Online ordering for pizza delivery

Hi

I have an appointment with a prospect who owns 3 pizza parlors. One thing he mentioned was that he wanted to enable people to order online.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Could a regular shopping cart be used, is there an off the shelf product for restaurant takeout sales, or would he have to get a custom program done?

Any help you can give would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Virginia

I actually looked awhile back and came to the conclusion that you are going to need software/website designed for this purpose if you want it done right.

You can game it by using an online shopping cart and having an email sent with new sales to an email account that the employees constantly monitor.

But I am pretty sure places like Pizza Hut have the orders come in, goes to their computers, and puts the order in the que automatically which is the way to go.

Doing it the other way requires people to constantly look for the orders which introduces more possible errors.

There are services that serve the restaurant business with this type of product.

    They provide the backend processing.

Here are two sources, I know nothing about them, however, this is a project that is on my backburner as well, so I will be doing more research.

You might find that their credit card handling service has a way to process online orders, all you need to do is hook it up to a order/processing form by talking to their processor support; obviously not the only way to do it. But, I would think that if you can get the processed orders in front of a cashier it could flow through easily enough. The high tech thing would be to hook this into their already existing data flow. However, getting a $300 dollar laptop or even a small net device and have it receive orders in an email would do the trick, you just have to have a way for the cashiers to take the order in by hand.

That is going off the point I have no idea what they are using presently. Like I said, if they have a modern credit card handling system all you have to do is find out if they have a web api to use in a cart.

I know that dominos is using something similar to flex builder for their orders. This hooks into databases and api's fairly easily and if you get a VA who knows FLEX you could have them design it for you.

Creating a cart system and forms off a web site would be the same hourly as other solutions you offer, but creating a application like the one pizza hut or Dominoes uses would be at minumum three to five times what you normally charge.

Find out what payment processing they use and go interview them
Detail a plan and put it on oDesk and get feedback about FLEX or similar systems (It's very much the same as Flash just more database and programming oriented)
Show them a concept of taking regular form/cart orders and then show application based ordering (high and low - features and benefits)
Quote at least three times what you think it would take you to do it.

By the way, all you would have to do is make this into a flowchart to explain it to everyone (VA and the client).

suggest just place a tel number in your website or allow online chat

If i make a pizza order, I want a live human confirm me they received the order and going to make it. I personally dont like autoreply - I would think "is it real?"

      Hi, all

Thanks a lot for the info. Some great points to consider.

I have found a few online services that either sell software or provide
      an online ordering platform.

I though about suggesting something like Odesk, but my concern with that
is that once the software is created the programmer moves on to other things. If something goes wrong, or if there is a problem, it may be difficult or expensive to get the same person to make the changes. You also run the risk that the code may be written in a haphazard or convoluted manner, which would make it difficult for a new programmer to figure it out.

I don't have any experience in having software created, so maybe someone can tell me if these are valid concerns or not.

      Thanks for the suggestions

Hi, One benefit of ordering online is that many restaurants and catering companies will give special discounts and other benefits to those who make use of their websites. Such benefits are rarely available to the phone-based customer.

I would try and find out what Pizza Hut does....
    They incorporate SMS as well.
I can place an order online and save it.
Then, I can type a keyword to a certain shortcode.
Bam, I just placed an order. Pizza delivered within an hour.

I would pay a programmer to look at their source code thoroughly
I just looked at some of their code, and they use QuikOrder.
You can visit the site here: Restaurant Online Ordering: Fast & Convenient Ordering Subs, Desserts & Pizza Online Ordering System
I would also call and talk to them personally. Maybe the tech dept and not the sale dept.
