I've been doing SEO for corporates for ever. I've never affiliated anything in my life, just the client stuff. That's why I've got a big car and a house in the country.

So when I thought about selling my course on how to do it, I was thinking "I bet loads of people won't want it because this market will be saturated now".

And then I just checked how many people are reading these forums:

Main Internet Marketing Discussion Forum (1462 Viewing)
Warrior Special Offers Forum (2526 Viewing)
Warrior Products & Services (403 Viewing)

Offline Marketing Discussions (130 Viewing)

So it would appear that most people are still chasing **** berry top ten.

Cool. More work for us!

Well that points the obvious, there are always people who are just starting out and need to get their foot in the door with certain keywords, and much like all new people they aim for the impossible keywords. Until later on moving to local clients.

Exactly, I reckon it's an evolving process. My point is, more people go for affiliate stuff first rather than clients which to be honest, is probably the best way.

If you can sell some of the crap you can get on Clickbank these days then you can sell pretty much anything I reckon.

        # of complaints from Affiliates = 0
        # of complaints from Clients = endless

Easier.....yes. However, affiliate work turns me into a hermit so I still prefer to work with clients

Customers will always find something to complain about. Even if you give it to them for free. LOL

AND MORE on that note.... the less you charge, the more they complain. The higher you charge, the less they complain and less needy they are!

As strange as that may sound to some people I have also found this to be the case.

I've heard many people ask things like how can you people justify charging such high prices for custom business websites and Internet marketing?!

It's not about the work of building a website or doing some Internet marketing. It's all about the value of that work to the client.

It seems like people want to turn this into some kind of commodity and, for those who do, they are only setting themselves up for a life of working hard for very little money looking for client after client just to be able to pay the bills and stay alive for another month.

Charge a fair price for your work based on a realistic estimate of the ROI. The people who don't want to pay the price that your work is really worth are the people you don't want to be doing business with. They are the ones who will complain the most and the cheaper you set your prices the more your clients will expect you to do for no extra charge.

Now, if you are doing work that has little value then obviously price it cheap.

It's much like articles. If I buy them for my own Online websites & marketing I can't pay more than $6 for an article. That is all the ROI warrants for me. However, if I was contracting out work for articles for an offline client where one customer could realistically generate an extra $1,000 over the next 10 to 12 months then obviously an article would be worth a whole lot more than $6.

I think this the main point people are missing. It is all based on the value of what you are doing for your client. And that value is not fixed. It varies from client to client and business to business.

One thing I do to increase the value of my work is to show my clients how to leverage, and help them to leverage, what I am doing to maximize their ROI. This is something I see virtually nobody doing online in the IM field. They all just sell their stuff and do nothing to help people to leverage their product / service to get a better ROI which would then increase the value of the product or service they are offering.

I don't know why it's true, but it is more often than not. In my other business on Ebay people will occasionally try to beat me down on price. We're talking about wrangling over a $1 or $2 on shipping. I always refuse to give in to them. The ones who I've sold to at some of the lowest prices are the ones who are completely unreasonable and come totally unglued by the smallest of things.

Sometimes it's fun to tell them the price is good for the next 12 hours and then it's going up. They say you can't raise the price! Sure I can. Why can't I? It's mine, to sell or not sell. The price is X. I'd rather find the next customer than haggle with the person who I know will be a pain in my side. It's just a certain mindset in some folks that you want to avoid if at all possible.

This is true in more than just offline marketing. My wife is a dog trainer and I know on almost every occasion where she has deeply discounted people and offered them a long payment plan just to book them they were a total pain. In some cases we even ended up partially refunding them just so we didn't have to work with them. The people that booked right away and paid full price right away were more often easier to work with.

Just wanted to say after reading peoples replies talking about your free mini-guide I wondered what in heck they were talking about. After taking a closer look at your signature I went ahead and grabbed it.

Very well-written and I can tell you have experience in working with offline clients. Your example communications are very similar to the kind I have with local businesses. Excellent advice you are offering for people who want to get started in this area. After checking out many junk MMO products it is most refreshing to see someone speaking honestly and sharing real information.

This is so bang on. I've got one customer at the moment that signed into a 24 month deal. This is the last week of the contract and I'm sooo glad, they've been nothing but a serious pain in the ass.

          Lessons learned:

If a customer seems like a nutcase - turn them down
Never have a minimum contract length - I just do monthly
Be prepared to sack clients - it's an amazingly refreshing experience!

There's a natural progression to making money on the web.

    1. they hear you can make a ton of money on the web... so they learn SEO, PPC, Affiliate, etc... year 1
    2. then they hear money is in the list... so they go and create squeeze pages, mini-reports, products, etc... year 2
    3. then they hear that having clients paying them $1k/mo retainers for services they learned in year 1 is the way to go... year 3

    4. Then of course... a guru tells them that affiliate marketing is the way to go and your stupid if you don't do affiliate marketing (easy money)... so we're back to year 1
