Creating websites for offline business-How do you do it?

I was going to try today, going into some places to see if they had thought about having a website created-But then I realized, I don't really know what i am doing.

Can you offer me some help please!

Creating websites for offline businesses is very much like creating websites for online businesses. The same kind of HTML and CSS coding you do for your online websites will work for websites you build for offline businesses.

One of simplest and most effective approaches is to do the following:
      1. Get a hosting account (I use Hostgator but there are several other good ones)
      2. Use Fantastico Deluxe for an "automated" Wordpress installation
      3. Buy the domain name (Godaddy is good & decent prices)
      4. Point the Godaddy domain to your Hostgator nameservers
      5. Use a basic Wordpress template (know as "themes") to set up your site

Of course within each of these basic steps you may need some clarification, but Godaddy and Hostgator offer great tech support via phone. There are also several good tutorials on Hostgator - or just search for your problem in Wordpress.

That's what I would do. Wordpress is very flexible with great access to Themes andPLugins - and most important, the search engines love it and index/rank it quite fast (assuming you use decent SEO practices).

      Good luck,

      BGG

Great advice. Though without a portfollio, I'm guessing it would be difficult to get started. (Businesses want to see what they are getting and how it will benefit them).

Why not get some experience before you sell your services? There are many worthy non-profit organizations that could use your help. By your own admission you aren't qualified to do sites professionally, so get some experience by helping others as you build a portfolio, not just going out and low-balling your competition.

People who know what they're doing get paid well. It's only the first week of the month, and I have got two client sites, one for $2750 and the other for $4400. That sort of thing should be your goal.

I have created a site and done article marketing, made some afilliate sales. I just don't know whether that's 'enough' experience. If not, what else will I need to do, need to learn, need to know?

You don't need to wait till you have the experience, take action and outsource the design to a company already doing it then during this time you can be getting the experience you need or you can be a broker. Simply get the client, charge them what you want to, pay the company and keep the rest for yourself without having to do the work.

    Thanks for your time.

So I can do the same using templates?

Also, is it just a case of cold calling? I mean, I don't have a wealth of IM knowledge to convince people why the opportunity for a website should not be missed.

Depends on your clientele. There will be those that will be happy with some template hundreds of other sites use. But some businesses will want something a little more unique to them.

You need to develop a value proposition. You need to be able to explain how a website will benefit them and why you should be the one to build the website for them.

Also, if you decide to use WordPress, make sure you are experienced using it and know how to secure it, because if it gets hacked, that hurts your client as well as yourself, and you'll need to get it fixed pronto, as well as guard against future attacks.

You don't have to cold call.

You could network at conventions/conferences and hand out your business card which should have your phone number, email, and website on it.

You can also do local marketing - place your site/business on google maps and such. Then when local potential clients search for YOUR BUSINESS at YOUR LOCATION/ZIP, then your info will pop up and they can visit your page

There are so many uses for a website both online and offline.

I suggest you do a lot more reading up of past topics on the forum.

    Use the search facility.

You won't get very far with so little knowledge.

Just having a website is not a magic pill. It would be a dis-service to suggest to people that it is.

For one thing, promotion of it is a key point.

The only thing you are missing is the confidence to speak well of your own skills.

And the only way you will gain confidence is by doing.

Build a second website, then a third, and a fourth. And try to monetize each.

Once you have found your inner strength, talking to local businesses will be a walk in the park.

I had a lot of fun playing on words with this post...things like inter-changing "some places" with a fat-farm & "a website created" with liposuction...
"some places" with a Jenny Craigs & "a website created" with double fudge chocolate cake...
"some places" with a hospital & "a website created" with open heart surgury.......lol it's endless......sorry, couldn't help myself...
