Brochure and Flyer Design

Hey guys, I've got a question I hope you all can help me out with.

As something to do on the side, I've offered to help my father out with his business. Business is good, however, it can always be doing better. We are an OBC, offering virtual / physical offices, in addition to professional office services.

We recently concluded that we wanted to make some brochures or flyers. Something to put around the local Starbucks and etc. for entrepreneurs that can't afford, or aren't aware of, virtual and physical offices and try to hold meetings with clients or partners in a coffee shop.
In short: Pretty focused campaign, relatively small.

In order to make his life easier and be economical, I've been trying to find programs to make our little advertisement. I'm a pretty capable guy on the computer, and have experience with the whole Microsoft Office Suite and various Adobe products, though not much with graphical design.

Given that most amateur (Microsoft Publisher - Though I haven't used the latest version) programs come out looking.. well. Amateur. Does anyone have suggestions for programs? I've borrowed Quark Express from a friend, though this seems like something that would take me a month to learn correctly, and doesn't supply any kind of graphical design. We have plenty of stock photo and design accounts, so that's not a horrible issue. Just need something intuitive that won't cause my brain to go into seizure.

Alternatively - If you guys think this is a poor route to go, feel free to suggest alternatives that you have either used, or as a professional, think would be better suited.

Thanks!

I think it's a good idea, especially if you use sales reps.

They need some materials. Also you can put images on an ipad.
I have not found a person who can design a flyer and understands Marketing principals, anyone had success with flyer design on the forum?

I dint think its worth the hassle for a one off project. I think you're better of outsourcing the design to your requirements on elance.com or vworker.com or one of the other freelance sites.

Ive done the same thing for my business and its very inexpensive.

The best products to design a professional brochure with are Photoshop and Illustrator, then take the design into Indesign and format it properly, which is not something that you will be capable of doing if you do not know your way around the software. And then export the final layout into a PDF, or Indesign file format, to give your local printer, most likely Kinkos.

The hardest part of your project will more than likely be in the graphic design area. No matter what software you have or use, the final will only look as good as the designer themself makes it look.

You may want to look into something like Make a Brochure, Create a Brochure with Templates | StockLayouts®

If you can figure your way around Indesign, you can just purchase a template, change the text, and your done. The template is already set up print ready, with all the guidelines, bleedlines, etc, that the printer will need. Most of the templates have pre-made designs also, that are professsional, leaving you with just adding content.

While you could learn to do it yourself, I'd probably say look around on fiverr to see if you can find someone to do it for you - even if it costs a bit more than $5 which I'd expect.

In regards to the above, I don't spend much time in Starbucks, but how likely are they to tolerate your leaving your flyers around, especially when you want to take their clients away from them?

MS Publisher is good if you change alot but PhotoShop is king. My team does graphics everyday, we have done graphics for videos, websites, 3d Birdie Books for Golf courses, Broschures, flyers, cards, post cards, and the list goes on and on... They use PhotoShop for everything.

With PhotoShop you have layers so you can make different versions in one project and change them just by making them visable or not visable. You can export to any format: PDF, JPG, GIF, PNG, etc. and all this in CMYK or RGB or what ever. It is flexable and most graphic designers use it.

As for doing a print canpagne it is very difficult and I would only suggest it in a small area: Town or in the country. In the big city it will almost certainly have little if no effect. It would be better to use Google Places and other Local online systems to find customers but the best way is referals. Setup a referal system where customers feel good about recommending you and your products and or services to thier friends and business partners. This always works best on a small scale marketing campagne. Be as personal with them as possible and get them to feel like they are refering a friend and not a business. This will work well on the "physical side" the virtual side could be more difficult and probably better done on the internet with one or more video presentations and a sales pages with optin to get something free. The free thing could be consulting, advice, recommendations or an analysis of what they need from a professional "YOU". Explain what the value of this FREE Advice or Consulting is worth put a price on it:

Example- Get FREE professional and personal consulting before you rent or buy your next office. We are the professionals who can save you time and money. Before you make a decision let use help you make a smart decision, in the years to come you will glad you did.

OR- Get FREE personal advice from professionals before renting or buying your next office. We will help you find the office space that suits "YOUR" needs and saves you time and money now and in the future. In the future you will be glad you did.

I have been doing business with large companies internationally (Mostly in Europe and the US) and some local for years so I do have alot of experience.

I am presently working on a project to help people here do international business with thier products and/or services by using partners in different countries who help them with translations, laws/regulations and getting their stuff into new markets.
    Hope this helps.

A brochure is a excellent marketing tool. I would say if you are going to use them make sure that they look professional. I agree with those that have mentioned outsourcing the design to a graphic designer.

When choosing a graphic designer take a look at their Portfolio. If you like their style of design then you will probably like what he/she will design for you. If you don't like what you see when you look at his previous work then more than likely you won't like what he comes up with for you. Hope this helps.

I'll agree with those who've said Illustrator/Indesign. This is the way to go if you wan't professional quality for print materials.

I'll also agree with those who've said if this is a one time project, then it isn't worth it to do it on your own.

While these programs will definitely give you the result you're looking for, they take time and practice to get good with. Realistically speaking, if you don't want your output to look "amateur", then you can't have an "amateur" doing the input.

Now if you plan on doing more projects on your own in the future, then learning skills in these programs will likely be of great benefit to you, in which case I'd say dive right in.

But if this is a one shot deal and you don't plan to do any more print material design in the future, you'll save yourself a lot of time by having it done by someone who already has experience with designing and formatting print ready materials.

And remember, your time has value, so doing it yourself doesn't necessarily cost less!

Really simple to do with Photoshop and we teach people to do this every day. You don't need to be a graphic designer to do this.

    Forget doing it yourself dude..

You will never meet the quality of a good template, take a look at this site for example Print Templates | GraphicRiver you can buy brochures, flyers, etc for a few bucks lol

Think about it, how long will it take you to create a whole design that will most likely never look as good as a template that a professional designed? Now all you need to learn is how to download illustrator for free and about 20 minutes of your life editing that template.

In my Looong career selling advertising programs where I NEEDED.... GOOD... Graphic Design....I've found my "Graphic Designers" by going to small printers and asking them if they know any "Graphic Designers" who "work out of their homes".

Over the years I've found 3 of the best this way. The last one I've used for the past 15 years. She is GREAT!

I've also gone to websites that are selling "advertising" products .... scrolled down to the bottom of their home page and found the designer... contacted her and whala.

One site was a guy looking for sales people to sell Ads on Menus. Another was someone looking for sales people to sell Ads on Prescription Bags.

A phrase I use when talking to these "Designer" people is; "I'm looking for a design person to do some projects for me (here it comes)....ON THE SIDE!"

They know that I'm looking for "Part-Timers"!
