Offliners - How are you making estimates?

When you approach a business for SEO (organic - main results) or places, how are you guys estimating how long it will take for them to get to page 1 or the top 3. How do you determine how much effort it will take and if it is feasible to take that client on?

(I am not an SEO newbie but I am new to google places)

Most highly competitive niches I just avoid for ranking, but I already know that for many of my niches I can get to page 1 within 72 hours.

Making promises about getting your client's web site on first page of Google is bad idea since Google makes changes too often. Not to mention that web site can be on first page of Google and still got no more customers depending on keyword search phrase. I would focus on getting more customers to your client as broader strategy, where Google placement will be just one of the way to get more clients
