Biz with no website - domain available. How bout this?

Ran into a Handyman with no site and his name would be available as a domain. Sent him a postcard and he called. Will maybe doing a site and more (I hope).
What about this in the future - lets say you found Joe's Pizza - no site and domain available. Would anybody try and buy the domain - build the site (a simple one) and show it to them? Other than a domain for $10 it would just be time involved. If they didn't want it you could take down the site and just let the domain expire.
Might be a good way to make some fast money with a simple site - can't imagine anybody would turn down a pre-made - $199 site!
I know you could do this on your subdomain but them seeing it on www.joespizza would be a big seller I would think.

I don't see a problem with that other than taking the risk of order the domain and them not using it.

I've made money by developing sites on my own domain using a subdomain. It's pretty effective when they see a new site that's 10x better than their current site.

BTW, I think $199 is too low. Start high, settle for lower if they balk.

    Here's a little guidance...

    You: pre-made site for $499 / $399.

    Them: OK!

    - Or -

    You: pre-made site for $499 / $399.

    Them: No

You: Ok... Would you be willing to do $399 / $299 with a year of free hosting (or something like that).

This is based on Robert Cialdini's influence book. There was a guy who owned a pool (the game) shop. He said his average sale was $500. His salesman would start with the lowest cost pool tables and go up. He then told his salesman to start with the most expensive pool table first and show the cheapest last. The result was his average sale was $1000.

Do the same... start high and settle for lower if needed.

Good tactic. If you start high you can always go down. Start low you can never go up!

Good info! As far as price I was just throwing a number out there for a basic site - gotta ad Google places - seo etc. Not sure what a place like Joes pizza would spend - or other mom and pop places. guess you never know till you ask though!

Well the company can demand the domain from you since it is their trademark.

Domain names and trademarks is wide open to interpretation. I suspect in April of 2011 there are few, if any businesses with trademarked business names who do not have a website.

And $499 is way too low. Get at least a grand.

Just because a trademark isn't registered doesn't mean they couldn't get it!

Here is the main problem with your plan....the website already exists, you already did the work. They either buy it or they don't. You can offer it for $100... but since you already did it, they can offer $20 for it since what else can you do with it?

Pitch the places, get them a website, google places, and set them up with an autoresponder or SMS marketing and you will have much more value and much more success!

    No, I wouldn't do it.

It seems to me the only reason to do that is your belief it might sell easier, right?

I have seen no evidence that would happen, personally. If they are not in the market for a site and you happen to have one, name or not, it's not likely to make a difference....Unless, you pretty much give it away. Like $199 or something.

The time spent registering a domain, building a site etc, imo, would be better spent looking for an already interested customer.

What have you got to lose besides a bit of time? If you have not been doing offline marketing and are a bit unsure of yourself, why not go for it?

I agree that you should charge more for your work, I agree that your time would be better spent prospecting for new clients, etc.......BUT, if your idea gets you off the dime and gets you a few clients and a reference book, go for it.

In the War Room, private area, Mike G is giving away his business plan that is very much like this and shows a lot of potential. If you are not a member, become one. It pays for itself the first day.

Do it, get paid, move on and make more money.

K - here is my thoughts - I own a brick and mortar biz cleaning carpets (hence the name "rugman"). Never had a website. Branched off into tile and grout cleaning. Put up a website on my own - grout911 dot com. The only purpose was to have a place for potential customers to visit. take a look - not a very pretty site. Got it to the top of Google places.
NOW - all the website designers guys (and gals) would rip this site to shreds - I mean really - it does pretty much suck. Brings me in a bunch of biz! Customers call and say "I saw you on the web and my bathroom looks just like that!" Would I have paid $199 for that site when I started out? Yep! Can I build a better looking site now - yep. Do I love helping small service biz out - YEP!
Do I know that eventually a huge job will come along - yep!
Is it easier building a site for $199 - $299 than picking up a 200lb oriental rug and carrying up a flite of stairs - YEP (that answer can from my back BTW).
