This added 3 new clients and $4k per month to my offline income stream in a few days!

I was majorly into consulting local business late last year. Recently, this has become a back drop to my slew of businesses, but I still have consulting clients and am open to new easy clients. All of my new clients acquired come 100% from referrals. I literally have not done a single second of marketing for consulting in months.

I tried something a little different for my referral method the other day with an old client and it turned into 3 new clients and $4,000 more income every month for the next 12 months.

I've always offered referral commissions for my clients. 50% of the signing fee and first month payment (ends up being roughly $500-2000 per referral for the existing client).

Anyways, I suggested that instead of straight cash for the referral that I would offer free services instead. For this client's case, he had already hired me to do the full package. Every new client he referred, I would cut down his monthly bill.

By the end of the week, I had 3 referrals from this client. All three bought right away due to the original clients awesome reference.

So the moral of the story is that not everyone wants cash. Even though the free services were exactly the same value as the cash...he apparently saw more value in the services being free of charge.

Maybe he liked the lower advertising costs that show on his books...Maybe since he had the choice now, he felt the free services were worth way more than the cash...maybe something else...but he definitely moved quicker when I offered the service exchange.

I am doing this with my online affiliates as well. For my top affiliates, I offer bonuses...in the past, they have been cash prizes...now it's all about offering free toys, cash, trips, etc. They choose instead of being forced to accept the one gift.

People like to have the say in things...even gifts.

Try it out. It worked out great for me.

    This is so true! I have alot of clients that want to either trade service, like one I just signed up that is giving me free food from there Cafe and vacation trips to there beautiful Monterey California Bed and Breakfasts. These trips would cost me about $1,000-$2,000 and I will get them for free every month. Its nice because it forces me to take time off ;-) Heck i can even give away trips as gifts or promotions to other clients.

    I have other clients that are referring clients so they can either get a discount or free service as well. Great idea and thanks for sharing.

        I think it is important to remember that not everyone is stimulated by the same offer. Some prefer money and others are happy with services or whatever else can be arranged.
        A quid pro quo arrangement is great.
        I have a webmaster who works on my website for me.
        He charges me nothing and I do anything that is related to writing for him for free in return.
        We work as a team and help each other and the return is much better because neither of us has to spend any money to get what we want.

    You are so correct in what you say. Not everyone wants cash. I did a half cash, half comp w/a local restaurant last week for text message advertising. The comps let me take potential clients to this beautiful restaurant as well as give away a few of the comps to friends. You never know where the next referral will originate.

    Some people want cash...some will take discounts or gifts...but everyone wants to feel their effort was acknowledged for helping another person out.

    PS - This is a big reason why volunteers will often not volunteer again (even if it was for a good cause)...they just didn't feel appreciated for donating their time/body to help out.

    Yes I have noticed the same, sometimes they just want to barter stuff with us which works for both people. Great idea for sure! Cash sometimes isnt always king!
