How to become a consultant

I would love to become a ppc consultant for small businesses in my area. My question is, how do I go about it and how do I start? I don't know how much I should charge and how I should go about finding clients... Can you guys help me? Thanks!

First off, how much do you know / how much experience do you have with PPC?

      Chris -

There are a million books and programs out there to help you. Invest some time and money (if nothing else get a library card) and learn from them.

My suggestions would be to run a few local campaigns and get some results, then start sharing those results with local business owners and offer your services for sale.

      Good luck.

Gonna have to agree with Tim here... If you don't have a lot of experience or anything to show, then you're going to have trouble landing offline clients.

Look at getting some results on your own to present before trying to tackle a client.

My expericence is pretty good. I made my first profits online with a site that was solely promoted trough PPC. At its height, the site was making more than 2000$ per week, but since I was capitalizing on a trend, sales slowly started to fizzle out...

I know how split testing works, exact match vs broad match, basically everything you need to know to start a campaign. I mainly work with Adwords, and that's the only platform I intend to advise people on...

Google has a new program training agencies on PPC called Google Engage. Becoming a Google Certified Partner will also help.

If you know a lot about PPC you can set up a seminar for local businesses teaching them the value of PPC and doing a sort of "invisible close" to get them to buy your services. As others have said, networking at local events will also be helpful.

as Fitz10 said, I think a local seminar would be the best way to do it.

You could invest in cold calling/telemarketing or just figure out what ReachLocal.com is doing to acquire new business and follow suit.

But I'm a pretty big believer in the "education" sell, as it just makes selling so much more easier. Once they see your knowledge and expertise, coupled with the fact that "this shyt looks hard; i don't want to learn how to do this" from the business owners seat, it's hard NOT TO sign contracts.

  • I just landed my first PPC gig. Having prior experience at an agency helped. I would recommend reading "The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" Also, experimenting with a few campaigns never hurt anyone!

Search Google for "dentist" "plumber" "Chiro" etc and take note of who already has ads displaying. Give them a call and ask them if they want help...
