Just thought I'd share this because it's worked really well and might work for you guys too.

I started standing up at networking meetings and explaining how SEO can benefit a company. All good, got a few people interested but they were just wanting me to critique their website. Fair enough.

So, we began to run seminars and I structured them like this:

1) Ask for a bunch of companies to tell me what they did
2) Asked for their web addressess
3) Did some live keyword checking to find out some related keywords
4) Found out how many people searched (x)

--The killer--

5) Asked them how much they made on average per job (y)

6) Multiplied (x) by (y) then by 6% (low conversion rate) = How much money they could make if they got of their ass and did some SEO.

It's amazing the effect this has when written on a whiteboard. Got sign-ups to our membership plan and also a bunch of SEO clients there and then - there were only 18 in the room.

I have a spreadsheet I use similar to this.

First column: Google Ranking (#1, 2, 3, etc)
Second Column: Click Through Rate on First Page of Google
    Third Column: # of Visits
Fourth Column: # of Visits X Conversion rate (4%) X AVG Lifetime Value

When I plug in the numbers (I use 4% to be extremely conservative) and show them the outcome, even being in the #10 spot their jaws drop.

What is an average conversion rate?

I usually plug in numbers 4% - 10%, but I know that is still really low.

Yup - use the spreadsheet idea too when sat next to them. I actually thought about knocking up a quick application to do it on the desktop, bit neater that way.

I think the best effect is when you do it in a room with lots of others though, you then get others saying "can you try mine???"

Nothing like peer pressure to get a room buzzing!

Congratulations on your creativity! Easy idea to implement, and it encourages interaction with the audience. I'm looking forward to trying this at my next workshop next week.

        A few ideas:
-as you promote it, ask the participants beforehand to figure out their avg profit per sale and bring it to the workshop. Gets them thinking about the numbers before you do your whiteboard exercise.

-as part of the signup process, ask the attendee what type of business they're in. You can do some research ahead of time and find some numbers to mention like "lifetime value of a customer", etc.

The problem with this is that there is no hard and fast rule when the maps come into play. If there's a 7 box(which there will be for most local searches), your #1 organic listing isn't getting close to 80% CTR. It's still around 20-40% as far as I can tell, but the numbers thrown about for CTR% are generally for non-local searches which throws them out as far as most of us are concerned. Wish that I did know that number.
