I just installed WP Mobile Detector and checked it here iPhone 3G/4G tester - online website test emulator with flip and it still looks the same.

  It looks like the site doesn't work. And they want me to download Safari for the simulator to work?
  
  I wouldnt trust that simulator to work at all.

  I use this one: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch/ It also has a pro version but I didn't look into it yet.

Most of the plugins like WPtouch will convert your wordpress site to mobile.

WP Mobile Detector is really for redirecting your website to a pre configured mobile website and does not create one for you.

The problem with most of the plugins is that they do not give you a separate site but clone your current wordpress site which means if your site has any complications they will not work very well. So if you use tables or any other formating they look pretty horrible.

We make our mobile sites and completely customize for the customer and then use a redirection plugin or service to take people to the mobile site.

So this is what a mobile site looks like using WP Touch great for blogs.

This is what a customized mobile website looks like. Better for businesses

Here is one of our clients that looked terrible in any of the wordpress plugins but looks great on as a customized mobile site.

I have used this plugin on a few sites:
WordPress › MobilePress « WordPress Plugins

Customizing the built in templates will make them look a lot better, but work ok out of the box.
