What are the In and Outs of Outsourcing a Web Designer?

Been getting a lot of referrals for web design and redesign. And although I currently don't offer it as a stand alone, I would like to package it with along my services.

Here's the deal ... I have absoultutely no knowledge or interest in designing websites at all. Therefore, I'm looking to find a web designer to partner with and send work to for compensation.

Yes I do know about outsourcing overseas, but since I am a newbie, I would like to work with someone here 1st, and get to know somewhat of the ins and outs (even though I do not have any interest in buiding them)

How would you all suggest setting up a partnership with a web designer?

Should I work with someone locally (in my city)?

How can you ensure that they do good work?

Should I have them build the site, and then I set it up on my hosting account? Or just let them serve the client with their hosting.?

How should I arrange my compensation? A percentage of their price? Or add my mark up to the price?

Any other tips / advice?

Thanks for the help Warriors!

    In order of your questions:

Advertising here is a good start

I don't think it's necessary to work with someone local. I work with clients from all over, and what with Skype, Yugma, and other tools, it's really not necessary to be face to face anymore.

Check references (past clients), check sites they've built - and make sure to check a bunch.

This is up to you - wouldn't make a difference to me.

Add a markup to their price - but I wouldn't add much. Web design margins are pretty slim these days, and I assume you're making money from other services with these clients such as SEO.

Remember that you get what you pay for. The guy with the lowest price usually does a crappy job and flakes out half way through the project.

That doesn't mean you have to work with the most expensive guy either, but if you can I'd hire the web designer to build a project for YOU first - maybe an affiliate site - and see how they do and how you work with them, before you cut them loose on a client project.

    Good luck!
