I've heard that Google places business is one of the best opportunities going for local offline business. What are the basic steps involved?

Google places has change so much and it's much harder to get rank to the top position. My suggestion is to do your homework and explore Google places and educated yourself as much as possible.

You can offer a service of making listings for businesses and optimizing them, or simply use them as a resource to find potential clients.

I've got an entire report available if you'd like to see the steps involved. But in a nutshell:

      1. Register a business with Google.com/places
      2. Fill out every line EVERY LINE of the places page
      3. Ask your clients to write some nice reviews for you. (7 would be great - over the course of a month)
      4. Create some places online where you can link to your page. Vary the anchor text between the phone number, address and business name
      5. Use Google's optional "Coupon" and "Premium" services
      6. Be completely honest when you're filling it. Local phone number, real address, etc. . .
      7. Drive traffic to your website where you make a compelling offer. Feel free to do that in Google Places
      8. Answer the phone.
      9. Provide good service, and get more testimonials.
