Ranking Multiple Inner Pages for Lawyers

I'm about to go after lawyers as my first client-type, and had a question as to how you guys go about ranking them for multiple keyword phrases.

Most people say you should focus on one keyword phrase per page. So the homepage is your #1 term, then you have like 10 inner pages each focused on other keywords.

Does this work for you guys? I only ask because although I've done this with 2 keywords before, I haven't done it for 5-10.

It's not really a direct answer to your question- but FYI, Keith Baxter says in the optimum linking strategy you should have 50% of backlinks pointing to your home page, and the other 50% of total links pointing to internal pages.

Yes - I do this for all my clients. They often have a lot of multiple top 10 positions due to internal pages also ranking well for their main terms.

That only works providing Google Places is not taking up majority of the first page, right? Are you still seeing many of those cases in your local area? I can hardly find any niches that are not consisting of 7 places and then 3 organics.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I figured it was possible, I just hadn't seen any local businesses pull that off and actually hit first page for internal pages. I guess that's a good sign for me
