Unregistered domains of local businesses (what to do)

Local businesses here dont own websites, but most do have an interest in owning one, the problem is they think they are too expensive (in the thousands, lol).

Either way most of their exact name domains are still available in the .com form and the local extension form. Is purchasing the domain, then calling them to sell it a bad idea?? how much would you charge per domain? quick money.

The other approach i have thinked of for this situation, which would make it a full time job is:
- Purchasing a reseller hosting service
- Purchasing a domain reseller service
- Offline door-to-door with every business to sell them the design/hosting and domain. (how much would u charge for 5-10 pages simple wordpress - thats what they need/want)

Check if it's trademarked at the USPTO.

If not, go ahead and try it. Can't hurt really...

Also you could register it and then tell them that you'll transfer it if they sign up for your services etc...

Just make sure you stay out of trademark problems.

Sorry I forgot to say that my market lacks almost every part of the industry because im not from the US. No patents or trade marks, good to go i guess?

      Thanks for the reply Will.

I'm not really sure, but check your local laws. Find out what's legal and not, then ya... go for it

Buy the domains, setup some simple web pages on them and get them ranked for search terms that would bring in customers. After you have some stats (how many uniques daily etc.) write a proposal letter to the business owner offering to sell them the website, and explain to them how profitable it'd be to set up an autoresponder and e-mail to people who opt-in various coupons etc. If the coupons/discounts were exclusive to this list, even better.

And if they don't want it or just want to leave you hanging until they can buy it from you on the cheap?

If you came into my business like that I wouldn't be pleased. You have taken away my option to buy my domain and build a site. I would tell you to go stick it and then you would be stuck with a website you couldn't sell to anyone else. You would sell it to me for $50 in three months I bet.

No I wouldn't. I would rather kill the domain than sell it to anyone for $50 (: No business in their right mind would deny an offer like I mentioned as long as you know how to sell it to them.

About taking away your option to buy your domain and build a site, you always had that option. You never took action, so somebody else did. Now you gotta pay the price for it. Plus as long as it's a win-win, who cares?

I tried this and it sucked i got left with a lot of domain's that i didnt want and couldnt sell. And im in the uk.
My advice would be to avoid it, its a hard sell, especially with professional website building company in the area probably trying this before you.

What is the break down of the $500??

No idea of how much i should charge for their hosting. Not sure if i should get them babyplans at host gator for 4$/month and make 125$ in referal or resell em the very same hosting myself for 15-20$ and make residual income every month.

No professional website building company in the area. Not even "noob" website design/development companies. An area with a million just for myself.

You could offer them the websites for free, as long as they agree to host it with you for at least a year. If you charged them $15 a month, that'd be $180 per customer a year. All recurring income.
