principle.

He was just persistent, and willing to do what no one else would do.

He does what's uncomfortable because he knows it works, and does it with tenacity.

He ended up becoming a top producer in the nation for Fox Networks advertising sales. Then management. Giving a lot of good people their start in the television industry. People in several markets all over the country. One guy even owns a couple of stations in Puerto Rico.

        How did it all start?

He didn't give up five minutes before the miracle.

        Straight up.

      Hey Louie,

I was wondering what to do about those businesses. I actually like talking to business owners face to face, but was concerned about the "no solicitors" signs. I don't want to come across as disrespectful to them (which it would seem to be if we do what they specifically ask us not to do).

So are you saying you'd go in and pitch something to them anyway? And they don't get angry and show you the sign on the door?

      Thanks

Part of the telemarketing, or any marketing endeavor is handling a lot of rejection. Sometimes people are busy, tired, frustrated, broke, or whatever. For every 100 people you call, you may get 10 who "say" they are interested, and out of that 10, only 2 really are!! That's the industry we are working with. That's the world we live in.

The key for You, is to TAKE IT EASY. Have fun with it. Don't sweat the "small" stuff. And actually, the fact that you are IN BUSINESS is the big picture, and the daily rejections are small things. I'm not making light of your situation. I'm just saying that you have to learn to let it "roll off your back like water on a duck."

Realize that you are putting in your time, and IN TIME, you will reap if you don't give up. Remember, to smile while you're on the phone, pity the dummies, and keep moving ahead with your smile intact. It'll pay off sooner if not later.

Back in the early 80's i sold life insurance. Cold calling was the way you started. At first it really sucked, calling 150-200 people a week. But then after a while, you would check your stats and you would realize that for every 90 calls you made, you would get 1 sale. Then as time goes on it would creep up to 3 sales for every 90 calls. Then after 2-3 years it was 6 sales for every 90 calls. After 5-6 years it got much easier, less cold calling but the sales to call ratio always got larger. So you could pretty much write your own paycheck each week depending on how many calls you made. For those who don't know how life insurance agents get paid, here is how we used to get paid. Lets say I sold an individual a life insurance policy that would cost that individual $100.00 per month or $1200.00 per year. Once the policy was issued and the individual made his first monthly payment of $100.00 i would get a commission check for $1200.00. Then for the next 10 years if that individual would keep making his $100.00 per month payment i would get a residual of $600.00 the 2nd year, $300.00 the 3rd year, then down to $50.00 per year for every year that individual continued to make monthly payments. Now you can see if you get say 100 clients a year, over the years those residuals kept coming, so it was a pretty good gig. But the first 2-3 years was a financial struggle, but after 10 years you were vested even if you quit the insurance business. Which i did after 15 years. To this day i still get a check from the Insurance company every month like clockwork. Sorry to drag this on......but just keep plugging away on your cold calling eventually it will become 2nd nature.....

Shorter replies people! Jeez leweez! One paragraph or less! LMOL! Not 5 pages!

Hey bro, I feel your pain, check my day yesterday here: http://www.warriorforum.com/mind-war...oes-devil.html

But, you know what, I picked myself up today and made 55 dials and now have 12 new leads! I HATE cold calling too, it sucks. Had a few ppl today I wanted to toss into a boston crab octagon style, but whatever.

Position it like this and it wont seem as cold calls or 'salesy' bro:

YOU ARE OFFERING THEM SOMETHING TO BRING THEM MORE BUSINESS

If they feel you sincerely care about them and their biz needs, they will automatically want to work with you. Explain how you want them to get more business and heres how blah blah blah ...TRUST

    Awesome..... 55 calls... 12 leads...

    SWEET....

That's the way it's supposed to be. Sometimes when you first start 55 calls.... 1 lead.

But once you have done it a time or three... no biggie.

You need to call more. Get a predictive autodialer to speed things up. My telemarketer makes around 400+ calls a day to get around 100 live calls. Even so, he only makes about 5 appointments a week for me.

If you're going to work outbound, its a large numbers game. Make sure you're selling a product that makes it worthwhile. In my case by telemarketer it costs me $450-$550 to make each sale.

I wanted to call back so damn back and ring someone's neck!
Give them another reason to talk to you. The problem with a completely cold, singular offer is that if they don't want to purchase from you right now, they wont.

Give them another reason to interact with you. Invite them to a BNI, Chamber or Rotary meeting. Offer a copy of your book (you do have a printed & bound 'special report' right?) and offer to deliver it in person.

Make a printed newsletter and ask them if you can send them your newsletter.

And I tried to find as many emails as I could to just email clients, not many people even have that listed in GP or manta,or yp.com

So , would you just try some walking into the business? UGH UGH, maybe I just need to vent. I am NOT good with people being rude!
Direct mail. I completely turned my business around through direct mail.

If your prospect hasn't verified their places listing, doesn't have a solid web presence, they aren't going to see or even respond to your online advertisement. You need to approach them offline and direct mail is the best way to do that.

Look into Dan Kennedy's Magnetic Marketing system. This is the best $299 you can put into your marketing efforts. The idea is to craft a direct mail sequence that gets the prospect to call you.

It works, I do it myself and other than BNI it is the only way I am marketing my business.

Try posting ads to get B2B outside sales-critters. You can use USFreeAds, and others -- not just Craig's. You'll need to put some thought into what you're going to sell the sales guy on to attract their attention about the opportunity, and the money they can make.

Do it as a test. Whether you get zero or few return contacts, especially in a tough economy, or a lot of them, that'll be important information.

If you can't sell a sales-critter, you're definitely not going to sell a business owner who gets tons of cold-calls all the time. That's almost certainly why they're rude to you -- to their ears, you sound like a sales guy. (How many times have you hung up on telemarketers who called you?)

Figure out what your value-add really is. Not a slick "pitch". That's what sales-guys do. Make sure you can accurately represent your true value-add to their businesses. If you're trying to pitch "sexy web stuff", they're not interested, it's just jargon they don't understand and don't see as truly valuable to their business. They may be wrong, but that's not for you to say; it's their business and you're looking for them to give you money.
