Catching a ride on a pizza box

After thinking of how to drive traffic to web video commercials for local businesses, I started thinking of targeting pizza shops.

Then it hit me.

I'm sure a decent (or even struggling) pizza shop will send out hundreds of pizzas in their boxes each week. How about attaching a small flyer (maybe 1/4 page of an 8.5x11 sheet to keep the cost down) which mentions a "free appetizer" or something like that.

This "free appetizer" flyer would include a website (landing page) that customers would go to, enter their name and email address, and be sent a coupon. It would then sign them of for a "Deal of the Week" campaign offering other coupons once they subscribe.

That would be an easy way for a pizza shop to start building a list that they can market to.

With hundreds or more boxes being sent out every week, I'm sure the list would grow quickly.

To sweeten the idea, there are a lot of pizza shops in my area that also have full restaurants. So this could turn a "take out" customer into a "dine in" customer as well depending on the coupons offered.

Now, if you think that's a good idea, how could we as offline marketers capitalize on it?

If the pizza shop wanted to give it a try, how would you charge for it? A certain amount per new lead? A standard monthly maintenance fee?

I'm just throwing it out there to see what you all think.

Would you share some ideas with us too? We will really appreciate and maybe can get someone started in his own offline journey.

Great Post. Heard of another person on a different forum, who adverstised free pizza on oneside of a business card, and designed the other side of the business card for realtors, insurance agents, etc. So when they are passing out their card, they're giving free pizza away on the other side of the card - via the punch hole formula.

Pizza boxes are a great way to offer CPA offers as well.

You can say "John's Pizza gets Free iPads" and send them to that CPA offer

    Hey Mike,

I love the idea myself and there are both a few posts and WSOs here about doing something similar. Those have focused mostly on promoting a CPA offer and splitting the proceeds with the business, but I think using flyers on pizza boxes or handed out to customers can be a great way to get them on an email or I think even better today, an SMS list for future marketing efforts.

I need to talk to my local shop because they don't do anything to get you onto a list of any kind (par for the course for most businesses) and either email or sms could be a great business builder for them.

    Cheers and thanks for posting!

I think the pizza box is basically an untapped marketing resource in most towns.

Ironically, I just met this afternoon with a pizza shop owner, and I'll be setting him up with an SMS system and helping him build his mobile list to market to. So every pizza box that goes out from now on will have a small flyer on top enticing people to join his special offer and coupon "club" by texting the word: pizza to his local number.

I had set up the system before I met with him and had him demo it on his phone as we sat there talking. He was amazed at how it worked and loved the whole concept. He wants to get rid of the Val Pak and other advertising he is doing.

Oh, and come to find out....his cousins and brother in-law own other really well-known pizza restaurants and bars in my town. The referrals could be a gold mine.

Long story short, get out there and contact business owners about what you can do for them. I hate cold calling so I put together a direct mail letter to send out. He called me the day he got it. Cold calling works, but having a business owner call you is the best "positioning" in my opinion.

Congrats on your deal. That sounds great and gives me even more inspiration to go visit our local pizza shops.

I do have a question for you and others.

Have you heard of www.YourAreaCode.com? It looks like they do some sort of SMS service texting coupons for local businesses but when I tried to sign up, I kept getting errors and gave up. One of the restarurants I'm going to visit use them and I was curious what the cost was so I can go in prepaired.

Yes, I've heard of them. If the place you are going to see already uses a service, just ask them how its going and get some feedback maybe before you pitch them. If you try to go in and compete against them right off the bat, chances are you will just compete on price alone.

If you can go in as a marketing solution and help them get results, I think that's the key. My pizza guy uses Val Pak and he said he got 60 redeemed coupons last month from a mailing to 37,000 homes. Not sure what it cost him, but that is a pretty dismal response rate. (like .00162%)

Imagine having an SMS list of 37,000 and sending out a exclusive and timely offer/coupon to them. Even a 1% response rate would be 370 redemptions.

So the plan will be to just destroy the advertising methods he currently uses and drastically reduce his ad cost. Then let the referrals begin.

    Mike,

Your post is what I call "thinking out of the box" marketing. It is amazing all the different ways of promoting offline businesses if one just stops and thinks. I know my mind gets to spinning so many times I can not stay focused on task.

    Great post.

I want to thank eveyrone for their input and ideas. I know I appreciate it and I'm sure others do too.

I now want to take the pizza box idea one step further with two words...

      Table Tents

You know. Those small advertising signs or "tents" they have on the tables in restaurants showing either desserts, or beers, or advertising. So how about this as an dea.

You create a table tent out of the same flyer you put on the pizza box. However, on the table tent you also include a QR code that takes the customer to a mobile squeeze page or landing page that get's the customer's name and email and signs them up for the "deal of the week".

I know there's plenty of times I'm bored sitting at the table (especially when waiting for someone). If I saw a QR code on a table tent, I'd scan it just out of curiosity alone. Plus it would tell me that this restaurant knows the latest technology and marketing trends.

      Soooooo.....

My question is. Can you have a regular website squeeze page for the pizza box flyer AND a mobile squeeze page for the table tent that puts the customer's name and email in the same list? So whether they enter it via the mobile squeeze page or the regular squeeze page, they would be on the same list that the restaraunt can market to?

And speaking of lists. What would be the best solution to use for managing the list? Should it be Aweber, ChimpMail, Constant Contact, or if you own your own copy....GWA Autoresponder? And with Aweber or Chimpmail or Constant Contact, can you set yourself up as the owner and have lists for a bunch of different restaurants under the same account?

I'd think you'd want a text service not only an email service, because if you used a QR code, you could have their cell number.

Yes, entering name and email in a form on their cell phone might be a pain for many. Just have them text a word to a number and they will be on the list. Give a great offer in the autoresponse and they will look forward to the next message the business owner sends out.
