Use SMS to Download QR Scanner

I am looking at using QR codes for a client. The client asked me: "Since QR codes will be new to my customers they may not have a QR scanner app currently on their smartphone. How do we get them to download the app while they are in my store so they can scan the QR code?"

I had to tell them I would have to get back with them. I am trying to save the sell. Is there any way for the customers to download the app? Would having them send a text message to a certain number work? If so, what are some services that offer this feature at a reasonable price?

Thanks,

Michael

I don't totally get your question, but in any case you highlight to your client this hurdle as a bonus: he can direct his prospects to a free scanner, basically becoming a sort of expert, guiding his clients to a free and cool new feature for their phones.

I like i-nigma.com (i-nigma.mobi for cellphones). Works great for both iPhones and Androids, and is free.

Jay: I am not a good salesman at all and I would have never thought about turning a problem into a bonus. Thanks for that great idea. As far as my question goes I guess what I am trying to ask is: "Is there any way a person can text something like "WOW" to 12345 (the text number) and have it give them a link to download the app for their phone?"

each QR code should have something right next to it that says "Go to www.____.com to get a free QR code scanner.
Jason: Do you think people would be too lazy to type in the web address right there in the store?

I am just trying to make it easy for customers. Any more suggestions?

      Thanks,

      Michael

Yes, it sure can be done. Though it might cost more (you have to buy or rent the SMS "keyword"). Simply typing i-nigma.mobi on their phones should not be too much work, and again, the merchant can emphasize how that PITA step will a thing of the past with a QR Code scanner

This page has a whole bunch of options. QR-Code Reader & Software - Mobile Barcodes

What would be nice though is if the business owner had it worked out so that a customer could just go to the owner's own site and download the scanner.

I think the best thing to do is to send them to Scan Life, their they can find a quick QR code download.
